Show appreciation for sustainable practices by expressing a commitment to regularly using compost in personal or school gardening projects. ESSON 5: L COMPOSTING Compost is a natural fertilizer made by breaking down organic waste, like food scraps and plant materials, into nutrient-rich soil. This process helps plants grow better and reduces waste. USEANDCAREOFCOMPOST The whole process of composting takes four to six months. Be sure that the compost is “cooked” as characterized by its dark brown color. USEANDCAREOFCOMPOST To use the compost; Put it into the soil below the rows or hills in which the seeds of plants are to be placed. Spread evenly on the field and plowed under to avoid much of loss of nitrogen.
