In a perfect world, all families should be happy and everyone should get on well together. I know a lot of families that have many problems. Brothers and sisters, who don’t like each other, parent who never talk to each other. I wonder why this is. How can you live so close to your family members and feel apart from them? There is a lot of talk in the news about the breakdown of family life. Divorce is rising everywhere in the world. This means single parents have less time to spend with their children, which creates problems. Maybe the stress of modern life puts too much pressure on families. It seems as though fam- ily life was better a generation or two ago. Is this true for families in your country? If I want to be in shape, I have to ………?...................................................................................................................................... 6- Reading Part Today, I’ll tell you the story of my neighbor who died last month. My neighbor was a young man in his late twenties. He was a total loner, no friends, no family mem- bers, nothing. Two days later, his cousin showed up and it was our chance to inquire why all his relatives never visited him. His cousin told us that when our neighbor STUDY ENGLISH ANYWHERE 7 was young, he had a strict mother and a lenient father. He had no sib- lings as he was an only child. His mother used to ground him a lot as he was mischievous. While his father was a dead beat dad and had no control in the house. Suddenly, his father divorced his mother. The child went to live with his mother and so, was totally separated from his father. He was also separated from his father’s extended family. The mother then married another man and so, he got a step- father. To his surprise, the stepfather had children of his own. My neighbor and his mother moved to live with her new husband and his step brothers and sisters. The stepfather treated his children with extreme favoritism and they were given much better treatment than him. They were a close- knit and they used to keep him at arm’s length. Poor child, he was totally neglected and felt like a black sheep. That neglect pushed him to be rebellious and a trouble maker. He completed his university education and started to work. His mother suddenly died and so his stepfather became more abusive. As he was not in good terms withthat family, he decided to move out and live in another flat. That is how he became my neighbor. After we all understood his history, we felt too sorry for his sad child hood and regretted that we had never tried to get closer to him. 8 STUDY ENGLISH ANYWHERE Level 6 / Class 2 First Impressions 1- Vocabulary Snobbish Deep Hesitant Honest Optimistic Humble Fussy Fake Dishonest Pessimistic Conceited Hard Intelligent Nervous Reliable Arrogant Unlike Talkative Self-centered Unreliable Shallow Short-tempered Open-minded Selfish Shy Small-minded Smooth-talker Closed-minded Unselfish Outgoing 2- Expressions People say first People form opinions Change my mind impressions count. about you. Can you understand a lot about someone from the very first time you see them or meet them? I think I’m good at judging someone’s character from the first time I set eyes on them. It’s easy to understand if the person is my kind of person. First impressions count most when you meet someone important. If you have a job interview, it’s very im- portant to give a good first impression. The interviewer can decide if they like you as soon as you walk through the door. Are you well-dressed? Do you look happy? Do you greet the interviewer? All these things are important. I also think first im- pressions count when you meet your future in-laws. STUDY ENGLISH ANYWHERE 9 4- The main activity A - Ideas for Role-play: You and your students will act as two in a meeting in a casual party and each will impersonalize a new character far away from his own, and the others should evaluate each character according to the first impression they get. LO: Students will talk about how to express themselves with each other. LO: They will express freely their opinions about specific personal traits. B - Ideas for Debate: All our future relations with people must be based on our first impressions solely. LO: To talk about adjectives of personality. LO: They will use adjectives to describe others C - Ideas for Presentation: Talk about the general first impression you get from people. LO: They will use adjectives about people’s characteristic 10 STUDY ENGLISH ANYWHERE 5 - Grammar Part ( A lot/few/a little ) Direct attention to the use of ( little) with uncountable nouns. We use ( few) with plural countable nouns Questions 1. We have got quite …………………. friends there. ( few/little ) 2. Would you like some more soup?’ ‘Just..................................... , please.’ 6- Reading Part Jack and Jill were talking about their first impression about their friends with each other before they went to bed. Jill told Jack that his friend Bob was conceited, small-minded and short-tempered which make people think that he’s selfish. He’s very arrogant and snobbish. Jack replied, “Your friend Shimaa is very talkative with you but shy with others.” STUDY ENGLISH ANYWHERE 11 Jill replied, “She’s very open-minded, I can always rely on her, and she’s the most unselfish, sweet, kind, humble person I have ever been a friend with, unlike your friend Bob who’s unreliable and always pessimistic. But your other friend from America is very honest and very optimistic and outgoing and knows how to stay calm, He seems a little shallow at times but it’s always good not being fake with people.” Jack said, “you’re right when I first met him, I thought he was closed-minded and self-centered; he always seemed nervous or hesitant about something, like he was always in deep thought, but he’s a good guy and a great friend. Good night Hun. 12 STUDY ENGLISH ANYWHERE Level 6 / Class 3 Future 1- Vocabulary Destiny Mystery Traditions Impractical Inevitable Affection Planning Fortune-telling Possibly Targets Subsequently Accomplishment Stability Eventual Fortuneteller Forthcoming Time frame Satisfaction Era Fulfillment Ambitions Success Provision Short Term Expected Thinking Achievement Furnish Long term Predict 2 - Expressions How will you face your fear? I regret doing…. Fulfilling my dreams I wish if I can change the past… 3 - Listening The experts said the changes in the next century would be even more unbe - lievable. Researchers question two thousand adults about the predictions they thought were most likely to happen in the future. They predicted that in the future few people would go to an office but will work from home and have virtual work meetings. People will have advanced 3d printers that will let you download a de- sign for furniture or a food recipe and then print the sofa table or pizza at home. There will also be less need for visits to the doctor. We will all have a home health capsule that will tell us what the problem is and give us treatment. We will also be going into space for holidays and to get resources that we have used up on Earth. A prediction that was missing was whether people would still need to study English. STUDY ENGLISH ANYWHERE 13 4- The main activity A - Ideas for Role-play: Imagine that you are a famous Sci- entist with a broadcaster. What is your vision of the coming future? LO: The student will be able to describe using the future tense. B - Ideas for Presentation: Which era would you like to live in? Why? LOB: The student to express himself /herself using grammatically correct sentences (E.g. I would like to live in …………… era because…............ ) LO: The student to be able to describe using the vocabulary and expressions presented. C - Ideas for Debate: Old days are better than the future. LOB: The student to express using grammatically correct sentences. 14 STUDY ENGLISH ANYWHERE 5 - Grammar Part (possessive “apostrophe –s ,or of”) It shows a relationship of belonging between one thing and another, to form the possessive, add apostrophe + s to the noun. If the noun is plural, or already ends in s, just add an apostrophe after the s. To cover up this grammatical chunk, simply the teacher can give an example using apostrophe and ask the student to use (of) (vice versa) 6- Reading Part Many people worry about the future. They try to predict what will happen tomorrow, next week or next year. Some people even go to a fortune teller and they pay this person to tell them what will be forthcoming in their life, but these people don’t know – they just make up stories for money!! Most people spend time thinking and plan- ning their targets, dreams, and ambitions – things they want to achieve in life like a new job or getting married. They ask themselves about the expected timeframe needed to attain these future accomplishments and achievements – will it take 1 month, 1 year or 50 years? It is inevitable for people to have fear – everyone feels afraid at some time in life. They think, “what if I don’t succeed?” Or “what if I don’t have fulfillment of my dreams?!” Other people worry about the stability of their jobs or the country and if they can furnish their family with affection and provisions – can they give them enough love, food and clothing so they have satisfaction in life? Movies try to predict the future as well, but this is only science fiction, it’s not real, it’s impractical, not practical because you can never know what will happen in the next minute, which subsequently makes the future and our destiny a very big mystery to us all. STUDY ENGLISH ANYWHERE 15 Level 6 / Class 4 Media 1- Vocabulary Beyond the Communication Newspapers Television Influence scene Broadcast Audiovisual Magazines Journalism Rumor Media Disseminate Correspondent Public Opinion Multimedia Content Anchor Publishing Medium Presenter Print Reporter Software Billboard Traditional/ Influence Press Mass Utilize conventional 2- Expressions Store, transmit, and receive New-age media Influence and effects digital information (digital media) Information can easily To inform and teach In the late/early 20th century be broadcast citizens 3- Listening Where would we be without the media? How would we get information about the world? All of us are interested in the news. We all want to know what’s happening around the world. We switch the TV on just to watch the news. It seems as though every train passenger has a newspaper. The journalists who bring us the news do a very 16 STUDY ENGLISH ANYWHERE important job. Many risk their lives to bring us the news from the world’s danger zones. Unfortunately, many reporters are killed while they are covering a war. The media make us feel we are part of the world. We become experts on other coun - tries and on the big news stories. The media also bring us many unforgettable images, such as a man walking on the moon. Really, the media show us history as it happens. 4- The main activity A - Ideas for Debate: The media should be censored. The media gives criminals ideas. LO: The students should use vocabulary and expressions to discuss their opinions. B - Ideas for Presentation: Create an advertisement to promote something, and describe how/ where you will advertise. LOB: Students should think about their experiences and apply vocabulary to present new ideas. C - Role play: A client needs to explain his requirements for a web page to his/her web designer. Act as a news anchor and reporter or television host and celebrity talking about media coverage. LO: Use target vocabulary to act out each scenario, using the vocabulary how they might be used in real life. STUDY ENGLISH ANYWHERE 17 5 - Grammar Part (Relative clause “who”) Direct attention that we use ( who) for people, as subject For example: The woman who [she] lives across the road Questions: Do you have a friend who lives in another city?...................................................................................................................................... How do you feel about people who talk too much? Why?...................................................................................................................................... Tell me about a person who you get on well with?...................................................................................................................................... 6- Reading Part A famous news anchor felt that he needed to be a TV presenter, therefore, he decided to host a famous journalist during the news as a start. The news anchor wanted to look good and the journalist knew that, so he decided to embarrass him. They discussed media and its different forms such as multimedia, digital media, broadcast media and definitely news media. The journalist said that the printed media is the best type of media simply because you can carry the newspaper or the magazine around with you and read it when you have free time. He added that broadcast media is the worst form of media as it requires having enough free time for watching television. The host defended 18 STUDY ENGLISH ANYWHERE broadcast media by saying that it is worth the trouble because correspondents get inside the details of the event and they prepare useful reports. The journalist said to the news anchor,” Reporters do a great job in this field as they discover the information and describe it for their newspaper so it is still not worth wasting time to watch television.” The news anchor changed the subject then and he started talking about digital media and how useful it is as people know the events at the moment of its happening just by surfing the internet and visiting diverse websites and blogs. However, people who depend on print media must wait for it to be published which sometimes can be too late. Then, he asked the journalist whether the media should be censored or not. The journalist said that there must be cen- sorship over the media or else people will utilize for its own advantage. He added that scandals and rumors can be published for the sake of some personal public relations. The news anchor replied by saying that good presenter and journalists understand that it’s their duty to give people true information. They don’t let per - sonal feelings influence the truth. He went on saying public opinion usually finds out these things as people have a lot of sources for information. The traditional and conventional way of getting information through the newspaper doesn’t exist any longer. He concluded by saying that there mustn’t be censorship as the press should enjoy the freedom of speech. When the show was over, the owner of the TV channel decided to give the news anchor his own TV show and the advertise - ments were everywhere on billboards, television and the radio. A few weeks later, the owner noticed that the watching rate is very low so he surveyed the audience opinions’. They said that they have stopped watch- ing the news anchor since the debate that took place between him and the journalist as they felt that it was meant only for glory. So, they both lost their jobs. Do you really need it? In the 1980s there were no mobile phones. People still managed to phone their family and friends and do business. Of course, there were more public telephones then. There was a telephone box pretty much on every street corner. I wonder whether mobile phones are a good or bad thing. For sure, they are very convenient, but they can also be a nuisance. There’s nothing worse than talking to someone and then they ignore you for ten minutes while they answer their phone. I have even seen people on a date and one person chats on the phone for 30 minutes. How would life change for you if you didn’t have a mobile? Would you miss listening to other people’s conversations on the train? 20 STUDY ENGLISH ANYWHERE 4- The main activity A - Ideas for Presentation: Ask parents/ grandparents what life was like before mobiles. Recount a situation where you’re mobile “saved your life” LO: the students recall a situation and narrate it to the teacher. B - Ideas for Debate: Communication by letters is better than mobiles. LO: To speak about variety of options. 5- Grammar Part (Relative Clause: which, that) Direct attention: (which) and (that) refer to animals and things. That = who/whom/which: In informal language we can use that to replace who, whom and which. For example: You need to tick the box which says yes. He worked as an operator for a big company that manufactures cell phones. He loved cellular phones. He spent four hours everyday text messaging his friends. He sent a lot of SMSs and MMSs. He saved money for six months in order to buy a smart- phone. He thought that smartphones are amazing because they have a lot of applications. His modern smartphone had internet access so he spent all his day chatting with his friends on Facebook. The components of his smartphone were also amazing. The battery lasted for a long time and the hands-free looked nice. Moreover, the Bluetooth was very good. It also had a touch screen instead of the traditional keypad. The touch screen helped him to type faster so he communicated with a larger number of friends. He also spent a lot of time changing the settings of his smartphone. He used the most expensive network in Egypt because he wanted to have good signal strength all- day. By the end of the month, his bill was six thousand Egyptian pounds. As a result, he changed into the prepaid system instead of the postpaid. He charged 22 STUDY ENGLISH ANYWHERE his phone with a ten pounds card every month. He didn’t have enough money to pay the bill so he sold his smartphone. He had to use an old Nokia phone that he borrowed from his youngest sister. The Nokia phone was pink. It was also faulty so it didn’t work well. Then, he was fired from his job for spending a lot of time chatting on his phone. As a result, he understood that he was a careless user of his smart- phone. He realized that his way was harmful. He understood that cellphones are a devices of communication and they are not meant for fun. STUDY ENGLISH ANYWHERE 23 Level 6 / Class 6 Privacy 1- Vocabulary Policy Penetrate Usability Stalker Human Security Illegal Theft Laws Rights Stolen Hacker Offense Invade Hide Legal Confidential Breaches Respect Curious Protection Copyright Secrets Spy Monitor Permission Solitary Supervision Safety Calls 2- Expressions Being watched Ask for permission To keep an eye on someone Penetrate your privacy Safety cameras Hacking someone’s account 3- Listening Privacy is something that is becoming more important to all of us. A long time ago, it wasn’t so important. Our world was small. We knew and trusted everyone around us. We rarely had to give people our private information. Today, with the Internet and modern communications, privacy is a hot topic. It is now possible to steal someone’s identity. There are even websites that sell people’s privatedetails. We have to be really careful with what we put online. Especially on socialnetwork sites. The private info you put on these is there for the whole world to see. It’s easy to search for someone’s name in Google and find out all kinds of stuff. I think people need to think more about privacy and be more careful. 24 STUDY ENGLISH ANYWHERE 4- The main activity A - Ideas for Presentation: How do you maintain your privacy at home? On the Internet? When talking on the phone? LO: To speak about current actions/habitual actions 5 - Grammar Part (Relative clause: whose) Point out to (whose), the possessive relative pronoun of ( who) and ( which). (Whose) refers to people. His mother chooses a nice girl for him to marry. Khosousy is not happy in his marriage. Nothing in his life is private anymore. He has to share everything with his wife now. By the time, he feels that his wife invades his life. STUDY ENGLISH ANYWHERE 25 The wife feels that Khosousy hides many secrets and so she feels that she lives in solitary. She is after him all the time to tell her one of his secrets. He keeps on telling her to respect his privacy. He tells her that every human being has privacy rights. Khosousy feels that his wife is so curious and she is monitoring all his move- ments. He can’t even enjoy his telephone calls with his friends. One day, she asks to use his laptop. Khosousy thinks that his wife is now like a spy. She will penetrate his personal information, she will steal his password and she will track his emails. So, before giving her permission to use his laptop, he reads the privacy policy of his email account. He knows what to do if his password is stolen by a hacker. Khosousy also reads that according to the country laws, it is illegal for some- one to use anyone else’s email account, only under the supervision of the account owner. The wife keeps on pushing him, so finally, he agrees after increasing the securi- ty level of his account. She sees that he has increased the protection level on his laptop for more safety. Nothing on his laptop is available for public. Finally, the wife feels so miserable and asks him for a divorce. The couple sep- arates and Khosousy enjoys his privacy once again. 26 STUDY ENGLISH ANYWHERE Level 6 / Class 7 Transportation 1- Vocabulary Motorcycles Rocket Route Trucks Boat Airways Rail Way Canals Ship Airports Trains Path Seaports Natural Aviation Railway Waterways Watercrafts Jet Helicopters Stations Automobiles Automobile Spacecraft Aircraft Monorail Bicycles Ferry Function 2- Expressions Vehicles are pulled Enabled trade High-speed Emission of carbon by cables between peoples passenger train dioxide A significant Transport and the Cause air pollution contributor to Climate change environment global warming 3- Listening Transportation hasn’t really changed a lot in the past 100 years. When you think about changes in other areas of our life, transportation is pretty much the same as it was years ago. OK, cars, trains and airplanes are faster, but they’re not so different than they were 50 years ago. Take airplanes, for example. I think air travel has got worse. Fifty years ago, people flew and were given great service. Today, you are like sardines in a can. And look at cars. The cars from fifty years ago look nicer than today’s ones. They still had four wheels, used petrol and had a steering wheel. I think transportation will really only change when it becomes more person- al. I’m waiting for my own jet pack of mini-copter. STUDY ENGLISH ANYWHERE 27 4- The main activity A - Ideas for Role-Play: You and your Students will act as passengers on an Airplane, in a Car or on a bus. LO: Students will learn how to be polite and ask for things in a polite fashion. Using may I, can I and could you please. B - Ideas for Presentation: Students will write and then present, if they were in charge of transportation how would they make it better in Egypt. Instead, we just use who to refer to both subjects and objects of clauses. Whom = people For example: Mike went out and asked out the first girl whom he saw 6- Reading Part I have a dream to travel the world and to use as many different types of transport as I can. I’ve already used many types of transport and my first type was a bi- cycle!. My parents gave me a bike when i was 6 – it was pink with a little basket at the front and a little silver bell (ding, ding). When I was at school, I would go to the bus station every day to catch the bus to school and when i was 18, I bought my first automobile – it was a green car but i couldn’t drive it because i didn’t have my license!! I tried to ride a horse once but I almost fell off when it started to run so i don’t want to try that again! When I left Australia, I went to London on an aeroplane. I love flying but some- times you have to be at the airport 2 or 3 hours before your flight and that can be boring! I’ve also been in a helicopter which was great fun but when it took off, we thought we were going to fall out!! In Europe, they have some lovely canals and you can take a small boat and sail down these very pretty waterways. When I visited Canada, I went on a very big cruise ship - it was so big as it had elevators and escalators. It stopped at many different seaports. One day, we got STUDY ENGLISH ANYWHERE 29 off the ship and took a cable car up a mountain and a monorail around the town which was great because it went over the traffic. I’ve never been in a submarine under the water but I have been in a jet boat which went really fast over the water and made us scream!! What I really want to do is to travel to outer space in a spaceship but I think that will cost me too much in petroleum, so I guess I will have to get a motorcycle or a tuk tuk that goes as fast as a rocket!!! 30 STUDY ENGLISH ANYWHERE Level 6 / Class 8 Work 1- Vocabulary Handle Supervisor Casual Full-time Wages Boss Cooperate Colleague Part-time Employ Employee Duties Private Workaholic Dress code Sick leave Downsize Formal Terminate Maternity leave Experience Staff Whistleblower Salary Quit Develop Lay Employment Hire Fire 2- Expressions Dress code is smart I am a hard I will request a What is your casual worker. sick leave expected salary? But isn’t that what you always say Ya but this time is different. What are you looking for this time then actually I want to work for a web hosting company. What would you do there? Well in a nutshell you know Web hosting companies provide space for people to store and run their Web site. Well they allow people to run their websites without having to buy STUDY ENGLISH ANYWHERE 31 or maintain their own servers. And I’d like to work and technical support you know helping customers resolve computer related problems with their sites. And you know I’m a good communicator. So how is the pay for that kind of job? Well most people I know start out with a very reasonable salary. You can earn pay increas- es depending on your performance. So what about benefits. Oh the benefits are pretty good. They provide health insurance. Two weeks paid vacation a year and opportunities for advancement and in the end I’d like to work in a management position. He got his first job when he was nineteen, so he was still very young. He brought his personal problems to his work and he spent his time discussing his private issues. As a result, he was fired. Then, he got a job at a good company but after one month, the company lost a lot of money, therefore, the owner downsized his company. The third company moved its location from Cairo to Sohag so he was laid off. The young man decided that he needs to have two part-time jobs instead of one full-time job in case he lost one of them, he would have the other. After a couple of weeks, he received a job offer from a multinational company. Consequently, he quitted his two jobs. He was employed in that company. His employer was a very nice man. He gave his em- ployees a lot of benefits. They had a month sick leave and two years of maternity leave for women. He also gave high salaries and wages. Moreover, there was no STUDY ENGLISH ANYWHERE 33 dress code so he could wear casual clothes or formal clothes. There was a two- hour break every day. He worked at a very good department. All the members of the staff were very nice but one of his colleagues was a whistle-blower. He told his manager everything that was going on in the department. That whistle-blower envied the young man because he was a workaholic. He worked very hard so he told the boss some lies about him. As a result, he terminated his contract. He got sad and he kept looking for a job for a long time but he wasn’t hired. He suffered from unemployment. One day he said to himself,” I am a hard worker and I am a charismatic person and people love me. I am not repugnant so I can start my own business and I will have a lot of customers.” When he started his own business, he worked very hard and he became a very successful businessman. That was his last employment for the rest of his life.
