SOCIETY AND CULTURE 3 The Dark Ages is a term for the Early Middle Ages, or occasionally the entire Middle Ages, in Western Europe after the fall of the Western Roman Empire that characterizes it as marked by economic, intellectual and cultural decline. In the year 476 A.D. , the great civilization of Rome collapsed, thus bringing Europe into a time of "darkness."476 A.D. marked the fall of Ancient Rome, the great civilization which ruled most of Europe until its fall. This collapse was limited to Western Rome, which the Byzantine Empire, also referred to as the Eastern Roman Empire or Byzantium, was the continuation of the Roman Empire in its eastern provinces during Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, when its capital city was Constantinople as the actual seat of ancient Rome. Eastern Rome, centered on Constantinople and continued to exist for many more centuries. Byzantine art, architecture, paintings, and other visual arts produced in the Middle Ages in the Byzantine Empire (centered at Constantinople) and in various areas that came under its influence. Columbus made his voyage at the Americas in 1492. Trade, diplomacy and conquest connected Christendom to the wider world, which in turn had a great impact on art. Artists travelled both within and between countries and on occasion, even between continents. Such mobility was facilitated by the network of the European courts which were instrumental in the rapid spread of the Italian Renaissance. The church forbids displaying the naked human body 13 3 MAJOR PERIODS OF MEDIEVAL ART  EARLY CHRISTIAN  ROMANESQUE  GOTHIC 15 EARLY CHRISTIAN AGE -350 C.E The catholic church had two main centers of power: Rome and Constantinople Medieval art was popular in house of worship and was used as decoration for the public‟s appreciation 16 ROMANESQUE ARCHITECTURE -11th Century Semi-circular arches, heavy stone walls, and stable construction in monasteries and churches marked the growth of the European City 17 GOTHIC STYLE -12th Century Was developed as a result of the French Monarchy “Menacing gargoyles and flying buttress in Gothic Cathedral” 18 Famous artist of Medieval Period DUCCIO di BOUNINSEGNA, founder of the Sienese School painting , was one of the greatest Italian painters “MAESTA has been recognized as the greatest of all his works” 19 RENAISSANCE PERIOD Renaissance art is marked by the gradual shift from the abstract forms of the medieval period to the representational forms of the 15th century. 20 3 MAJOR PERIODS OF RENAISSANCE ART  PROTO-RENAISSANCE  EARLY RENAISSANCE ART  HIGH RENAISSANCE 23 Renaissance Proto-Renaissance Art (1300-1400) It is refer to the Renaissance in Italy, their activities that pioneered ‘’figurative realism’’. It is the foundation of what considered as the period of Italian Renaissance. 24 Early Renaissance Art (1400-1500) In early renaissance, one of the principal characteristics is „‟humanism‟‟. It is a term that referred to as revived classical antiquity meaning its concern is with the „‟studies of human‟‟- that is grammar, history and poetry and even philosophy “I wonder lonely as a cloud” By: William Shakespeare 25 High Renaissance (1500-1600) It is the period of the most exceptional Artistic production of masterpiece in Italian state. It is the period of the best known paintings, sculptures, and architecture. He serves as the role model applying the scientific method to every aspect of life, including art and music. “Monalisa and The Last Supper” 27 MICHELANGELO Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni known as Michelangelo was an Italian sculptor, painter, architect, and poet of high renaissance period. “The frescoes on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel” 28 Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino Known as Raphael was an Italian painter, sculptor, and architect of high renaissance period. He was known and admired for its clarity of form, ease of composition and visual idea of human grandeur (it means high rank or important). 29
