**Personal Learning Plan** Ryan Mansouri Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Lambton College of Applied Arts and Technology BSNL-1914: Clinical 1 - Professional Communication Professor Sherry Robinson October 6, 2024 ### **PART A** **Step 1: Self-Reflection** **Self-Reflection:\ **Throughout this clinical placement, I encountered various experiences that significantly impacted my learning and professional development. One standout experience was administering immunizations to a six-year-old boy during a busy clinic day. This particular interaction required me to harness effective communication skills to alleviate the anxiety of both the child and his mother. My role involved not just the technical aspects of the procedure but also educating them on the importance of vaccinations, addressing concerns, and ensuring a supportive atmosphere. I found this situation particularly challenging as it required me to balance the emotional needs of the family while maintaining clinical efficiency. Reflecting on this experience, I realized the profound importance of creating a comfortable environment for young patients and their families. For instance, during the immunization process, I made an effort to engage the child in conversation, using playful language and encouraging him to express his feelings. This approach not only helped to ease the child\'s fears but also created a positive experience for the mother, who was visibly anxious. As a result, I learned that establishing rapport before any procedure is crucial, especially in pediatric care. **Areas of Strength:** 1. 2. 3. **Learning Needs:** 1. 2. 3. ### **PART B: Learning Plan** **Goal 1:\ Goal:\ **I will improve my communication and rapport-building skills with pediatric patients by practicing early engagement strategies during clinical placements, ensuring I make children feel comfortable before starting any procedures by December 1, 2024.\ *(SMART goal: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound)* **Date Created:\ **October 6, 2024 **Which CNO principles of the code of conduct does this goal relate to?** - - **Which CNO practice standard does this goal relate to?** - **Time Frames to Achieve My Goal:** - - **Evidence-Informed Activities and Time Frame to Achieve My Goal:** 1. - - - - 2. - - - - 3. - - - 4. - - - **Evaluation Measures - How will I know that I have met my goal?** - - - - ### **References** Kaufman, J., Tuckerman, J., Bonner, C., Durrheim, D.
