Sustenance and Strengthening Phase PRE ENTRY PHASE- Activities done before going to the community. 1. Conducts Preliminary Investigation- site selection CRITERIA FOR SITE SELECTION a. Majority of population belongs to poor sector b. Health services in the site is inaccessible/ inadequate - lack of primary/ secondary within a 30 min ride - No Brgy health station/ non operation, unmanned c. Poor Health Status of the community - High malnutrition rate - High Infant mortality rate - Lack of sanitary toilet - High incidence of communicable disease - Area has peace and order to ensure safety of staff, students, faculty members - Acceptance of the program by the community to ensure their participation - Area not served by other agencies with the same program 2. Make courtesy call to the local executive officials, mayor, local health officer, social service, barangay officials 3. Generate secondary data a. From provincial, city health offices, rural health units 4. Make a list of potential barangays 5. Conduct ocular survey ( site accessibility, geographic terrain, safety, available physical resources & no. of families. 6. Identify site 7. Coordinate with LGU and NGO for assistance in the implementation of the Program 8. Develop community profile from secondary data a. Demographic profile b. Socio-economic Status c. Infrastructure/ Physical resource d. Health Conditions/ problems e. Community Problems 9. Conduct baseline study d. Assess sources of income, employment and education status. e. Look for health centers f. Assess Health Status of the community ▪ Assess morbidity, condition, mortality rate and causes ▪ Measures height and weight of the children ▪ Appraise the garbage disposal system and facilities g. Interviews for incidence of crime, drug addiction or harmful situation/ elements h. Appraise attitude of residents in relation to the program i. Interviews to check if other agencies are doing the same work in the community j. Form of the survey must be coded according to zone and number of house included in the survey. k. Spot Map id made with proper numbering of houses of each family, with proper coding according to zones 10. Develop survey tools 11. Orientation of the staff/ students in making baseline survey ENTRY PHASE – Student Activities Integration in the community residents thru immersion in the community to learn the local culture, local history, economy, leadership, lifestyle. 1. Integration of the community OBJECTIVES: TO ESTABLISH RAPPORT WITH RESIDENTS, TO LEARN THE LOCAL CULTURE, LOCAL HISTORY, ECONOMY, LEADERSHIP AND LIFESTYLE OF THE COMMUNITY a. Activities: Partiipate in production activities (planting, harvesting rice, fishing) b. House to House visit c. Converse with people in places where they usually gather d. Lend a hand in doing household chores (cooking fetching water, baby sitting, marketing , housekeeping) e. Avoid gambling/ drinking f. Do not expect to be treated as visitors 2. Conduct deeper social investigation OBJECTIVES: a. TO GATHER DATA ON GEOGRAPHIC, ECONOMIC, POLITICAL, SOCIO CULTURAL that will identify issues and problems of the community that needs short term and long term soln’s b. TO IDENTIFY CLASS AND SECTORS OF SOCIETY AND DETERMINE THEIR INTEREST AND ATTITUDES TOWARDS THEIR PROBLEM c. TO DETERMINE THE CORRECT APPROACH TO ORAGNIZING. d. TO PROVIDE BASIS FOR PLANNING AND PROGRAMMING OF ORGANIZING ACTIVITIES SOCIAL INVESTAGATION(SI) - Process of systematically learning and analyzing the various structures in the community (economic, political, socio-cultural) - Result of this is the community diagnosis/ study a. Community dx/ study a scientific collation and synthesis of data gathered to draw clear picture of the community METHODOLOGY AND GUIDELINES IN SI: Conduct social interview thru: h2h visits, informal-formal gatherings, participation in production activities Observation thru: pure observation, participant observation Examination/ review of secondary data 3. Disseminate information on the aims of the programs a. Activities: Conduct delivery of basic health services, b. Identify core group members c. Small group discussion d. Home visits 4. Preparation for selection of core group members CRITERIA FOR CORE GROUP MEMBERS: a. Respected community members b. Belongs to poor sector, represents all zones/ families of brgys c. Responsible, committed, ready to serve others without expecting something in return d. Willing to learn e. Can communicate to a group 5. Defines roles and function of core groups a. Prepare the community for health and development work b. Organize research team for the conduct of community assessment c. Set-up CHO & Identify CHWs d. Mobilize community residents to act on immediate health needs by participating in delivey of essential health services 6. Delivery of basic health services a. H-to-H visitations of students thru BP taking, weighing of children 7. Continue social Investigation ▪ Discover pressing needs of the community, values, beliefs, resources of the community that affect health. 8. Conduct teambuilding and informal education of the core group 9. Presentation of the baseline survey results to the community residents OBJECTIVES: TO HELP THE RESIDENTS UNDERSTAND ABOUT HEALTH SITUATION OF THE COMMUNITY 10. Conduct self -awareness leadership training (SALT) OBJECTIVES: TO HELP DISCOVER THEIR POTENTIALS, TALENTS AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR GROWTH TO BE DISCUSS IN SEMINAR: a. Concept of Man b. Communication oragnization and leadership c. National health situation d. Local health services, basic health care 11. Conduct community assessment a. Identify the data needed and the data source b. Identify type of research being undertaken c. Formulate research tools d. Validate research tool and revise as needed e. Plan how to conduct the research- task, personnel, when, how f. Collect data g. Tabulate data h. Analyze/interpret data in terms of observatioon, cause and effect, initial observation 12. Conduct community assembly to the present the following: a. Results of community diagnosis/ assessment b. Use visual aids c. Discuss problems/ needs d. Identified whart needs prioritization 13. Establish networks with GO, NGO other persons or agencies a. Generate resources for maintaining and sustaining health activities b. Raise consciousness of the community regarding health and other issues c. Mobilize the residents to act on their programs and other issues that affect them.
