Civic: to help and defend the poor and the oppressed. Moral: to teach good manners, hygiene, and democratic morality: and to fight religious fanaticism, weakness of character, and the policy of character, and the policy of obscurantism. THE KKK Katipunan Membership Originally the KKK recruited new members by means of TRIANGLE SYSTEM An original member would recruit two new members who did not know each other. A candidate for membership was first blindfolded and entered a secret room. In the room there was a table with a lamp, a skull, and a bolo. The blindfold was removed from his eyes. He was given a test on the history of the Philippines to show that he knew the Spaniards had oppressed the Filipinos. He had to pass other tests on his patriotism, courage and sincerity. THE KKK Katipunan Membership The first grade, known as the Katipon (member), wore a black hood in all meetings. The hood had a triangle of white ribbons, inside of which were the letters Z, LI, B., the Katipunan characters corresponding to the Roman A ng B, meaning Anak ng Bayan (Son of the People) the password of the Katipon. THE KKK Katipunan Membership The second grade, called Kawal (soldier) wore a green hood With a triangle composed of white lines. At the three angles were the letters Z, LI, B. that is Z in one angle. LI in another and B in the third. Suspended from the neck of a Kawal was a green ribbon with a medal at the end, the letter K in the ancient Tagalog syllabary appearing in the middle of the medal. The password was Gom-Bur-Za, taken from the names of the martyred priests Gomez, Burgos, and Zamora. THE KKK Katipunan Membership For the Katipon to graduate into Kawal, he must have brought into the society severalnew members. The Kawal became a Bayani upon becoming an officer of the Katipunan. In order for he members to recognize each other in the street, the society adopted countersigns; when a member met another member, he placed the palm of his hand on his breast, and as they passed each other he closed his hand, bringing the index finger and the thumb together. THE KKK Katipunan Government Kataastaasang Sanggunian (Supreme Council) - for the whole country -Consisted of a president, a fiscal, a secretary, a treasurer, and a comptroller. Sangguniang Bayan (Provincial Council) - for every province. -Sangguniang Balangay (Municipal Council) - for every town. The Judicial power of KKK was exercised by the Sangguniang Hukuman (Judicial Council) -It decided cases involving treachery among the members and quarrels. between them. THE KKK FLAG Note THE KKK The Great Plebeian Born in Tondo on November 30, 1863, the first child of poor parents. Named after St. Andrew the patron saint of Manila. He had three brothers and two sisters: Ciriaco Procopio Espiridiona Troadio Maxima His parents died when he was 14 years old. Andres Bonifacio He supported his siblings by selling bamboo canes and paper fans in the city streets. THE KKK Brains of the Katipunan Born in Trozo (Tondo), Manila on December 15, 1875. His father died shortly after he was born so he was adopted by his uncle Don Jose Dizon Obtained the Bachelor of Arts' degree in Colegio de San Juan de Letran He died on April 16, 1899 at the age of 23 years old because of Malaria. The document was written by Emilio Jacinto in the 1896, Jacinto was only 18 years old when he joined the movement. Emilio Jacinto He was a law student at the Universidad de Santo Tomas T H E K K K A N D T H E K A R T I LYA N G K AT I P U N A N Kartilya originate from the word "Cartilla" which means the paper given to a new student in learning specific subject. Is arguably the most important organization formed in the Philippine history. (1) a united Filipino nation that would revolt against the Spaniards for (2) the total independence of the country from Spain. T H E K K K A N D T H E K A R T I LYA N G K AT I P U N A N ( B E F O R E T H E K AT I P U N A N ) Previous armed revolts had already occurred before the foundation of the Katipunan, but note of them envisioned a unified Filipino nation revolting against the colonizers. For example, Diego Silang was known as an Ilocano who took up his arms led one of the longest running revolts in the country. His locality referred to him as El Rey de Ilocos or ( The King of Ilocos). On the other hand, the propaganda movements led by the ilustrados like Marvelo H. del Pilar. Graciano Lopez Jaena, and Jose Rizal did not envision a total separation of the Philippines from Spain, but only demanded equal rights, representation, and protection from the abuses of the friars. T H E K K K A N D T H E K A R T I LYA N G K AT I P U N A N In the conduct of their struggle, Katipunan created a complex structure and a defined value system that would guide the organization as a collective aspiring for a single goal. T H E K K K A N D T H E K A R T I LYA N G K AT I P U N A N One of the most important Katipunan documente was the Kartilya ng Katipunan. The original title of the document was "Manga [sic] Arul Nang (sic) Katipunan ng mga A.N.B." or "Lessons of the Organization of the Sons of Country." T H E K K K A N D T H E K A R T I LYA N G K AT I P U N A N The Kartilya can be treated as the Katipunan's code of conduct. The uprising of KKK The violent struggle of the Filipinos against the Spaniards started in 1896. There are 8 provinces in the Philippines who started their revolution. Manila, Cavite, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Tarlac, Batangas, Laguna, Pampanga The uprising of KKK August 23, 1896, Bonifacio and his kindred Katipuneros tore their cedulas (living arrangement authentication) which was set apart as the noteworthy "Cry of Balintawak" which really happened in Pugadlawin. In December 31,1896 Andres Bonifacio went to Cavite to resolve the conflict between the magdalo and magdiwang group. The uprising of KKK February 17, 1897 the bloodiest encounter between the Spanish and Filipino forces happened in the battle of Zapote bridge. The magdiwang group of the katipunan lead by Adil Berto Evangelista prevent the passage of the Spanish reinforcement in Cavite. April 28, 1897 the council of war under the government of Emilio Aguinaldo had the meeting and they recommend the execution of Andress and Procopio Bonifacio. April 23, 1897 Governor General Fernando Primo de Rivera issued a decree offering a pardon to the Filipino rebels, and when the Filipinos ignored it, he extended it until May 17, 1897. The chances of reconciliation was mediated by Pedro Alejandro Paterno y Vera Ignacio he was the creole who wanted the Spanish government to take the administration of the country.
