# Bystanders to Cyber Bullying ## Cross the Line - **Stand in the back of the classroom.** - **If a statement applies to you, "Cross the line" by moving to the front of the room.** - **Return to the back after each statement.** ### Statements: - You have more than one email address. - You have some kind of cellphone. - You have a cellphone at school? - You use a social media or networking site. - You play online multiplayer games. - You text more than seven friends in one day. - You prefer texting to calling. ### Discussion: - What did you notice about the tech habits or preferences in your class? ## Bullying ### What is Bullying: - Bullying is when someone keeps being mean to someone else on purpose. - Usually repeated over time. - Occurs when there is an imbalance of power. ### What is an Imbalance of Power? - **Physical strength** - **Popularity** - **Access to embarrassing information** - **Cognitive abilities** ### Activity: - Let's decide... **who has more perceived power?** - Based on only the information given, which student has more perceived power? - Walk to the left side of the room for choice one and the right side for choice two. ### Scenarios: - **Choice 1:** Jimmy is already 5'10 in 7th grade, plays on the football team and benches 150 pounds. - **Choice 2:** Jason has yet to hit a growth spurt and is 5'1. He just started weightlifting, benching 60 pounds. - **Choice 1:** Sophie is on the dance team and has a lot of friends. She is always in a large group. - **Choice 2:** Candance goes straight to class in the morning, she talks to a few kids but not often. - **Choice 1:** Joey and Karl used to be best friends. Karl shared a lot of personal information with Joey when they were friends. Joey has new friends and Karl is worried he is going to tell everyone what Karl shared. - **Choice 2:** Karla has 500 followers on her new Tik Tok account. Kids are always talking about how cool her videos are. - **Choice 2:** Maddi is new to Tik Tok, only 60 followers. She posted a silly video and Karla commented "fr...what is this?" ## What is Bullying? - **Can you name some behaviors that can be considered bullying?** ## Types of Bullying | Type | Examples | |---|---| | Verbal | Teasing, name calling, inappropriate sexual, racial or ethnic comments, threatening to cause harm | | Social | Leaving someone out on purpose, telling others not to be friends with someone, spreading rumors, embarrassing someone in public | | Physical | Hitting, kicking or punching, spitting, tripping or pushing, making mean or rude hand gestures| ## Cyber Bullying - Technology can be fun and entertaining. However, sometimes these things can be done to do mean, hurtful things. - What are some ways cyber bullying can be different from other bullying? ## Bystander Responsibility - **Just like other types of bullying, bystanders can be part of the cyber bullying problem.** ### What is a Bystander? - Someone who is present at an event or incident but doesn't take part ### What is an Upstander? - A person who speaks or acts in support of an individual or cause, particularly someone who intervenes on behalf of a person being attacked or bullied. ### How can bystanders become part of the bullying problem? ### How can you be a support to someone who is being bullied? ## What do I do? - **Recognize** when you see bullying happening. - **Report** bullying to a trusted adult. - **Refuse** to walk away or be assertive and tell the person to "Stop!" ## Left, Middle, Right - **After the statement is read, move the left, middle or right part of the room depending on your answer.** ### Statements: - You check your phone as soon as you wake up. - Left: Most of the time - Middle: Sometimes - Right: Not often - You stick up for others during online chats or comments. - Left: Most of the time - Middle: Sometimes - Right: Not often - Your phone stays in your room at night. - Left: Most of the time - Middle: Sometimes - Right: Not often - When a notification goes off, you check it right away. - Left: Most of the time - Middle: Sometimes - Right: Not often - You type how you talk to others face to face. - Left: Most of the time - Middle: Sometimes - Right: Not often - You have nothing to hide on your phone - Left: Most of the time - Middle: Sometimes - Right: Not often - You could read your last 5 text messages out loud, in class, and they would be school appropriate. - Left: Most of the time - Middle: Sometimes - Right: Not often - Your social media friends are people you know in real life. - Left: Most of the time - Middle: Sometimes - Right: Not often ## Take a Look... - **Erika shows you texts from Toni**. - You want to do the right thing.
