TEXT AS CONNECTED DISCOURSE As a reader or a writer, you inevitably get involved with texts. Readers read texts, while writers write text. Thus, understanding the nature of text is essential part of learning how to read and write effectively. A text is a group of ideas put together to convey one main point or central idea to the reader. Discourse is an expression of ideas. It makes use of spoken and written language in a social context. PROPERTIES OF A WELL-WRITTEN TEXT Questions to ask before writing: What do I want to write about? Why should I write about it? What do I want to achieve in writing it? Characteristics of a well-written text: Organization Coherence and Cohesion Appropriate Language Use Proper Mechanics ORGANIZATION. It refers to the arrangement of ideas in a text. Using an outline can also help in organizing a text. With an outline, you can easily arrange your ideas in a hierarchy. Your readers can also clearly differentiate the general idea from the specific or subordinating ideas. COHERENCE AND COHESION Coherence refers to the unity of the ideas, sentences, and paragraphs in a text. Coherence is the unifying element of good writing. COHERENCE AND COHESION Cohesion, on the other hand, refers to the connection of ideas at the sentence level, or in other words, the grammatical aspects of writing. 1. I enjoy watching good movies. (parallelism is observed) APPROPRIATE LANGUAGE USE It refers to the acceptable writing style (I.e., word choice, sentence structure, and paragraph structure) for a particular form of a text. Tone refers to the attitude of the writer towards his work. It is affected by a writer’s choice of words, which in turn, determines his or her voice. Voice refers to the level of formality of the personality that the writer is trying to assume in writing a text. PROPER MECHANICS It refers to the conventions of writing which includes capitalization, punctuation, spelling, numerals, abbreviations, acronyms, and contractions.
