The election was the first general election victory for the Labour Party since 2005, and ended the Conservative Party's fourteen-year tenure as the governing party. Labour achieved a 174-seat simple majority and a total of 411 seats, the party's second-best result in terms of seat share after the 1997 general election. The Conservative Party experienced the largest defeat in its history, being reduced to 121 seats on a vote share of 23.7 per cent.
