Information on the other hand, is data endowed with relevance and purpose. It is a collection of facts organized in such a way that they have value beyond the facts themselves, The value of information is directly linked to how it helps decision makers achieve their organization’s goals. Knowledge are accepted facts, principles, or rules of thumb that are useful for specific domains. Knowledge can be the result of inferences and implications produced from simple information facts. THE BASICS – WHAT IS INFORMATION? Information is data processed for some purpose. It can be considered to be ‘real’ if it meets certain criteria. 1. it must be communicated to the recipient 2. it must be in a language that is understood 3. it must be in a suitable form 4. it must be relevant for achieving some purpose Characteristics of a GOOD QUALITY INFORMATION For an information to be useful, it should have the following characteristics: Accurate Complete Cost-Beneficial User-Targeted Relevant Authoritative Timely Easy-to-Use Characteristics of a Good Quality Information (ACCURATE) Characteristic Definition Accurate Information should be fair and free from bias. Complete Contains all the important facts Cost-Beneficial Information should be analysed for its benefits against the cost of obtaining it User-targeted Information should be communicated in the style, format, detail and complexity which address the needs of users of the information. Relevant Information should be communicated to the right person Authoritative Information should come from reliable source. Timely Information should be communicated in time so that receiver of the information has enough time to decide appropriate actions based on the information received.
