Latex) Alternative energy resources Environmental sensors ❖ Sustainable utilization and conservation of plants Masticatories & Fumitories ❖Substances smoke or chew for pleasure addiction => serious social, physiological effects ❖Masticatories: substances chew ❖Fumitories: substances smoke ❖Many contains various alkaloids Majority have a stimulating or narcotic effect Tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) ❖Dried Leaves – Nicotine ❖Both as a fumitory and masticatory ❖Medicinal Toothache, indigestion, blood poisoning Betal (Piper betel) ❖ Chewed with Endosperm of areca nut Tobacco Lime Betel – pungent taste due to a volatile oil Areca nut – several alkaloids and tannings Cannabis sativa ❖Hashish – dried resinous exudate from female inflorescence ❖Marjuana – young flowering shoots ❖Ganja – dried female inflorescences ❖Excessive use is harmful Coca Erythroxylon coca & Erythroxylum novogranatense ❖Alkaloid – Cocaine ❖Extracted from leaves ❖Used as an anesthetic and a stimulant ❖Highly addictive ❖Leads to long term health problems (stomach ulcers, severe depression, brain functionality, bleeding in the lungs) Poppy (Papaver somniferum) ❖ Opium Harden latex exudate from capsule ❖ A narcotic ❖ Contains around 25 alkaloids ❖ Morphine and Codeine ❖ Addiction –loose appetite, body weight, will power, finally death In this session, we have learnt ❖ Traditional uses and potentials - Masticatories and Fumitories In next session, we will learn about ❖ Traditional uses and potentials as - Natural Products and Processing
