Name: ________________________ 11 Curriculum Connection B2.1, B2.2 What is the Circulatory System? The circulatory system is the movement of blood through the body. The blood carries nutrients to the cells in our body to feed them and help them fight disease. Therefore, the circulatory system’s main job is to send nutrients in blood to the rest of our body. Meet the Team - Organs in the Circulatory System The main organs in the circulatory system are blood vessels and the heart. There are three types of blood vessels: arteries, veins, and capillaries. 1) 2) 3) Arteries carry oxygenated blood away from the heart to the rest of the body. You can remember this by recalling “A is for ‘artery’ and ‘away’ (from the heart). Veins carry oxygen-depleted blood back to the heart Capillaries are tiny blood vessels that connect arteries to veins Oxygen and Blood Yes, there is oxygen in our blood. The cells in our body need oxygen to survive. The only way they get oxygen is from the heart pumping blood filled with oxygen to them. The heart does this by sending blood through the lungs, where oxygen is put into the blood. This oxygen rich blood is sent away from the heart via arteries. When the cells in our bodies use the oxygen, the used blood is sent back by veins to the heart and lungs so it can get more oxygen. This entire process takes about 1-2 minutes for blood to circulate through your entire body! The Heart Your heart is a muscle that acts like 2 pumps. On the right side of your heart, used blood from the body is received and pumped to the lungs to get oxygen. On the left side, the heart receives blood from the lungs and pumps it to the body. The heart is a complex organ. Learn more about the parts of the heart below.
