We are scared of the same media we want to partake in Different ways to look and Think ab media **[LIVING INFORMATION ]** After the political debate the biggest news was Taylor swifts post/ even if trump said that ppl in Ohio eat dogs. After the political debates the things that sent viral were MEMES Media are Media are ambiant : ambiance. ***[LIFE IN A DAY PROVIDES A SNAPSHOT OF PPL ON THE PLANET]*** Eight insights that govern everything we do in media - *[**Media are pervasive and ubiquitous** **:**]* (they are everywhere) e artefacts the screens the projectors we can't switch them off ex : webseries skibbyditoilet ILEGAL IN AUSTRALIA BASED ON ONE OF HIS NIGHTMARES (kid from Georgia). 12 billions watches+ UBIQUITIOUS a kid with a software made it and we all come across references to it. (anyboy can make it, and everybody has heard it) ITS AN ENVIRONEMENT (a universe you can't switch off) - ** *[Media have long complex stories : ]***It's the same technology Nothing we do in media is new. AI isn't new HE SHINNY NEW TOY. Authenticity and creativity. Ex : A teacher Socrates the invention of writing. A student says he is excited to learn the guitar thru a book Socrates says that its the illusion not real. Is it real only when you do it yourself ? 2000 years of discussion. ITS ALWAYS THERE AND WILL ALWAYS REMAIN THERE. - ***[Media raises ethical issues :]*** are they destroying or makin it a better place ? We get to talk ab something. Ex : YouTuber. : Avocado started mukbang videos. The incredible pressures of being a YouTuber wit the changing algorithm. The ethics ab caring ab ppl who are in MEDIA. The impact of media on people's mental Health. - ***[Media are a source of pleasure and fun :]*** We usually forget that in all critical theories that we are here bc medias are fun. Games : SONGS : VIDEOS. That's how powerful they are even if we dont need them. We dont need media : not utilitarian goods. Its not necessary for survival. WE CARE so much ab smthing we dont need. Playstation 5 game : it was made during 6 Years 70 Miliondollars. What was the fun part of making the game ? The ppl who do media love what they are doing. - ***[Ppl are comfortable with media :]*** We dont question what it does to us anymore. No matter how critical we are. EX : a girl is interviewed by a YouTuber and the appears in rolling stone magazine. Another girl was also in the Interview and has a podcast and a following. - ***[Ppl are confident with media :]*** good at using media/ We are actually bad : complex to operate. Most of us dont know how it works = GEN Z CANT TYPE. The teacher will speak to his wife who is in Australia while walking his dog in Amsterdam. How does that work ? Underwatercables, software in les than a second. We take it for granted= it takes power over our life. We looks media with wonder. - ***[We accept surveillance :]*** Don't look at it with judgement, but with wonder. Unconsciously we act differently on the internet, the pitch deck leaked online of CMG. They can listen to everything we do and speak. THEY ARE ALWAYS LISTENING. In Media too we are active participants in the surveillance. We actively monitor ourselves. Do we have a choice ? We still get to participate in this ambient. Thurman show ; what would happen if Thurman knew and wanted to stay ?? - ***[Ppl work for media :]*** Life in a day : ppl work for free. Everything we do in media helps somebody earn money. We make our own world in Media. You can't help but be a part of it. We produce each other constantly. The Eire sensation that we are kind of comfortable it feels ambivalent (AI) Ex ; Australia banned phones for ppl under 14. The weird feeling that its super fun its the same a being scared. Ppl are not ok with surveillance, but still partake in it. Black Myth WUKONG - misogynistic creators. It allows us to loook at smithing else in the media+ social background -descentering media= we tend to be obsessed with the media (study it constantly) W E should look to the side of media and ask ourselves what is behind it ? What's the story ? \- Gaming industry : publicly coming to terms with it UBI - Deepfake porn crisis in Korean schools ; gender relations in different societies. Women not even considering the fight bc we are all equal / while some men stil believe that women are not equal. - We make worlds in media+ we create versions of ourselves in media. EJ : las Niñas del Saint George. 1. EVERYTHING IS MEDIATED - Is a statement by Sonia : essay in 2009. It means that there isn't a point were the human isn't connected to media. How we eat / fall in love/ breakup. Everything we do to some extent is shaped by media. Things we picked up from programs/ things we saw in TV. Ppl are more in touch with the family they like thanks to media. - Everything we do is mediated/ appreciate it 2.MEDIA ARE DIFFICULT AND COMPLEX \- Nothing is new. Ancient debates. Media reminds us of the discussions wevehad since we started to speak. We probably will never figure them out. 3\. MÉDIA INVOLVE ETHICAL AND PROFOUND DILEMMAS \- Discussion about values/ ethics/ social ideals/ passion, joy = hurtful to someone else ? \- Our entire society is being reorgaised by AI we dont know what to do/ nobody does. Everything is mediated - What's behind media - Why are we bothering ourselves and ask if anything is real ? - Writing= technology of the pen. - Start questioning all the discussions with media ***MEDIQ AS ACTIVITIES/ ARTIFACTS/*** Strictly look at them as artifacts Artifactual history of remote controler / joystick/ computer mousse/phone/ video recorder/ interface.\ The moment we start to think that smithing is not a big deal we become blind to it and how it operates... something is powerfully when you dont see it. Remote control : -1st space commander= marketed towards men children = misogynistic marketing -There's no off switch button The evolution : MATCHPOINT TECHNOLOGY : any physical object can change how a screen responds to you. These devices are al built with a certain type of user in mind. Things are created bc ppl dont use technology how they are supposed to. It's an adaptation - Burnout : A sketch in with elevators are voice controlled/ the Scottish accent is not recognized by the voice recognition... Not made for everyone. The voice recorder - They were bigger than tvs - Bulky difficult to use/ needed lots of technical expertise - Panasonic commercial : its easier to use than the voice recorder .\ Sony fake commercial : « they will release another one when you figure this one out » THE JOYSTICK -***Almost all media technologies were invented for the military (solve problems in the field) communication*** \- solve a way of communicating Communicate that uses a lot of lines simultaneously. Most countries had they're own internet (not very useful) . It evolved to smithing we could use at home= gaming/ Nintendo with the game not connected to the box/ Wii ***-THE JOYSTICK IS STILL EVERYWHERE/ WE JUST DONT SEE IT*** \- CES Las Vegas : clothing that transmits what you want to do with your body to the game ( turns the body into the joystick). THE COMPUTER MOUSE - Go to YouTube and search for demonstrations of when technologies were new : the only time we were actually aware of media. - *You dont use technology in all the ways they can be used.* *THE MOBILE PHONE :* *-a global device the theory is that Motorola invented it* *Japan and the Netherlands were the first where you could use the phone.* *-in the 90 s ppl didn't associate all the things we can do now online with the phone. It was with the computer.* *-phone was only based on text (WAP).* *They were never supposed to make phone calls * *How did the phone evolve from solving problems to smithing that is a pat of out daily lives.* *° The wives of the men from the factory figured out how to use the phone nd they started calling each other.* - *The devices we use nowadays dont serve the same purpose they were supposed to* *They invest in it because of what's s coming next = we have to train the consumer to expect what it wants next.* *We don't have to look qt the gadgets of media as what they are, but think for what are you being trained. What is the next gadget ?* *The iPhone took many existing devices and just put them together.* *The phone just keeps getting bigger = the bigger a screen gets the less we can focus on what we are seeing . The bigger a media gets the less we are able to literally see it....* *-* *The technology of a singular device is now all around@* *Present= d'Issa ppearing so that we dont even realize its there* *THE INTERFACE* - *Dealing with computers and telling them what to do* - *So easy to use that you dont even have to think ab it* - *The interfaces are intuitives* - *You can costumize it= makes it more personal* *Why did YouTube become so liked ? Bc ppl didn't get the play botton. And in YouTube you could just click on it.* *It's not addictive bc its innovative , but bc we dont have to think ab what we are doing.* *MEDIA DISSAPEAR : media wants to not remind us of its presence* *THE THEROY OF REMEDIATION : All that medias do is to tells that they are still there , while trying to dissapear. * *Ex : biochips/ lentes de contato with a chip/ epidermal electronics/ electronic tattoos/ neuralink : you only have to use your brain to use your computers. His is the trajectoriy of media.* *« Nothing was your own expect the few cubic centimeters inside your scull » orwel* *« You never had a camera in my head » Truman* *« Brain reading tech is coming the law is not ready to protect us » VOX* *The dark side of media artifacts* *Their impact on the world = greening the media* *We have to study the medias environmental impact= some of the most unregulated parts of the world CHILEEEEEE CTMMMMM= cobre chileno* *When media are born* *In china they are putting the pieces together the company is fox con* *When media dies= nothing good , not properly recycled at the same places where the crystals are being taken from. The electronics aste dump sites they are building a space rocket. Ans it actually works. We should e more aware.* *Media artifacts are dissqpeqring/ stay mindful lab them beyond the content* *They never really go away. When we throw them out is it bc the old one doesn't works ? No its bc its not adapted o the new environnement . Our technologies stay alive even in the landfill.* *5 hrs a day with ppl using media when they were called '4,8 hrs but when they were told to write it jumped to 9,5 hrs a day when they followed them around it went up to 11 hrs a day. A study in 2003* *Médias have disappeared even if they are everywhere ;* *CLASS 4* *Media and how they fit into our lives* *We use media to remix our realities : concept of a mashup/ remix.* *The language of our time is not linear anymore, Non linearly and a way that is original to our remix.* *What happens when media come in between with what media really is and what we think media is. Now we are living in a digital environnement. Where our language is non linear.* - *Multitasking doesn't exist (our média use isn't deliberate)* *We are expose to multiple medias in our environnement* *Most our mediq today are lean forward media, it's physically changing what we do ; and the actions that we do with it* *What we do makes a difference : why we love it.* *How we organize our media tools : makes it more personal/ création participation that makes a conversation wth what we see on the internet* - *The more we participate : the more we lean forward the more we loose ourselves : who we are physically : organic and the digital persona we created. There's all these versions of ourselves alive. Ex : selfie= is the ultimate expression of who we are and we become completely fake= its performative. Three percent of the taken selfies are actually shared. We got selfies from Rembrandt= portraits. The more we do that the more we become unaware of everything in media* *Book= NETWORKED Lee Rainée= theory of network individualism. Our perpetual connectedness gives us endless opportunities to be part of the give and take of networking.* *Now we are all connected thru Networked individualism : very different things can be now connected thru our media life. We gave a semipermanent life line on pur pockets. The social arrangements are connected through media.* *Ex : protests using avatar costumes= for the ppl to pay attention. « These are the real Navi »* - *Arab spring = média as social arrangements our world in terms of democracy+ politics* *-they can involve anyone or anywhere in the planet.* *Ukraine : mediq professionals outsource their media.* *The war was going on 10 years before Russia invaded= HYBRID WARFARE (propganganda/ fake news/ taking out media infrastructures) a military concept of media as à social arrangement+ Being war* *EVERYTHING IN LIFE CANNOT BE SEPARATED FROM THE ROLE MEDIA PLAYS WITH IT.* *Class 5* *Virtual concerts : game changer* *MÉDIA definition : Media artifacts/ activities/ arrangements (conclusions) Media dissapear/ media are what ppl do/ we live in media ; we through media make worlds* *Open source : anybody can edit it. Wikipedia* *Two boys documenting their while living in Gaza : open a new world from what we see on the news.* *[Virtual reality experience] : dance performance= you become part of the performance « le bal de Paris ». A lot of ppl come together to create. Unconventional way o create something.* *A lot of new technologies are preparing us for the new technologies.* *03. Public life : LIVING INFORMATION* *Our lives have become public ; not all, but for some to see. (Big brother is watching you) .* *We co-create things in media : surveillance* *[« It used to take effort t be public. Today, it takes effort to be private » ]* **[PANOPTIC]** : A few are monitoring many. ALL SEEING. (Big brother) **[SYNOPTIC]** : Many of us are monitoring a few. (Social Media) **[OMNOPTIC]** : Everybody is watching everybody else. SURVEILLANCE BY : Assume that ppl are being watched at all times : You don't misbehave. [Surveillance is our assumption/ feeling that we are being watched. ] - Coffe shop in Edinburgh got messy by students : they didn't install cameras but massive pictures of eyes in the backrooms that got messy. It didn't get messy. Surveillance is powerfully bc we think it is and bc we participate accordingly ! [Foucault :] What makes his work so powerful is the fact that we all do smthing and struggling it's it. Everything that happens to us doesn't just happen to us, we are all fighting against it. He celebrates the resisting, the struggle. Surveillance is very misogynistic and racist : - Face ID doesn't work well in black ppl, its not trained to revognize ppl of colour. Through looking at the surveillance we see racism that surround us. It becomes real. - Fake cameras hanging : Has the same effects as real cameras its just cheaper. - 16 august : SURVEILLANCE DAY Most store/ banks have cameras SURVEILLANCE WORKS BC WE ASSUME WE ARE BEING WATCHED Healthcare system : one of the most powerful= files. Starts when you are a baby. The info is sold to the corporations : Vinci : the largest corporation of data. We are not being watched by human beings (the data is to much) its being collected by machines= DATAVEILLANCE. We study how we are participating in a surveillance system in public life ; Why Netflix keeps canceling show after just 2 seasons= Even the most perfect surveillance system almost never have the effect the want to produce= never ever perfect. 27 September 2024 The majority of ppl feel like this surveillance is going too far= Surveillance capitalism ; All our economy has shifted to make money out of our information Living our life online does smthing to us and we do smthing to it. Surveillance in Institutions : The institution of work The stipulation in the contract : Emails may be monitered from time to time. Example Australia mails firing bc they posted a meme in 2006 Edufactory mouvement : Paying less attention to ppl and they want to let us go sooner, they see us as à mass(group). They can track whether we enter or leave our office or. The library ; tracking us with the student card. The assumption that surveillance is working perfectly (never does) is what makes us behave. School given laptops : easier to track. Sharenting : an example of home surveillance / Posting on facebook= its not mine anymore it becomes META. Surveillance : ALL OF US : American presidential election everybody was filming each other. Went to see Barack Obama in a pep rally= everybody was taking pictures of each other= performing for media ; Big brother vs little brother Lulu : an app where you can rate men after the date. And give opinions. Our own personal surveillance ; What are we wearing ? We post it ; Machines are the ones that are tracking our info/ computers serves / software programming . They put a typo on your file. They can label you as suspicious. In the NH the surveillance system is very present ; How it works : how it makes us feel ; The prize we pay living in a digital environment *[Why live in public ? ]* Why is this thing I care about a thing now ? This phenomenon why is it happening in the first place ? So what ; why would anybody give a dam ? Bc you care ! Living In public is not a first choice, Otherwise you can't participate in Society. - [Big data and social physics]- the more precise data we have = the better we are at providing the services that are important to ppl. The more we know the better we are at dealing with problems ; - [Surveillance has rewards]- Flying / subscribing to retain things= Being followed : costumer loyalty. They give you rewards / save you money. - [Social bonding and grooming]- Mutual monitoring online= is th same as what monkeys do in their environnent. - [Seeing and being seen-] Fundamental necessity : the worst charge after death penalty is to isolate them. The solution to make most ppl feel good is if ppl get checked up on. Being acknowledged/ Social isolation. The surveillance we do to each other is seeing each other. - [Attention is addictive]- Produces dopamine in your brain. You are constantly being bombarded y dopamine/ Ex tying shoelaces. Dopamine is fantastic. Medias have real physical effects on us. They are never neutral ; « In our culture the professional largely white middle class is taken as a social norm -bland an neutral mainstream- from which every other group or clas is ultimately a kind of deviation » -Barbara Ehrenreich Something needs to be done with the data for it to be useful. We put ppl into boxes : it doesn't make us evil or wrong, we just do it. 02-10 ***[What is still real ? ]*** What does real feel like ? For each generation is dif, simply bc the mediation of media is dif. The concept of media : In between us Ex : Socrates standing outside the walls of Athens the student is excited to learn the guitar thanks to the invention of books : Socrates tells him is you learn smthing from a book you think you know smthing/ but you just get the illusion that you are learning= now with MEDIA. (The semblance of knowledge). Media messes with our brains/ culture/ sense of who we are Our media both makes us more real=selfie/ and more unreal= performative versions of ourselves. It's not bc of the internet or social media. Ex : When you go to a meeting you wear your best suits. Uncanny valley : smthing that is too close too reality, but isn't (too good to be true). « We accept the reality of the world in which we are presented » Exemple :Allégorie de la caverne -Platon Thé fundamental principal of media literacy= conspiracy theories Is your online version the real version of you ? We dont tell the full truth= we are always lying a little bit = Would your AI clone be who you rally are ? Fundamental perspectives on how to deal its how media War against media « our opinion is that war the death shoul be instantly proclaimed against them. Every machine of every sort should be destroyed. » Never study the fun things of media ; Surrender to media : Media affects research / the effects of what ppl think ab and what reaction comes its that. WHAT WE THINK AB and how we act. How media creates worlds= worlding of media. « Why may we to say ; that al Automata have an anrtidial life ? FOR WHAT is he heart, but a spring ? And the nerves, but so many string ?« -Thomas Hobbes 1615 Give ppl the illusion of choice Become the media Human machine hybrids : They wanted to kill the humans BUT nowadays they're representation has become more human, the love It's much less likeky in contemporary media to find a human machina that wants to kill us. Since the 1970 the notion that media has a direct effect pon ppl is erased. Now they have developed a really complex model. Our academic fields have erased that mentality ; bc thee wasn't enough evidence. CIRCUIT OF CULTURE= we've been nurturing the idea that our relationship with media is just complicated : FRUstrating : uncanny Friday 4th OCTOBER War against media : Surrender to media : Germany= ppl believe it was great to be at war with ppl that didn't look like you or think like you : PROPAGANDA= The assumptions that programs in media would program us. Propaganda actually had no effect : didn't change their fundamental beliefs ; It has effects its just not that simple. Media are a given=It will always play a role. Life an d media are inseparable. Become the media : The assumption that the lines we like to draw between technology and humanity are not that neat ; Maybe we can't be a human without technology. There isn't a forest that wasn't planted by human beings. We can't treat nature as smithing separate from us+ technology= use technology to fight climate change get it to rain/ predict a hurricane. Origin myth : Nua/ Adam and Eve= They created humans out of nature. Separate these things started in the 70s century/now it has changed . « Divine machines or natural automaton » -Gottfried Leibniz (1714). We are different from media, but we are all divine machines= we all have à soul/ organic/ real/ natural. Everything the cosmos is made out of the same= We are insperable/ Everythig is made out of Mona's ; Monatology. Simulacra et simulation-Jean Beaudillard= Argued the way media are evolving+ ppl are using= will lead to a world where we can't look at something and be neutral. Any reference to the real will get lost. Ex= Teacher went to LA and recognized the city with scenes from movies ; The city is real, but not so real Ex : Matrix « What is real ? » « Welcome to the desert of the real » Thers a real world but thing grows there anymore= dead. No other relic is left of the Discipline of Geography -Jorge Luis Borges = ask a person the weather outside= they will check there phone instead of looking up ; We use media to move physically= MAPS. To some extete nothing we do is natural to us= All is programmed by media= we have already become media. The problem with. The matrix is that they assumed the real world is there ; it isn't EVERYTHING IS ALWAYS INEVITABLY MEDIATED. Her= Man falls in love with an operating system. The feelings that everyone has in the film are real= he does fall in love with the machine ; We should start from the perpective that its all a bit of a mess. Internet assistance Références to reality are impossible= EVERYTHING IS MEDIATED ; Média and love ESPA= girl group that were introduced with their avatars. DEEP FAKE TECHNOLOGY= we can't tell a difference anymore. The Sandman= The man falls in love with an automaton (a robot) but he dosent know= he falls in love with her bc she's quiet. He has t come to terms he fell in love with a machine : he goes to an insane asylum= he gets out years later. He reconnects with his first love they watch from the bell tower and he realizes she's a robot. Sigmund Freud= the experience of the uncannyness= What happens when what you think is real isn't Real anymore. Theories about media ***Love Life : Living information*** Erotics : The intense feeling we get from mediq : The body responds to media . Our physical engagement with media. How many times are ppl actually talking ab bodies ? Our most vulnerable and what media does at that moment. What happens to media when no one is looking ? A major hurricane passes thru the states Oct 2024 : images of ppl in distress= Fake images The ppl that said the images were fake : Fighting Against the machines (first perspective) The second perspective= th ppl that posted the pictures said I dont care if its fake/ its still accurate (surrender) Third perspective : ppl started posting memes. Why study the Media -Roger Siverstpne « The erotic escape. Shame and reason conspire to repress it. The body disappears behind the curtain of the mind. » Fandom studies connect us to the erotics of media : a community loving The Eliza effect : in the 60s a computer based program that works as a therapist : Ppl really felt seen they wanted to meet Eliza in person ; Very powerful embodied emotions : Also called the media equation : At some oint the boundaries between UuS and media dissapers. Emotional engagement with media. Modern family : Brigitte the fridge makes Mitchell jealous : you se what I mean ab him. 3 perspectives *[Media as practice :]* How are ppl using media in this context : The way ppl use medias creates worlds. Media use is never neutral. How do ppl find love using media ? *[Mediation :]* How does love and everything associated with ove feature with media : Love is fundamental to the human connection. Romantic novels : Most read. *[Médiatization]* : A fancy concept to remind us how influential media really is. CASE STUDY : How ppl use media to find love ? Ex : Facebook when it first appeared ; The moment social media became a thing the initial assumption was that its use was to get ppl to meet and have romantic relationships. Take the media that u use and use them seriously : You cat send messages simoiusly. Half of the media start a relationship thanks to media/ the other half ends becaus of media. Media is not neutral !!! The first computerized matching : One of the first actions made with media In the last two or three years there are studies that say that online dating might be used less and less. BUT when we use media to make connection we are using love. Fewer ppl are using dating apps. Beyond your own feelings of onlin dating we need tp study why oued you turn to media for dating ? It doesn't have anything to do with finding love, But actually to fhave contro over your love life : We hate being vulnerable. Originally the premise of using computers for love a lot of researchers say it changed the construction/organization of cities : It makes for ppl meeting ppl they wouldn't usually meet. That change the social organization o the city. Ppl from dif cities/ economic backgrounds etc...PPl would meet across political lines. This action became counteracted and medias started creating more specific dating apps : Only for farmers etc : Find like minded ppl. These dating services are being sold : Match : It's easy and its real Tinder : It's like real life/ but better. Selling themselves as being easier and realer. Could a match with someone thru media be more ream than meeting somebody physically : Line at supermarket/ school etc... They say not to use it bc ppl lie : Male height distribution : describe themselves as slightly taller ;Women do the same. The pictures are on average a year older : It will b different but not crazy différent. Medicine to predict your chances of dinfinding ove can be calculates : You are not being randomly matched : you are assigned a score : the mâtches that you get fit with that score. The point is not for you to fall in love : the point is to keep you paying. It's a rigged system : Dating apps were at some point *being* used in the Russian Ukrainian war and the Ukrainian women would tell the goernement ab he location of the Russian soldiers. Our generation is not having enough sex spending more time scrolling thr social media. Bc of our media we are more usual to get into casual sex. We are described as generation porn : This changes our relationship with sex. The impact of online pornography consumption on youth : Pornography does have an effect on ppl : makes all sexual ideas more permissible bc we have seen them. The heavy use f pornography : Their level of sexual aggression arises. There potential beneficial outcome/ Everybody researches for why its wrong instead of the benefits. We need both perspectives. *« Instead of seeing dangers... can also be celebrated as playful rituals of freedom and excess »* NOTHING IS NEW/ The first sexual device was pattented in 1973 ; Whn you are having sex with a device that is connected with your partner are you having sex with a partner or the device ? The ppl who own the sex robots : The discussions tween the ppl that own te robots are very nuanced. The speak very delicately ab them. It's real to them The problem : Women's bodies are being used as props : reduces the complexity/ messiness of human relationships. AI companions : the general assumption Is that we will stop typing/ using google we will have a personal assistant who will have conversations with. *Mediatization :* Films that depict our relationship with media in a romantic way. 11 October It brings media not the most intimate spaces : Our most intimate spaces can't be understood without media. MEDIATION : Historically the most popular media on the planet is love :1) romantic novels/2) romcoms/3) soap operas. Theses genres all of them relate to positive history on love ; but nobody takes them seriously. *What about our love for media ?* *1968 ; Barbarella* *1973 ; Sleeper / Machine : clean/ Humans : messy* *1993 ; Démolition man* *In film technology is depicted as a perfect thing/invention ; But in reality technologie are far from that. There's something ideological about that. You are not being matched randomly. Thechnologies are just as lazy as we are. I can only be as random if we program it that way.* *2013 ; Her* *It's inevitably imperfect.* *Medias havent become permissive : Pple nowadays want to see more platonic friendships ; a film where ppl dont fall in ve ; and just stay friends.* *MEDIATIZATION :* *You can't understand how war/ political situation without appreciation the impact media has.* *First perspective : The media as a sense of institutions* *Second persprective : Taking the issues and how deep that goes* *Why and what is it ab media that people feel so strongly ab them ?* *Self expression if the first fundamental reason : An archive of who you are + partners+ friends* *Speaks to who we are what is our community.* *Feelings media gives you : Expression/ belonging/ Intimacy.* *How can you use love for its transformative potential.* *What ppl feel ab media is profound and close to how ppl would feel if they were in love.* ***[CHANGE LIFE]*** People use media to change something ; Media activism Think of what you care ab or what you study to use it as something that can change the world. We do experience murder thru watching tv= The feelings they create in us are god. You can get in touch with a more real version of you through media. MEDIA : plays and amplifies our senses. What we need for media to make a change is : -For ppl to be litirate : Litirate percentages are rising. Only now to the extent that you can get ppl from all around the world to participate. -Avatar : used to advocate for social cause : As a way of protesting. -The Arab spring -Kony 2012 The use of media in the refugee crisis= used to locate and communicate with family friends+ reach for help. It's a lifeline -Black live matter mouvement -Me too Not just smithing that as an impact it's smithing that's an inevitable part of the world we live in. Ppl are perfectly capable of doin thing on our own : they dont need help on sending food ; they need help getting their story out there. Everybody that has a phone is a potential story teller ; Way of using media that is deliberately intended to change the world= MEDIA ACTIVISM How media play a FUNDAMENTAL rol. Historically the role that media plays= How are the big corporations and or business dealing with this : In general there is a concern of political empathy : Young ppl are really doubtful if democracy actually works. At the same time young ppl have never been more politically involved : Tru protests : Anti gouvernement protests. It's just no tru traditional means. The media makes people participate. Anti established governments. -Arab Spring : primary fueled by ppl sharing on facebook. (Men and women were protesting together) :Show that the use of media is democratized. -Spain : The indignados mouvements : INDIGNADOS : rising unemployments/housing. Monitoring were police would how up and redirect the demonstrations. -UK : Protest against the Olympic Games/ The US has a button to switch pff the internet nation wide. The uk started one too ; -Kony 2012 : Virtual revolution. We know that the workforce in media is generally quite young and progressively thinking ; engaged in politics. But its also the least diverse economic sector. No ppl of color/ No women in high roles. Democratizing potential that new media bring. Rather than directly assisting ppl they give them a voice. Media works both ways : when ppl use media to change smthing it has potential. Ppl voice their own expression to get other ppl to voice theirs= Does posting a TikTok ab your experience living with war diminish this point or help it. A way for ppl to communicate what is going on. EX ; the Anne Frank Diaries. TikTok by teenagers is what report us what is going one in : Their day to day basis=You switch to being a cosumer to being a witness. 90 AND EARLY 2000's Protests largely created thru mobile phones : to get organized. EX : Brussels : 1996 : Protesting with white : A white march is a performative one : get medias attention. The American pamphlet : « common sense » was distributed in several specific place= Some ppl got the news/ some wher illiterate. Women started making their own media : newspapers : accounts to get other women interested Need to g-be heard ; yelling at protests : gets the media coverage to be « women are obnoxious » as it was written by men at that time : Other women would see the media coverage and would Join the protests. By using particular media you also create a dépendance o these media : if you use a platform you need to know that platforms dont want to be viewed as political. They are just there to sell your data. Anything you post on them isn't your anymore ; the algorithm !!!!!! The rules in media policy are constantly changing : What you can and can't post. They aren't transparent : the platforms themselves dont even know how they work. « The system just doesn't like transactions » « Nobody touches the algorithm » The ppl that depend on media when they start to participate on campaigns : Use the commercial appeal o make the brans that whant to be with them to get politically involved with them : Ask them to engage. Ex : Ukrainian band The singer posted a video signing a arching song after they got back and and enrolled in the ilitary. Pink Floyd got back together and remixed his song =NO MEDIA ARE ORIGINAL/ THEY ALL REFER TO EACH OTHER. How does all of this play out in company firms ? -Up until 20 years ago we didn't know. Up until 2005 Media studies didn't exist. Media system : Who owns what ? What is the MEDIA SYSTEM : There is no such thing a national media system ; There is no Dutch média system. The money doesn't go from/ to the Netherlands. What we may think : Massive building with massive names : News corps/Disney. (There are 5 to 6 companies that own most media). The companies that pay for media sectors are not media related companies. MEDIA UNIVERSE : Apple/ Alphabet/ META/ Amazon/ NVIDIA/Microsoft. There is an econnomic sector. The ppl who are in creative roles in the media industries are payed the worst : Musicians. Nobody makes money with content. Going on tour just costs you money. The ppl who tell the stories are the ones who earn the less money. You should be mindful in how you enter the industry : Creative are the less likely to be treated well. If you are that passionate it becomes dangerous. The story tellers are paid the least you make money distributing content :not making it. Media institutions : What goes on inside of them ? MEDIA production : What is posted ? Media professionals : Who are the ppl that work in media ? ***Last class *** The technology industry came in between us and media. The companies that used to be confident since the mid 1990s have been hemorrhaging money. Nobody makes money coming up with content : They hire ; They make money out of buying and selling assets/Hardly paying creatives/ Nobody pays for one object/ The advertisement budget hardly pays the bills. The companies dont earn money= Content plays a minor role in media. The consequences MEDIA INSTITUTIONS : Media industry has a an hourglass figure : However you look at the media : Journalism advertisement/ marketing/ Music/ digital games/ Creators ; The hourglass sujests : Big companies : Departments spread around te world/ Hardly mid side companies/ Many and many of small companies(make media en employ a handful of ppl) The big companies : Buying and selling smaller companies The company that one day might be independent/ Gets acquired by a bigger company and then 2 years later its being sold again. The global advertisement companies : Big : PUBLICIS/ WPP Small : DONER/ fingerprints Global game industries : Big : EA/ UBISOFT Small : WIDE LOAD/ FLYING ROBOTS Music industries : Big : SONY MUSIC/ UNIVERSAL Small : XL RECORDINGS/ ROUGH TRADE Networking :0 Letting go of professionals : Has lots to do with the war in Ukraine. Bc Ukraine has a massive game industry : Shortage of content making : There is a crisis. You do what you have to do to do what you want : Crossubsidising. Appreciate that most of the ppl you will see are not getting payed well NETFLIX ORIFIGINALS : It's the same everywhere just nationalized. If you are in Holland and ppl want to see high school kids falling in love ; You will see Dutch kids/ If you are In London you will see British kids. Shows are getting cancelled : The algorithm become the main predictors : The look at how may ppl look at the show/ How many ppl watch the first 10 minutes/ How many ppl look at it till the end. [NOBODY CARES AB YOUR CREATIVITY : FREEDOM IN THAT] : they dont really care anyway. Shows are values high bc they earn a revenue Most tv shows are written of before they get to our screen : Bc of taxes. NMBERS ARE PERFORMATIVE ! NIDCL : New international division of cultural labor. While all production is global all work is local. All work is tied to a specific place. The procès of how quickly processes move/ How quickly things are sold. Producing media : making content/ Telling stories. We are all managing content : EVERYTHING HAS BECOME CONTENT. What is happening with content ; Whatever the content is it can become global : Taking content that was produced somewhere and making it local. Your content is part of a global market= It competes too. ***Content à-la carte***= (Nowadays is the most used) For smaller/more directed audiences. Content is made for a specific market. Fpr every dollar spent on making content you have to take a dollar to promote it ; Every professional YouTuber works with brand deals. Sometimes they are honest with it and sometimes they are not. Journalism makes a lot of money out of brand deals. Most content is for free. Nobody expects to get money out of that content. The technology we publish our content on would maybe make the content change for it to be more viewed. Your content competes with the content that is for free. If content changed all the time nobody would watch it= The media thrives because it is a constant remix ; everything is a very subtle copy of things that have been done before. *The decisions may seen random, but they actually follow patterns :* - **[Editorial logic :]** Primary way in which decisions are made is by ignoring the world and doing things that just feel good. We dont care ; We like this ; this is what we are going to do. - **[Market logic :]** Every media content has a department that would tell you that the data shows that that's nt where the market is. How decisions are made purely based on what the market is doing. - **[Data logic :]** Everything we do with our content is archived and analyzed. There is incredibly precise data that determines how creative decisions are made. Creating different versions of the same content. - **[Convergence logic :]** News organizations asking ppl to help out . Telling ppl to participate in the creative things. Doing it in collaboration with the audience. You will feel freeer if you follow the logic patterns. *MEDIA PROFESIONALS : The lates you find on google tell yo that it's usually young people/ with a group/ technology based /informal ; Working in the media is so attractive : dynamic/ inoformal.* *But there are downsides : The same informality and intensity can lead to bullying/ abuse : The lack of professionalism : Most ppl leave after 3 years ; Thus type of work comes at a cost. Something radical is cha, going. **MAKING MEDIA COURSE***
