PADERES Subject Teacher PRINCIPLES OF SPEECH WRITING The principles of speech writing serve as fundamental guidelines and strategies to craft effective and impactful speeches. THE SPEECH WRITING PROCESS Writing an effective speech followa certain steps or processes. The process or writing is not chronological or linear; rather, it is recursive. THE SPEECH WRITING PROCESS 1. Conducting an audience analysis Means looking into the profile of your target audience You need to do this so that your speech will fit or match your audience. 2. Determining the Purpose Finding out whether you want to inform, entertain or persuade Your purpose can be general or specific but it is better if you will be specific General purpose: to inform Specific purpose to inform the students about the benefits of waste management Topic: Waste Management Specific purpose Benefits of Waste Management 3. Selecting the topic and narrowing it TOPIC focal point of the speech If you are free to decide on a topic, choose one that really interests you. Narrowing down a topic means making your main idea more specific and focused 4. Data gathering The part where you collect information from sources about your topic You can research in books or surf the internet. Be sure to cite your sources. 5. Selecting a writing pattern Writing patterns are structures that will help you organize the ideas related to your topic. Writing patterns Biographical- Presents descriptions of your life or of a person, famous or not Categorical/ Topical - Presents related categories supporting the topi Causal- Presents cause effect relationships Writing patterns Chronological- Presents the idea in time order Comparison/Contrast- Presents comparison/ contrast of two or three points Problem-solution- Presents an identified problem, its causes, and recommended solutions 6. Making an outline OUTLINE – a hierarchical list of ideas can help you arrange your thoughts to make easy for you to write your speech in an organized way Example of an Outline: I. Problems on Wastes A. Environment B. Health II. Ways to Resolve A. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle B. Solid Waste Management 7. Creating the body of the speech Involves in writing explanations, examples and details about the topic you have chosen. Be sure to focus on the main idea. 8. Preparing the introduction Must catch the attention of your audience and present the subject or topic of your speech 9. Preparing the conclusion The conclusion restates the main point of your speech. You can summarize, emphasize your point, and call for action. Your goal is to leave a memorable mark to your audience. 10. Editing and Revising Means correcting your speech for mechanics such as grammar, punctuation, spelling, organization and the like. When you edit, be sure to : Edit for focus – check if it focuses on the main topic Edit for clarity- make sure your words are clear and easy to understand. Edit for concision- keep it simple and easy When you edit, be sure to : Edit for continuity – ideas should flow smoothly Edit for variety- shift in tone and style Edit for impact and beauty- make it memorable 11. Rehearsing Gives you an opportunity to identify what works and what does not work for you and for your target audience “Constant practice makes perfect”
