Ecological Relationships What are ecological relationships? Symbiosis Symbiosis – A close relationship between two species. Mutualism Parasitism Commensalism Symbiosis review Let’s play a game – Species Survival Each student is assigned an animal card Each animal has different needs (food, Water, Shelter) This game will have 2 rounds: In each round students will try to meet their survival needs by collecting the correct number of food, Water, and Shelter cards At the end of each round students who DID NOT meet their needs will lose 1 of their 2 lives. Running, pushing, or other physical contact will lose you a life automatically. Post Game discussion How did the scarcity (small amount) of resources affect your strategy? Did anyone lose a life because they couldn't gather enough resources? What do you think that represents in the real world? How does competition for resources shape ecosystems in nature? This Game is an example of COMPETITION for resources– this is one of the types of ecological relationships that we will learn about today. Intro video – Stop at 3:30 Jump to 6:00 Competition – When species compete for the same resources in the same location. What are some resources that species may compete for? Food Water Space Mates Competition can happen in 2 ways WITHIN a species ex) two male birds competing for a mates in the same region - colourful feathers or birdsong. or BETWEEN multiple species. ex) hyenas and lions hunting for prey in the same area. Some examples Humans can make competition more intense Think about our game. In round 2 there were less of each resource (food, Water, Shelter) How did this impact the game? How does this impact species in an ecosystem? What human activities may lead to a lack of resources in an ecosystem? Predation – members of one species (the predator) eat members of another species (the prey). Take a look at this graph. What do you notice? What could happen if one of these species disappeared? Your Task Pick an animal. Research and record the following information into your notes from today's lesson 1 example of predation 1 example of competition (with another species) 1 example of symbiosis
