Sustainable Event Destinations Tyranny of Distance The travel of participants and the transport of equipment, infrastructure, materials, merchandise and catering to event location will probably be the largest environmental impact. Reduce impact Attendee Travel – – – – Select the event site in a destination and venue as close as possible to potential attendees Change locations to allow fair access to all potential attendees (rotate locations) Reduce air travel or use travel mode with lesser GHG emissions Purchase carbon offset (check out https://www.carbonfootprint.com/carbonoffsetprojects.html ) Transportation – Locally source items for production of event Source: Event Sustainability Management (Jones, 2018) 4 1. Sustainable Event Destinations Definition of Sustainable Event Destination Countries or cities with existing and evident sustainability-related attributes, that are likely to have a support system for sustainable event productions. Sustainable Event Destinations Event Industry Readiness at a destination The availability of sustainable solutions in the destination’s supply chain that will enable the event’s sustainability performance Review the existence of sustainably built and operated venues Other suppliers required may include:        Sustainably operated accommodations “green” printing and signage producers Sustainable caterers Compostable serviceware Compost toilets Décor services using re-usable or recycled materials Merchandise and décor providers with sustainable options - that are recycled, recyclable or reusable Source: Event Sustainability Management (Jones, 2018) 7 1. Sustainable Event Destinations Event Industry Readiness at a destination (cont’d) The availability of sustainable solutions in the destination’s supply chain that will enable the event’s sustainability performance Other suppliers required may include:  AV suppliers with low energy equipment  Mobile solar generators and lighting towers  Biodiesel transportation  Local produce, local brewery or winery  Composting waste facility  Non-chemical cleaning and waste services Source: Event Sustainability Management (Jones, 2018) 8 1. Sustainable Event Destinations Event Industry Readiness at a destination (cont’d) The availability of sustainable solutions in the destination’s supply chain that will enable the event’s sustainability performance Other support systems, such as:  Cycling advocacy groups – to help with “active travel”  Carpooling or ride-share facilities  Excess food collection Source: Event Sustainability Management (Jones, 2018) 9 Learning Outcomes 1. Sustainable Venue and Accommodation Types of Venues 4. Outdoor - Open spaces such as greenfield sites, parks, reserves, closed off streets or sports field. Sustainable Venue and Accommodation Events at natural venues – benefits include:  Opportunity to showcase environmental sustainability in action – such as environmental stewardship themes  Engage attendees with interactions and visible protection of natural environment  The natural environment can become a feature of the experience and part of the event’s program or entertainment  Attendees are offered a sense of adventure as they explore the event landscape and hidden feature found in natural settings Source: Event Sustainability Management (Jones, 2018) 14 2. Sustainable Venue and Accommodation Natural physical assets and features need to be managed correctly  Minimising trampling  Protect sensitive areas – riparian zones (area leading from land to water)  Cordon off garden beds (if in parks)  Protect or minimize disruption to wildlife habitat (birds, deers, rabbits)  Prevent waste water run-off into waterways until filtered or treated  Prevent airborne litter from dispersal (confetti, plastic bags, leaflets, glitter) Source: Event Sustainability Management (Jones, 2018) 15 2. Sustainable Venue and Accommodation Events in natural venues – may require preparations To make a site suitable, a work permit may require considerations of environmental impacts such as: 1. Archeological and heritage issues 2. Terrestrial surfaces 3. Terrestrial sediment and erosion 4. Fauna and flora 5. Re-vegetation and rehabilitation plan 6. Light and noise 7. Energy provision 8. Use of hazardous substances 9. Solid, liquid and gaseous water (GHGs) 10. Dust management 11. Use of water for dust suppression 12. Water diversion/flow 13. Marine environment protection – including turbidation and underwater noise Source: Event Sustainability Management (Jones, 2018) 16 2. Sustainable Venue and Accommodation Accommodations - required for many events to house production crew, performers, officials, in addition to attendees and spectators Benefits from sustainable events  Attendee bookings for lodging – revenue to hotels, Airbnb, resorts, backpackers, homestays, specialty lodgings  Influence on lodging’s sustainable operations  Increase awareness of sustainable best practices  Retrofitting or use of sustainable appliances or equipment  Creating positive legacies Source: Event Sustainability Management (Jones, 2018) 17 2.
