Reference Card # Date: Using a Dictionary A dictionary is a book that contains a list of words in alphabetical order along with their meanings, pronunciations, and sometimes examples of how the words are used in sentences. It is a helpful tool for finding the definitions of unfamiliar words when reading or writing. Examples: 1. If you come across the word "enormous" in a story and you're not sure what it means, you can look it up in a dictionary to find out that it means very large or huge. 2. When you need to spell a word correctly for a school assignment, you can use a dictionary to check the spelling and make sure it is right. Etymology Etymology is the study of the origin of words and how their meanings have changed over time. It helps us understand where words come from and how they have evolved. Foreign: When a word comes from another language. For example, the English word "piano" comes from the Italian word "pianoforte." Clipped: When a word is shortened by cutting off part of it. For example, "phone" is a clipped form of "telephone." Blended: When two words are combined to make a new word. For example, "brunch" is a blend of "breakfast" and "lunch." Language Arts 4_Using the Dictionary and Etymology MGIP 2024-2025 ACRONYM: A word formed from the initial letters of other words, pronounced as a single word. For example, "NASA" stands for National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Language Arts 4_Using the Dictionary and Etymology MGIP 2024-2025
