LITERATURE SEARCH SKILLS College of Engineering GENG G107 07: Engineering Skills & Ethics GENG 107: Engineering Skills & Ethics Literature Search Skills 1 THEE "LITERATUREE REVIEW W" The Literature Review is there for you to: o o o o provide details about the motivation for the project. state why the problem addressed by the report is important. describe what others have done and hence sets a benchmark for the current project. justify the use of specific solution techniques or problem solving procedures in your work. A thorough literature review is essential because it shows that you have studied rigorously what others have done. Where applicable, you should also include a critique of the available solutions to the problem that your are tackling. Make sure that you seek out the most recent information relating to the project. GENG 107: Engineering Skills & Ethics Literature Search Skills 2 THEE "LITERATUREE REVIEW W" Why always students avoid literature review? They do not know where to look for information. There may be a huge amount of published work on the subject area, dating back many years, and they find it difficult to judge which material is relevant. The work is a "hot-topic" and keeping track of the state-of-the-art is difficult. They find it difficult to summarize the ideas and results of numerous publications into a coherent single account. GENG 107: Engineering Skills & Ethics Literature Search Skills 3 TIPSS FORR LITERATUREE REVIEW Ask librarian for a guide. Nowadays, an increasing number of journals are available on-line, accessed via web browsers. When reading a technical paper, write down the key points and make a note of the journal or technical publication where the paper was published. When writing the Literature Review: Include only those work that is relevant to your work. Make sure that you have read and understood cited work. Organize your content according to ideas instead of individual publications. Do not simply quote or paraphrase the contents of published articles. Books (experts). Conference proceedings (seminar sessions, recent data). Encyclopedia articles (an overview of subject, references). Government reports (sponsored research). Patents (right to new invention). Popular press articles (news papers). Course notes. Internet sites. Most of the resources can be accessed online: Books Journals Press articles Encyclopedias Government reports Class notes Be careful searching the web!! It also contains a lot of unreliable information!! Be cautious if the articles are not peer reviewed!! Use advanced search tools with appropriate keyword, and try to access books, journals, reports. The number system 2. The name-year system 9Check what style is required when you write a report or a paper. 9Be consistent and stick to one of these citation styles. The Number System: With this system, references to published work is via the use of numbers, for example: There are many undergraduate texts on Process Control [1-4]. The most popular seems to be the book by Luyben. However, the only one to deal with process design and process control in an integrated manner is that by Marlin. When using the number-system citation style, the order of the corresponding reference list is important. That is, the publications in the reference list is presented in the order that they were cited. However, the reference list must not contain duplicates.
