BACKGROUND ABOUT THE THEORIST: BACKGROUND ABOUT THE THEORIST: Four Phases of the therapeutic: Nurse- Patient Relationship 4 MAJOR CONCEPTS OF THE THEORY: The following are the roles of the Nurse in the Therapeutic relationship identified by Peplau: INTERPERSONAL THEORY AND NURSING PROCESS: CONCEPTS BEING UTILIZED: The theory explains the purpose of nursing is to help others identify their felt difficulties. Nurses should apply principles of human relations to the problems that arise at all levels of experience. Peplau's theory explains the phases of interpersonal process, roles in nursing situations and methods for studying nursing as an interpersonal process. Nursing is therapeutic in that it is a healing art, assisting an individual who is sick or in need of health care. Nursing is an interpersonal process because it involves interaction between two or more individuals with a common goal. The attainment of goal is achieved through the use of a series of steps following a series of pattern. The nurse and patient work together so both become mature and knowledgeable in the process. THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK: The theory entails the healthcare practitioner attempting to comprehend both their own and their clients' behavior (Adams 2017). According to Adams (2017), the nurse-client connection begins with 'orientation,' which occurs when the client discloses the issue for which they want the nurse's assistance. In this approach, 'identification,' the next stage of the nurse-client interaction, entails the nurse educating the client. At this stage of the partnership, the emphasis is on earning respect and trying to meet the client's needs (Adams 2017). Exploitation is the third phase of the nurse-client interaction. The nurse will encourage the client to change their behavior at this point. In an ideal world, the client's behavioral modifications will assist them in meeting their needs, and the nurse will be less reliant on them. The ultimate stage is referred to as "termination." This stage entails the client being able to self-manage their first issue of concern, as the name implies. The client may then be released from the nurse's care (Adams 2017). Motivational interviewing, client self-management, making informed decisions, and client participation are all examples of Peplau's Theory (D'Antionio, Beeber, Sills, & Naegle, 2014). SIGNIFICANCE OF THE THEORY: Hildegard Peplau’s Interpersonal Relations Theory emphasized the nurse-client relationship as the foundation of nursing practice. It emphasized the give-and-take of nurse-client relationships that was seen by many as revolutionary. Peplau went on to form an interpersonal model emphasizing the need for a partnership between nurse and client as opposed to the client passively receiving treatment and the nurse passively acting out doctor’s orders. The four components of the theory are person, which is a developing organism that tries to reduce anxiety caused by needs; environment, which consists of existing forces outside of the person and put in the context of culture; health, which is a word symbol that implies a forward movement of personality and nursing, which is a significant therapeutic interpersonal process that functions cooperatively with another human process that makes health possible for individuals in communities.
