Perhaps, you have already resolved for yourself as to what career goal you are intending to aim. If not, career pathways would be of help for you to realize your career decisions based on your capabilities or skill. However, if you are not well-aware of any of your potentials and abilities, you may resort to your career guidance counselor or perhaps try asking your peers or family to, at least, give you a hint of your intrinsic capabilities to realize your own potentials and career path. Yet, what is this career path all about? 2 There are many definitions of career. Yet, all of them do only speak of one important fact and that is, a series of jobs or career geared towards helping you to progress to reach your desired goals. It is interesting that you may take this opportunity to see things through of what you are capable of. Yet, one precondition is that you should, by now, be aware of what you can offer based on your capabilities and skills. Furthermore, the phrase “series of jobs or career” implies the various efforts or stages that you need to undergo to hit your ultimate goal in life. To note, there is no short cut to reach your desired goal or career. Even setting a timetable would not necessitate that you will be on top in a given period. Thus, hard work is always an imperative for one to climb the ladder leading to success. Types of Career Path With the many opportunities around, one needs to be aware of what you desire the most. Typically, the types that shall be discussed onwards are tips where you can align your potentials or realized abilities and skills according to the industry or organization that you would want to immerse with. A career path calls everyone to undergo a tedious process to progress in a given field. If your aiming is to be in realm of education and wanted to be a principal, it is necessary that you will work on your credentials and know the basics of teaching. That is why, you should start as a teacher and be well- versed with the administrative functions to prepare yourself for a big-time break. What are, then, the types of career path? Indicated herein are only some out of the many career paths that you can opt given the many disciplines or career options that you can choose from. 1. Knowledge-Oriented Careers This type refers to knowledge-based careers such as education, medicine, law, management, finance and the like. Knowledge-oriented careers also include those that contribute to other business areas like in problem-solving and in software creation. In which case, architects, computer engineers, data scientists, marketing professionals, etc. are included in this type. 2. Skill-Oriented Careers This type is more on the physical skill like welding, plumbing, mechanic and other technical-vocational strands. Included also in this type of career are those in the hands-on and service-oriented work like sportsmen, chefs, gardeners, artists, performers, etc. 3. Business-Oriented Careers 3 This type of career is something that values customers may it be in the sphere of trading or selling products and services. To be in this field does not necessarily mean that you are always at the forefront of selling. This means either you are the boss or the sales representative. 4. Independent Careers Independent careers refer mainly to freelancers who are selling a service or a skill. One precondition to be in this type is the basic set of skills or knowledge that will be of value to others while getting paid as a freelance. This only means that as long as you are not employed or what we call as self-employed and is not bound to any organization or enterprise, your category is this type. These are the four (4) types of careers. Based on your desired career, what category are you in? If you haven’t decided yet, the question would be how to choose a career path? Choosing a Career Path Choosing a career path is the crucial part. This involves self-assessment to align yourself to what you think is palatable to you. At times, it is not just what you desire. It is sometimes where do your capabilities or skills fall in. Perhaps this topic would help you think and dig deeper to start plotting your pathways. How do we choose a career path? 1. Passion This mainly brings us to the question “what are you passionate about?” This seeks to identify the zeal within you. What do you imagine doing that you can give yourself fully to that career? 2. Skills and Abilities The very basic question under this title is focused on your skill set. Are you that person who enjoys deciphering complex problems? Do you enjoy writing riddles or metaphorical statements to add beauty to your craft? Do you marvel at the beauty of numbers? While all careers necessitate both technical and soft skills, this will help you determine what are those in your skills or abilities that need further development. 3. Personality You may not be aware of this but personality is another item that should be given consideration when choosing a career. What do you think is your personality? Are you a leader or a strategic thinker? Identifying one’s 4 personality may be tricky at times. It would be helpful for you to take personality tests to help you affirm who you are at work. 4. Education Learning never stops! To develop your skill, you should be open to new possibilities and opportunities. One way to expand your horizon is through learning. You will not just only enjoy the advantage of some epistemic prowess but also enhancing your skill. 5. Financial Range This is another item to consider. At times, we need to refer to our spending capacity in order to lay better plans for our desired career. However, there are scholarship grants that you can avail as long as the minimum requirements are met. Furthermore, you might want also to consider the salary range of the career that you desire. 6. Networks Building a network is also important for you to understand the odds or the edge of your desired career. You may start with those people who are familiar to you like your family, friends and other acquaintances. This will help you see a better angle of your career path through the valuable insights that they can share. 7. Mentoring Some people don’t find this item valuable. As a newbie in exploring career pathways, mentoring would be of great help for you to be helped out in your confusions and doubts. Insights that can be gained out of mentoring can help you understand more what you desire. Mentoring also helps in realizing the essentials and non-essentials of your desired goal. Understanding Self-Development Plan The problem sometimes of having a knowledge with concepts is that most people think that they already know how to facilitate their plans to achieve their goals. Most of the time, this leads to wasting time and effort for some essentials are overlooked. That is why, planning is deemed necessary to vivify and resolve some aspects that could become heavy hindrances to your desired aim. Think of some people who failed to achieve their goals. Perhaps, this is all because of poor planning. Yet, this planning involves not only the external factors to be considered. It is also important to plan intrinsically to know some 5 aspects that needs to be developed, if not to gradually eradicate. Thus, this section will dwell on understanding self-development plan as a way to achieve a successful career. What is this all about? A personal development plan accounts one’s self-reflection to better understand one’s capacity and capabilities while considering the factors in choosing a career. This brings a detailed action plan to fulfill what one desires be it personal, academic or career-based. In our case, we will focus ourselves with the career-based goals. Moreover, this strategic move allows the person to clarify and establish aims, recognize the strengths and weaknesses, and the roadblocks or potential obstacles that need resolutions. Aside from these, personal development plan includes the outlines of one’s goal/s – the desired career -, its importance and how to achieve it. This implies that this will, in general, lay down the short and long-term plan to reach the desired career. Consideration in Personal Development Planning Have you ever tried doing this? If yes, what are those factors that you have considered while making your personal development plan? To point some of these considerations, take the following factors that you may start making your own planning: 1. Clarity of Vision The main question in this item is “where do you want to be?” It may be easy to answer the question by mentioning right away your career goal. Yet, how far are you from achieving it? With it, it is useful to make use of time that makes sense to you by asking, “Where will I be five (5) years or seven (7) years from now in terms of career?” One important thing in this item is to be detailed. The more detailed you will become, the more grip you will hold on to your desired goal. 2. Outlining Strengths and Areas for Improvement This item seeks to ask the question, “What are your strengths and weaknesses?” In which case, you need to outline your strengths and the things that need further development. Such strategy will help you be aligned to achieve you vision. This is also a way of ensuring that your skill is geared towards your goal. Think about what you are doing now in your studies. Does it resonate to the vision that you are building in reality? If not, better have some self-examination. 6 3. Building Your Personal Development Plan With the necessary improvement that you have indicated, plan out the specific actions that you are going to make to strengthen your skill. In this item, you will be able to see the magnitude of your task and the time needed for you to improve yourself. Indicate also in your plan the actions that you need to take in order for your strengths to be sustained if not bring it to another level. It is like when you are thinking of going abroad, improving your language skill should appear in your to-do list. Furthermore, doing an action plan will open horizons for new discovery in searching for strategies to effectively and efficiently respond to the need of improving your skills or capabilities. 4. Identifying Priority You can’t change anything all at once! This is the fact that you need to accept no matter how in a hurry you are to improve yourself. This only means that you need to prioritize the items in your to-do list. Given that you have already a list for areas to improve, a plausible suggestion that you can use to set your priority is to scale them from one (1) to ten (10) or depending on how you want it to be scaled and ask yourself the following questions: How important is this? How important is this to be developed now? 5. Review Once your plan is set and has been prioritized, take time to review your self- development plan within intervals like after a month or two. This is a way to be reminded of your vision and progress. Planning may never be that easy but it gives you the prize of reaching your career goals with ease. To note, however, that sometimes changes will exist that may affect your plan. The most important thing is to learn how to adapt and make a few tweaks of what you have made. Are you ready now to craft your self-development plan? 7 Let Us Practice Self-Development Planning. Make your own development plan following the format indicated below.
