People who live near lakes can practice good stewardship of the lake by not using lawn fertilizers. **stewardship:** **\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*** **[What are the two main types of resources?]** Any natural material that is used by people is a natural resource. Water, trees, minerals, air, and oil are just a few examples of Earth\'s resources. Resources can be divided into renewable and nonrenewable resources. 1. **Renewable Resources:** A natural resource that can be replaced as quickly as the resource is used is a renewable resource. Water, trees, and fish are examples of renewable resources. Renewable resources can become nonrenewable resources if they are used too quickly. For example, trees in a forest can become nonrenewable if they are cut down faster than new trees can grow to replace them. 2. **Nonrenewable Resources:** A natural resource that is used much faster than it can be replaced is a nonrenewable resource. Coal is an example of a nonrenewable resource. It takes millions of years for coal to form. Once coal is used up, it is no longer available. Minerals, oil, and natural gas are other examples of nonrenewable resources. **\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*** ![](media/image2.jpeg)**Identify Label each picture as a renewable resource or nonrenewable resource.** **\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*** **Compare: How is a renewable resource different from a nonrenewable resource?** **\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*** **Identify: As you read, underline the possible effects of resource use by people.** **What can happen when we use resources?** Natural resources can make people\'s lives easier. Natural resources allow us to heat and cool buildings, produce and use electricity, transport people and goods, and make products. While natural resources are helpful, the way they are used can cause harm. Mining and oil spills can damage ecosystems. Oil spills can also harm local fishing or tourism industries. Burning coal or other fossil fuels can cause air and water pollution. Used products can fill landfills or litter beaches and other natural areas. Overuse of resources can make them hard to find. When resources are hard to find, they become more expensive. \*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\* - **List: What are three ways that natural resources are making life easier for this family?** - **Explain: How can the extraction of natural resources damage the environment?** - **Describe: How can human use of natural resources pollute the environment?** \*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\* **What are some effective ways to manage resources?** As human populations continue to grow, we will need more and more resources in order to survive. People can make sure that resources continue to be available by practicing stewardship and conservation. Stewardship is the careful and responsible management of resources Conservation is the protection and wise use of natural resources. **Conserving Renewable Resources** Stewardship of renewable resources involves a variety of conservation practices. Limits on fishing or logging can increase fish populations and protect forest ecosystems. Fish can be restocked in lakes and rivers. Logged areas can be replanted with trees. Water conservation can reduce the amount of water used in an area, so that rain can renew the water supply. Reducing the use of chemicals and energy resources can reduce the amount of pollution in air and water, and on land. \*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\* - **Identify: Describe the ways that each activity in the picture shows stewardship of natural resources.** - **Putting limits on the number of fish that a person keeps can help to protect fish populations.** \*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\* **Reducing the Use of Nonrenewable Resources:** Nonrenewable resources last longer if they are used efficiently. For example, compact fluorescent light bulbs, or CFLs, use much less energy to produce the same amount of light as incandescent light bulbs do. By using less electrical energy, fewer resources like coal are needed to produce electricity. Reducing, reusing, and recycling also reduce the amount of natural resources that must be obtained from Earth. Although recycling materials requires energy, it takes much less energy to recycle an aluminum can than it does to make a new one! \*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\* - **You can reuse a plastic water bottle Instead of buying bottled water. Reusing Conserves water and oil.** - **Compact/ fluorescent bulbs last longer than incandescent bulbs and use a lot less energy.** - **Cans, wires, and other objects made of metal can be collected and recycled into new objects.** \*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\* **Apply: How can you reduce the use of nonrenewable resources? Developing new technologies that use fewer resources is expensive. Changing how people use resources can be difficult, because some people have a hard time breaking old habit. Recycling resources can sometimes be expensive and inconvenient. Managing resources also has many advantages. Management can reduce the loss of a valuable resource. It can also reduce waste. Less waste means less space is needed for landfills. Many resources produce pollution as they are gathered or used, so resource management can lead to less pollution. \*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\* **Place a (-) next to each property of the hybrid electric car that is a disadvantage. On the global level, countries make agreements to help manage international resources. For example, countries agreed to stop using chemicals called CFCs after scientists discovered that CFCs were causing damage to the ozone layer. The ozone layer is a resource that protects Earth from harmful radiation. Eliminating the use of CFCs has slowed the breakdown of the ozone layer. **A) Change Laws:** On the national level, countries pass laws to manage resources. Many nations have laws that determine where, when, and how many trees can be harvested for timber. Laws also govern how materials must be disposed of to prevent and reduce harm to land and water. Governments spend money to promote recycling programs. In addition, government funding allows scientists to develop technologies for using resources more efficiently. **B) Change Habits:** Think about all the things you do every day. Changing some of your habits can help to conserve resources. You can conserve water by taking shorter showers and turning off the faucet while brushing your teeth. You can use reusable lunch containers and water bottles. You can recycle disposable materials, such as plastic bottles or newspaper, instead of throwing them away. You can bike or walk instead of riding in a car. You can save energy by turning off lights or TV sets when they are not being used. Families can buy energy-efficient appliances to save even more energy. \*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\* - **List: What are some of the ways these students are conserving resources in their school lunchroom?** - **You can conserve resources in your school lunchroom.** \*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\* - **What is a negative impact of resource use?** - **List two ways that resources can be managed effectively.** - **What is one advantage of developing energy-efficient technologies?** - **Apply: What would a scientist need to consider when developing biofuels from plants like sugar cane and corn to use instead of fossil fuels?** \*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\* - **Managing resources can allow resources to be conserved.** - **Managing resources has advantages and disadvantages.** - **Humans use natural resources to carry out daily activities.** \*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*
