Summary

These lecture notes cover health program planning and evaluation, specifically focusing on logic models. The document details the components of a logic model, including goals, inputs, activities, audience, outputs, outcomes, situation, assumptions, and strategies. It also explains how to create a logic model and how program theory differs from a logic model. The notes were likely presented by Dr. Abdelsalam Mohamed Daoud at Jazan University.

Health Program Planning and Evaluation Dr. Abdelsalam Mohamed Daoud Department of Epidemiology Faculty of Public Health Jazan University 1 Logic model ❖ A logic model is a visual illustration of a program’s resources, activities and expected outcomes. ❖ It is a tool used to simplify complex relationships between various components and can be used during program planning, implementation and evaluation. ❖ A term that is sometimes used concurrently with logic models is theory of change. ❖ Theory of change is a foundational concept that provides an understanding of the pathway to bring about change. ❖ It clarifies expectations amongst diverse stakeholders and highlights common understanding regarding intended outcomes of the proposed change. ❖ Logic models can be viewed as a representation of the program’s underlying theory of change. 2 Components of a logic model Component Description Example Goal The overall long-term health outcomes the program hopes to achieve. To prevent diet-related health problems in adulthood. Inputs The resources invested into Staff Funding Time a program or initiative. Materials Supplies Activities Activities or interventions that will be carried out as part of the program. Public service announcements (PSAs) on health risks of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) Workshops on healthy eating for children and their parents Bi-weekly community sports activities for neighborhood adolescents 3 Components of a logic model Component Audience Description Example Whom the program is A program designed to train targeting. Programs may teachers on how to provide target specific groups physical activity to students. such as young children or Primary audience: teachers older adults but may also Secondary audience: students be broad in nature. Primary audience: the main population that is being targeted. Secondary audience: groups who are impacted or influenced by a program, but are not the direct recipients of the 4 program. Components of a logic model Component Description Example Outputs Products that are Number of PSAs run during a produced from program health promotion campaign activities or Number of workshops provided interventions. Outputs on healthy eating can be viewed as Percentage of organized quantifying activities and community sports activities held providing numeric values or attributing percentages. Outcomes The changes expected to result from the program. Outcomes range from short-term to long-term, and are associated with changes in knowledge, awareness, behaviour and Increased awareness of the health risks of STIs Increased knowledge on healthy foods and proper food handling skills Reduction in the number of secondary students reporting physical inactivity on school 5 Additional possible components of logic models Component Situation Description Example The situational Increased rates of context that lead to obesity lead to the the creation of the creation of a physical program. activity program for adolescents aged 12 to 18 years old Increased incidence of gonorrhea and low perceived susceptibility to sexually transmitted infections (STIs) amongst 6 14 to 24 year olds ‫مكونات إضافية محتملة للنماذج ا&نطقية‬ Additional possible components of logic models Component Description Example Assumptions Underlying theories and Adolescents are interested in beliefs about the program and physical activity programs its context which can The public has access to a radio influence the development of and will hear the PSAs a program and which activities are implemented. Transparency around assumptions makes explicit the beliefs that underlie chosen actions. External factors Factors that impact the program but are beyond the control of program planners and overseers. Factors may be positive or negative and are likely to influence program Cultural norms Political climate Social policies Environmental factors 7 Additional possible components of logic models Component Strategies ‫ا*ستراتيجيات‬ Description A broad approach or plan to facilitate change. Example The Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion identifies five strategies to consider when developing health promotion programs: Build healthy public policy Create supportive environments Strengthen community action Develop personal skills Re-orient health services 8 The final logic model has these 6 components ‫كيف يمكنك إنشاء نموذج منطقي؟‬ How do you create a logic model? .‫ولى‬$‫نشاء مسودتك ا‬0 ‫وجودة‬3‫كتوبة ا‬3‫واد ا‬3‫نطقي في ا‬3‫ابحث عن النموذج ا‬  Find the logic model in existing written materials to create your first draft. .‫قصودة‬3‫ستخدميه واستخداماته ا‬3 ‫ناسب للنموذج‬3‫تحديد النطاق ا‬  Determine the appropriate scope of the model for its intended users and uses. .R‫تحقق مما إذا كان النموذج منطقيا وكام‬  Check whether the model makes sense and is complete.  The most essential aspects of logic model is drawing the model. .‫نطقي هي رسم النموذج‬3‫كثر جوهرية للنموذج ا‬$‫الجوانب ا‬  Revisit and be ready to revise the model as .‫راجعة النموذج حسب الضرورة‬3 ‫أعد النظر في النموذج وكن مستعدا‬ necessary. Logic models are diagrams which show the major components of a program. .‫كونات الرئيسية للبرنامج‬1‫نطقية هي مخططات توضح ا‬1‫النماذج ا‬ ‫كيف تختلف نظرية البرنامج عن النموذج ا&نطقي؟‬ How does a program theory differ from a logic model? .‫تشبه نظرية البرنامج في ا&فهوم النماذج ا&نطقية‬  A program theory is similar in concept to logic models. .‫ مثل مخطط انسيابي‬،‫ رسم يوضح كيف يؤدي شيء إلى الشيء التالي‬- ‫ النموذج ا&نطقي هو صورة لنظرية برنامجك‬،‫بعبارات بسيطة‬  In simple terms, a logic model is a picture of your program theory – a drawing that shows how one thing ‫يستخدم النموذج ا&نطقي عبارات قصيرة لتمثيل ا^شياء‬ leads to the next, like a flow chart. .‫التي تشرحها بمزيد من التفصيل في نظرية البرنامج‬  A logic model uses short phrases to represent things that you explain in more detail in the program theory.  A logic model can just use an arrow to show that one thing leads to the next; program theory needs to lay out the evidence to show why you believe one thing will lead ‫ظهار أن شيئا ما يؤدي إلى‬h ‫يمكن للنموذج ا&نطقي أن يستخدم سهما فقط‬ to the next. ‫ظهار سبب اعتقادك بأن‬h ‫الشيء التالي؛ تحتاج نظرية البرنامج إلى وضع ا^دلة‬ .‫شيئا ما سيؤدي إلى الشيء التالي‬
