Buffalo Fatherhood Initiative Father involvement in Infant and Maternal Health Presented by: Antoine Johnson, Program Manager My Journey to fatherhood Buffalo Fatherhood Initiative • Inaugural year began in late 2017 • Research shows that 18.4 Million Children, 1 in 4, without a biological, step, or adoptive father at home • 4x greater risk of poverty, behavioral problems, • 7x more likely to experience teen pregnancy, • 2x greater risk of infant mortality DAD TAKE YOUR CHILD TO SCHOOL DAY DADS DO HAIR TOO Social-Emotional Development Domains • AUTONOMY - A child's ability or willingness to self-initiate or respond without guidance (i.e., moving to independence). • COMPLIANCE - A child's ability or willingness to conform to the direction of others and follow rules. • ADAPTIVE FUNCTIONING - A child's success or ability to cope with physiological needs (e.g., sleeping, eating, elimination, safety). • SELF-REGULATION - A child's ability or willingness to calm or settle down or adjust to physiological or environmental conditions or stimulation. • AFFECT - A child's ability or willingness to demonstrate his or her own feelings and empathy for others. • INTERACTION - A child's ability or willingness to respond or to initiate social responses to parents, other adults, and peers. • SOCIAL-COMMUNICATION - A child's ability or willingness to interact with others by responding to or initiating verbal or nonverbal signals to indicate interests or needs, feelings, and affective or internal states. Buffalo Initiative Fatherhood What happens when fathers are present and involved? Racial Disparities in Maternal Health “Compared to other racial and ethnic groups, Black women are three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications.” Black maternal health disparities can be attributed to factors such as structural racism, implicit bias, differences in healthcare quality, and undetected and underlying chronic conditions. Father Involvement & Reducing Health Disparities • Studies show that when fathers are involved during pregnancy, mothers are 1.5X more likely to receive prenatal care in the first trimester • Mother are less likely to experience maternal depression • Well-baby visit improve, immunization, and prenatal appointments • Male involvement leads to higher likelihood of maternal access to health service, more preparedness around birth complications, and better maternal nutrition • Father support of breastfeeding improves breastfeeding outcomes. Including fathers in the breastfeeding process and ensuring their active participation increase breastfeeding rates • Research shows that Skin-to-skin contact for dads include bonding with their baby, feeling more confident as a father, and feeling a surge of protectiveness toward their baby
