Current affairs from Pratiyogita Darpan (May 2024 — Feb 2023 DEFENCE India-Japan Joint Military Exercise Dharma Guardian The Joint Military Exercise ‘Dharma Guardian’ between the Indian Army and the Japan Ground Self Defence Force was conducted from 25th February to 9th March, 2024 at Mahajan Field Firing Ranges in Rajasthan. The Japanese contingent is from the 34th Infantry Regiment, while the Indian Army contingent from the Rajputana Rifles Battalion participated in the exercise. Each contingent comprises 40 personnel. The Objective was to foster Military Cooperation and enhance combined capabilities for joint operations in semi-urban environments under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter. The Focus Areas of the exercise were physical fitness, joint planning, joint tactical drills, and basics of special arms skills. The Tactical Drills Included establishing a Temporary Operating Base, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnais- sance (ISR) Grid, Mobile Vehicle Check Post, Cordon and Search Operations, Heliborne operations, and House Intervention Drills. The Weapon and Equipment Display was Show- casing ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative and the growing defence industrial capability of India. During the Harbour Phase from March 18 to 25, personnel from both navies engaged in various activities including training visits, subject matter expert exchanges, sports events, and social interactions. Following the Harbour Phase, the ships carrying troops sailed for the Sea Phase to conduct maritime, amphibious, and Humani- tarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations based on simulated scenarios. The exercise encompassed an area of 17000 square kilometres. Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Oman, India, Pakistan and South Africa were official observers. Maritime Security Belt-2024 were aimed at jointly maintaining regional maritime security. The exercise was focusing on anti-piracy and search and rescue operations. Air Chief Marshal V.R. Chaudhari, Chief of the Air Staff, presided over the launch ceremony. According to the launch tradition Mrs. Neeta Chaudhari, President AFFWA, launched the ships to the invocation from Atharva Veda, following maritime tradition. The ships were rechristened as Agray and Akshay, named after erstwhile Abhay Class Corvettes Agray and Akshay of the Indian Navy. The contract for building eight ASW SWC ships was signed between the Ministry of Defence (MOD) and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata, on April 29, 2019. The exercise lasted nearly 50 minutes with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and delegates from at least 30 countries in attendance. The exercise aimed to demonstrate indigenous defence capabilities and showcase integration among the three forces in areas such as communications, training, interoperability, and logistics. Hari Kumar, Chief of the Naval Staff. This event marks an important milestone in the Navy’s effort to enhance security infrastructure at the strategically significant Lakshadweep Islands. Naval Detachment Minicoy was established in the early 1980s under the operational command of the Naval Officer-in-Charge (Lakshadweep).
