Challenges at Sea! Students will be divided by rows. They will brainstorm the possible challenges that the early people faced when they crossed the vast sea. They will also suggest possible solutions for the problems. ANCIENT MIGRATIONS IN SOUTHEAST ASIA Out of Africa Model Mainland Origin Hypothesis Island Origin Hypothesis Out of Africa Theory Out of Africa Theory A hypothesis stating that the first humans originated in Africa and started to migrate to different parts of the world, hundreds of years ago. Sundaland Sunda Shelf is a continental shelf of the larger landmass (geological region) in the Southeast Asia called Sundaland. Peopling of Southeast Asia Hoabinhian Austroasiatic Kra-Dai Austronesian Mainland Origin Hypothesis (Out of Taiwan Theory) Austronesians originated in Taiwan and migrated to Philippines and Indonesia until they reached the island groups of Polynesia, Micronesia, and Melanesia. Peter Bellwood Austronesians Refers to a large group of Neolithic people with closely related languages believed to have traveled across the archipelagos of Southeast Asia. Austronesians Considered to be the ancestors of most ethnolinguistic groups of the Philippines and insular parts of Southeast Asia. Out of Taiwan Theory Austronesian groups brought with them: Language Cultural characteristics Maritime culture Agriculture Fishing Trading Out of Taiwan Theory Cultural characteristics- tattooing, belief in afterlife, use of burial jars, cultivation of plants, animal husbandry, jade carving, and dwelling in stilt houses near the seashore. Maritime culture- crafting seafaring vessels, navigating through islands. Out of Taiwan Theory Historical Seafaring -began approximately 5,000 years ago (4000-25000 BCE) that led to population growth in the archipelago. Island Origin Hypothesis (Nusantao Network) Nusa - island Nusantao - indigenous ancient people of Southeast asia. Nusantao Maritime Trading and Communication Network - explains how Austronesians and Austronesian languages spread in Asia Pacific. Wilhelm Solheim II This theory aims to explain that the spread of people must also consider their cultural traits. Nusantao developed a maritime trading and communication network throughout the Philippine islands. The people in Southeast Asia already had trade routes and systems. They facilitated the trade and spread of culture. The maritime network provides an explanation for the spread of Austronesia to Southeast Asia via the trading network. Legacy of Austronesia
