It is a method that enhances lashes by attaching synthetic fibers to each individual lash. Customizable, painless, and weightless, they offer a convenient alternative to daily mascara and curling routines. NATURAL LASHES Eyelashes serve to protect the eyes from debris, dust, and small particles. Growing in three layers on the edge of the eyelids, the upper eyelids typically have 90 to 200 lashes, while the lower eyelids have around 70 to 100. On average, one to five lashes may fall out daily. The growth cycle of an eyelash spans about two to three months. GROWTH CYCLE There are three phases in a full lash growth cycle: 1. The Anagen phase, active growth period 2. The Catagen phase, transitional period 3. The Telogen phase, resting period At any given time, 90% of your lashes are in the active growth stage where they grow about.16 mm a day. Essentially, if you cut your lashes they will grow back but it could take up to five months. enjoy the process LASH EXTENSION TYPES Classic lashes involve a 1:1 ratio of extensions to natural lashes, creating a dark lash line and the illusion of thick, dark eyelashes. This style has a shorter lifespan and requires more frequent fills. Volume lashes are customized fans of two or more fine extensions applied to one natural lash, creating a dark lash line with a fluffy appearance. They have a longer lifespan, requiring fills less Wet lashes are a volume lashes but the frequently, but it's recommended not to unfanned version exceed 4 weeks of wear. Hybrid lashes are an even combination of both classic and volume extensions. This is perfect for a strip lash imitation. The Hybrid technique is a combination of two different lash application techniques rolled into one set of lashes. For example; individual classic Extend, one false lash extension on one isolated natural lash combined with Russian Volume, multiple lash extensions on one natural lash. This type of lash technique gives lash techs the freedom to be creative and develop their lash application skills. This is achieved by adding long lengths of classic lashes that are strategically placed to create a frame and filled in between with the volume extensions to give a spiky textured look. Properly maintained eyelash extensions typically last up to three weeks, but their longevity can be influenced by factors like application technique, adhesive type, and home care. Most semi-permanent eyelash extensions are made from synthetic PBT (Polybutylene Terephthalate) or polyester resin, a versatile plastic-like material used in various manufacturing applications, not just for lash extensions. Application: These fans are applied similarly to classic lashes, designed to save time and simplify the process without requiring advanced skills. Ease of Use: Ideal for beginner lash artists transitioning from classic to volume lashes. Production Process: 1. Thin PBT threads are arranged on a lash tray. Pro-Made Fans - Pro-made fans are crafted with the perfect amount of adhesive, ensuring they are not too heavy or damaging to natural lashes. Created using the artist’s preferred method and dipped in adhesive, these fans are rapidly cured and stored for later use. Advantages of Pro-Made Fans: Custom Crafting: Allows for precise control over the amount of adhesive, reducing the risk of lash trauma. Flexibility: Enables artists to create custom fans that suit each client’s natural lashes and desired look. Choosing the Right Fan Type: Beginners: Pre-made fans are a great tool for those new to volume lashing, offering a simpler and quicker way to achieve fuller looks. Intermediate and Advanced: Pre-made fans help save time and increase efficiency, allowing for higher client turnover and greater earnings potential. Pro-Made Fans: Ideal for ensuring the health of natural lashes while offering customized and intricate lash designs. Cluster lashes are little sections of a strip lash or a group of lashes that are glued together in a cluster with a thick base. These can give you more of a natural look compared to strip lashes but are still very heavy to the eyes. These also should not be worn for more than a day and should not be slept in. If you happen to get a client with cluster lashes applied remove them immediately. Allow them to soak for longer and use tweezers to assist in removing the applied lashes. FROM DECONTAMINATION TO CLIENT COMFORT LASH SANITATION 1. Hand Washing: Between each client, wash hands thoroughly using warm water and soap. The washing duration should be a minimum of 30 seconds to ensure proper cleanliness. 2. Use of Hand Sanitizer: Keep hand sanitizer readily available at your workstation. During the service, use at least a dime-sized amount, rubbing it over both hands for 30 seconds. This duration is necessary for the sanitizer to be effective. Adhering to these hand hygiene practices is crucial in preventing the spread of germs and maintaining a safe and hygienic environment for clients. CLIENT SANITATION 1. Hair Management: Ensure the client's hair is kept away from the work area. Use a towel, headband, or hair net to cover the client's forehead, minimizing skin-to-skin contact. 2. Work Area Setup: Place a towel over the area where the client will lie down. Cover the surface completely and add an extra blanket for the client's comfort. 3. Bed Covering Hygiene: After each client, bed coverings must be replaced. For cloth coverings, change them completely. If using plastic or vinyl coverings, clean them thoroughly with disinfectant and allow sufficient drying time. These steps are essential to maintain hygiene, ensure client comfort, and prevent cross-contamination during lash extension services. ASEPTIC PROCEDURES IN SALONS AND SPAS An aseptic procedure ensures that sterilized and disinfected equipment and supplies remain uncontaminated by microorganisms before use on a client. Following these procedures is crucial to prevent infections and ensure client safety. Example of an Aseptic Procedure 1. Set Up for the Service: Wash hands using proper sanitizing methods. Lay out all implements (cotton, swabs, sponges, etc.) on a clean towel. Cover with another clean towel to prevent airborne contamination. Prearrange utensils to avoid opening containers during treatment, reducing cross- contamination risks. Do not touch any object during treatment without spatulas or tongs. Discard, disinfect, or autoclave any touched object. 2. Client-Specific Preparations: Use clean towels, sheets, headbands or plastic caps, and gowns for each client. Wash and sanitize hands after touching a client’s hair. Wear gloves at the beginning of every treatment, especially during extractions, waxing, or electrolysis. Use pumps, squeeze bottles, or disinfected spatulas to remove creams and products. Place them in small disposable cups before treatment. 3. Post-Treatment Cleanup: Place linens in a covered laundry receptacle. Discard disposable items in a closed trash container and sharps in a sharps box. Disinfect or sterilize all items to be reused. Discard any unused product removed from its container. Wipe down all surfaces touched during treatment with disinfectant before the next client. SAFEGUARDING LASH HEALTH Lash Mites and Eye Health Demodex Mites: These tiny mites inhabit all eyelashes and play a crucial role in maintaining eye health by removing dirt and debris and cleaning lash follicles. Overpopulation Issues: If lashes are not regularly cleaned, mite populations can grow excessively, leading to harmful bacteria growth and blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelids). Potential Problems: Clogged lash follicles can result in painful styes, infections, or more severe complications. Risks of Lash Extensions Trauma and Infection: Lash extension applications can cause trauma to the eye or infections in the eyelid or cornea if not done correctly. Hygiene Importance: Proper sterilization and application methods are essential to avoid infections from inadequate shop hygiene or application damage. Gel Patches and Tape Sensitivity: Gel patches used for lower lash application may contain ingredients like collagen, aloe, and hyaluronic acid, possibly irritating, especially for those with sensitive skin. Even medical-grade tape, sometimes preferred, can lead to allergic reactions due to its adhesive. Safe Application Practices Tweezer Handling: Always be aware of tweezer locations during application. Ensure sharp ends face away from the client. Glue Management: Prevent glue mishaps by being mindful of placement, avoiding overfilling glue holders, and keeping glue remover on hand for emergencies. Client Safety: If glue gets into a client's eye, refer them to urgent care immediately. CONSIDERATIONS & CONTRAINDICATIONS Although everyone may love lashes, there are some individuals out there who SHOULD NOT receive eyelash extensions. Eyelash extensions should not be applied if any of the following conditions are met: A recent eye/nose surgery (within 2 weeks) Permanent makeup in the eye area applied within 72 hours, such as Micro- blading Allergic reaction – Recommend If eyes are swollen, red, itchy, or have immediate removal any other signs of abnormal condition. If there are any signs of eye infection, for example, a style, conjunctivitis, or blepharitis. Product Choices for Extension Maintenance: Avoid oil-based eye products, cream-based eyeliners, and waterproof mascaras, as they can be challenging to remove and may cause complications. Additionally, never use cotton pads or swabs that can snag extensions, potentially pulling them out. These considerations highlight potential risks associated with eyelash extensions and emphasize the importance of informed choices and proper care. Cornea Burn – Goes away within 48 hours, comes from gel pad and tape being over the waterline and touching the eye Glue Ingredients and Allergic Reactions Formaldehyde: Some glues have historically contained formaldehyde, which can trigger severe allergic reactions, including pain, itching, redness, swelling, and vision interference. FDA Regulation: Currently, eyelash extensions and glue are not regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Client Advisories Natural Lash Damage: Inform clients that rubbing, tugging, or pulling extensions can fracture natural lashes and potentially cause permanent damage to the follicle. Rare Complications: Extensions might cause fibers to get stuck under eye tissue, possibly requiring surgical removal. Patch Testing and Allergic Reactions Patch Testing Method: To determine if a client can tolerate extensions, apply a few short lashes (9mm or shorter) to the corner of their lash line and wait 24 hours. Potential Reactions: Even if no reaction occurs during the patch test, a full set application could still cause an allergic reaction due to increased glue exposure. Although everyone may love lashes, there are some individuals out there who should not receive eyelash extensions. Eyelash extensions should not be applied if the any of the following conditions are met: A recent eye/nose surgery (within 2 weeks) Permanent makeup in the eye area applied within 72 hours, such as Micro blading If eyes are swollen, red, itchy or have any other signs of abnormal condition. If there are any signs of eye infection, for example a stye, conjunctivitis or blepharitis. PRINCIPLES OF PREVENTION IN INFECTION CONTROL The principles of prevention play a crucial role in developing a practical plan for infection control and decontamination in various environments, including salons and spas. There are three levels of decontamination: sanitation, disinfection, and sterilization. SANITATION Definition: Sanitation aims to significantly reduce the number of pathogens or disease- producing organisms found on a surface. Methods: Sanitation involves using ultraviolet (UV) sanitizers, antiseptics, soaps, and detergents to clean and sanitize tools, implements, and surfaces. Importance: Sanitation is essential in maintaining a clean and safe environment in salons and spas to minimize the risk of infections. DISINFECTION Definition: Disinfection is the second level of decontamination that kills most microorganisms on hard, nonporous surfaces, including bacteria and some viruses. Methods: Disinfectants are chemical agents and hospital-grade products that must be used carefully according to manufacturer instructions. Importance: Disinfection is crucial in preventing the spread of infections and ensuring a hygienic environment for clients and practitioners. Use of Disinfectants: Disinfectants used in salons must be bactericidal, fungicidal, and virucidal to effectively kill potentially infectious bacteria, fungi, and viruses. Failure to follow sanitary guidelines can lead to legal responsibility for any harm caused to clients. CHOOSING AND USING DISINFECTANTS IN SALONS AND SPAS Importance of Proper Disinfectant Use Reading Instructions: Follow manufacturer’s guidelines carefully. Efficacy Requirements: Ensure disinfectants are effective against bacteria, fungi, and viruses. For hospital use, they must also be pseudomonacidal, bactericidal, fungicidal, and virucidal. OSHA Compliance: Use EPA- registered tuberculocidal disinfectants for implements that contact blood or body fluids. Types of Disinfectants Disinfectant Safety 1. Discard Contaminated Objects: Double-bag disposable items and use biohazard stickers for contaminated waste. Place sharps in a sharps box. 7. Disinfect Tools and Implements: Clean and immerse them in an EPA-registered, hospital-grade disinfectant solution. 8. Remove Gloves and Wash Hands: Wash hands with soap and warm water before resuming service. INFECTION CONTROL INFECTION CONTROL Classification of Microorganisms: There are four classifications of potentially infectious microorganisms: bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites. Infection control measures aim to prevent infections or diseases rather than treat them. DEFINITIONS RELATED TO DISEASE CAUSATION Bacteria: One-celled microorganisms with plant and animal characteristics, some of which are harmful. Bacteria are microscopic and can exist almost everywhere. Pathogenic vs. Nonpathogenic Bacteria: Bacteria are grouped into pathogenic (harmful) and nonpathogenic (harmless) types. Nonpathogenic bacteria are beneficial and perform various functions in the body, while pathogenic bacteria can cause disease or infection. CLASSIFICATIONS OF PATHOGENIC BACTERIA Cocci: Round-shaped bacteria that can appear singly or in groups like staphylococci (clusters) and streptococci (curved lines). They cause infections such as abscesses and strep throat. Bacilli: Short, rod-shaped bacteria that are common and cause diseases like tetanus and tuberculosis. Spirilla: Spiral or corkscrew-shaped bacteria subdivided into groups like Treponema pallidum (causes syphilis) and Borrelia burgdorferi (causes Lyme disease). MOVEMENT OF BACTERI A CLASSIFICATIONS OF PATHOGENIC BACTERIA Cocci: Rarely show active motility and are transmitted through the Cocci: Round-shaped bacteria air, dust, or settling substances. that can appear singly or in Bacilli and Spirilla: Motile groups like staphylococci bacteria that use slender, hairlike (clusters) and streptococci extensions called flagella for (curved lines). BACTERIAL INFECTIONS Infection Agents: Infections occur when body tissues are invaded by disease-causing microorganisms, known as infection agents. Bacterial infections are characterized by the presence of pathogenic bacteria. Signs of Infection: Pus formation is a common sign of bacterial infection, containing white blood cells, dead cell debris, tissue elements, and bacteria. Common Bacteria: Staphylococci are prevalent human bacteria, responsible for various diseases including toxic shock syndrome and food poisoning. Some strains like Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) are resistant to antibiotics and can cause severe skin infections. Transmission: Bacterial infections can spread through skin-to-skin contact, contaminated surfaces, or shared items. Contagious diseases like the common cold, ringworm, and conjunctivitis can be transmitted through various means. Prevention: Proper hygiene practices, including hand washing, disinfection of tools and equipment, and maintaining a clean environment, are crucial to prevent the spread of bacterial infections in salons and spas. UNDERSTANDING AND PREVENTING INFECTIONS VIRAL INFECTIONS Viruses are microscopic organisms that can infect almost all plants and animals, including humans. Common viral infections include the common cold, influenza, herpes, measles, chicken pox, smallpox, hepatitis, polio, and AIDS. Unlike bacteria, viruses can only live by penetrating cells and becoming part of them. Viral infections cannot be treated with antibiotics. HIV AND AIDS HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is the virus that causes AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome). HIV is transmitted through unprotected sexual contact, sharing needles by intravenous drug users, and accidents with needles in healthcare settings. HIV can enter the bloodstream through cuts and sores and can be transmitted in salons by contaminated sharp implements. HIV is not transmitted by casual contact like holding hands, hugging, kissing, sharing food or household items, or sitting on toilet seats. HEPATITIS HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is the virus that causes AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome). TYPES OF HEPATITIS Three types of hepatitis are of concern: hepatitis A, B, and C. Hepatitis B is the most difficult to kill on surfaces, so the disinfectant used must be effective against it BLOODBORNE PATHOGENS AND INFECTION CONTROL Bloodborne Pathogens: Disease-causing microorganisms carried in the body by blood or body fluids, such as hepatitis and HIV, are known as bloodborne pathogens. Transmission Risks: Estheticians face risks of exposure to bloodborne pathogens during procedures like extractions, waxing, and tweezing if proper infection control measures are not followed. Entry Points for Pathogens: Pathogens can enter the body through breaks in the skin, the mouth, nose, eyes, ears, and unprotected sexual contact. Preventive Measures: Universal precautions, including wearing gloves, protective eyewear, and appropriate clothing, are essential to prevent the transmission of bloodborne infections PARASITES, FUNGI, AND IMMUNITY Parasites: Parasites can be internal (endoparasites) or external (ectoparasites) and require a host to survive. They can cause contagious diseases like head lice and scabies. Fungi: Fungi like yeast, molds, and mildew can cause infections like athlete's foot, ringworm, and nail infections. Fungal infections typically affect the skin, nails, and hair. Immunity: Immunity is the body's ability to resist disease and prevent infections. It can be natural or acquired through overcoming a disease or vaccination. A strong immune system is crucial for overall health and disease prevention. IMPORTANCE OF INFECTION CONTROL IN ESTHETICS Infection Control Education: Infection control should be a prominent part of esthetic education to prevent the spread of infections and ensure client and practitioner safety. Bloodborne Pathogen Standards: The OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen Standard aims to minimize the transmission of HIV and hepatitis B infections among healthcare workers through strict infection control practices. Vaccination: Vaccinations for hepatitis B are crucial for those working in medical environments to prevent the spread of infections through blood and body fluids HEPATITIS B VACCINATION Those who work closely with the public can be vaccinated against hepatitis B. It is imperative for those working in a medical environment to receive the hepatitis B vaccine. If declined, a waiver must be signed BLOODBORNE PATHOGENS STANDARD The likelihood of exposure to blood and body fluids increases for estheticians when performing extractions, using microdermabrasion equipment, or working with postoperative patients. The OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard was created to minimize the transmission of HIV and hepatitis B infections among healthcare workers KEY POINTS OF THE STANDARD Use Universal Precautions: Treat all body fluids as infectious and assume all tissue is hazardous. Frequent hand washing and wearing nitrile gloves and appropriate body protection devices during treatments and cleanup are essential. Apply Work Practice Controls: The employer must provide protection devices, cleaning supplies, masks, lap coats/uniforms, eye flush stations, sharps containers, gloves, and appropriate labels for hazardous materials. Maintain a Clean Work Environment: Gloves must be worn during potential exposure to blood or other potentially infected material (OPIM). All linens must be appropriately cleaned and laundered after each client use. Eating or drinking is not allowed in work areas. Hepatitis B Vaccine: Estheticians are considered a Group 1 Classification, meaning they come into contact with body fluids while performing their jobs. It is imperative to have the hepatitis B vaccine. Follow-up After Exposure: The employer must make a documented confidential evaluation, detailing the circumstances, route of exposure, and identification of the person. The exposed area must be immediately washed with soap and water or flushed in case of eye exposure. The employee and client must be screened by qualified medical personnel FREE CERTIFICATIONS Check out these cool certifications to level up your client trust game - and guess what? Isolation Lash Tweezers. Pointed Curve Lash Tweezers. Pointed Edge Lash Tweezers. Curved Lash Tweezers. Volume Lash Tweezers. Round Volume Lash Tweezers. TWEEZER MAINTENANCE Nail file Tweezer cleaner ENHANCING EFFICIENCY AND PREVENTING HAND FATIGUE IN LASH APPLICATION 1. Avoiding Hand Fatigue and Injury: Holding tweezers incorrectly can lead to hand fatigue and even conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome if not corrected. Hold tweezers low in your hand to maintain control. 2. Optimal Grip Technique: Avoid holding tweezers like a pencil, as this puts pressure on the thumbs, leading to twisting and bending when picking up extensions. Instead, use 2-3 fingers to control the tension of the tweezers, ensuring a more stable grip. 3. Preventive Measures: Invest in multiple tweezers of your preferred backup style. There's always a risk of dropping or bending tweezers, and having spares can prevent interruptions during a session. By adopting the right techniques and having spare tweezers, lash technicians can enhance control, minimize the risk of hand fatigue, and ensure a smoother and more efficient application process. LASH PRIMER 1. Preparation for Application - Lash primer is utilized to prepare the natural lash for the extension application process. 2. Dirt and Debris Removal - The liquid formulation of the lash primer is designed to effectively remove dirt and debris from the natural lash. 3. Impact on Retention Time - The use of lash primer not only cleans the natural lash but also influences the retention time frame of the lash extensions. 4. Application Method - Lash primer is applied using a micro swab or lip applicator, ensuring precise and controlled application. Incorporating lash primer into the preparation process enhances the cleanliness of the natural lashes and contributes to the overall success and longevity of eyelash extensions. MASSAGE TABLES MASSAGE TABLES Primary Choice: Widely used VS. RECLINERS due to their suitability for clients lying flat during the eyelash extension application. Enhanced Comfort: Adding a mattress foam topper can significantly increase comfort, considering the lengthy duration of the procedure. RECLINERS Comfortable Alternative: Recliners serve as an excellent option, especially for clients who might find lying flat uncomfortable. Advantages: They provide a more relaxed posture, which can be beneficial for both the client's comfort and the ease of application for the technician. NEBULIZERS Optimal Moisture Control: A nebulizer delivers an ultra-fine mist, providing the precise amount of moisture needed to cure eyelash extension adhesive effectively. This controlled application ensures that the lashes are not overwhelmed with excessive moisture, which can compromise the quality of the application. Efficient Polymerization Process: The nebulizer aids in initiating the polymerization (curing) process of the eyelash adhesive. It ensures that the adhesive sets correctly, leading to a more durable and lasting eyelash extension. Immediate Post-Application Care: Traditional advice often includes waiting for about 24 hours before allowing the extensions to get wet after application. With the use of a nebulizer, this waiting period is eliminated, allowing for immediate exposure to moisture without affecting the quality of the eyelash extensions. DISPOSABLES MASCARA BRUSHES AND MICRO SWABS Purpose of the Mascara Brush: Used to brush and separate lashes during the appointment for a neat and polished look. Caution Against Over-Brushing: Advisable not to over-brush, as it can consume valuable appointment time. Disposable Nature: Mascara brushes are disposable items. If the brush falls to the ground during the appointment, it should be discarded to maintain hygiene. Client Take-Home at the End: As a disposable item, after each appointment, it is recommended to give the mascara brush to the client. If not taken home, the brush would be discarded, emphasizing its single-use nature. Purpose of Micro Swabs: Micro swabs serve as liquid applicators during lash services. They are instrumental in applying controlled amounts of primer, sealant, or liquid lash products. Controlled Application: Micro swabs enable precise and controlled application of various liquids, contributing to the accuracy of the lash service. Applications During Service: Used for applying primer, sealant, or liquid lash help throughout the service. Ensures even distribution and avoids excessive liquid application. Avoiding Excessive Liquid: It is crucial not to have a visible ball of liquid on the micro swab before application. Saturating the cotton tip is sufficient for both eyes. Excessive liquid can lead to poorer retention, emphasizing the importance of moderation. Lip Brushes serve a similar purpose when it comes to applying liquid to lashes. They are mostly used for applying lash remover or performing a quick lash bath on the client's eyes. Most similar to natural lash shape. Great for bottom lashes. B-Curl is best for inner corners and bottoms. Good to add to any set for texture but is less dramatic in style. Very Natural effect. C-Curl is best for lifting the eyes. Creates a brightened wider eye look. Best for smaller-shaped eyes. One of the most popular. Similar to a lash curler lift. It also comes in C+/CC Curl which is best for more dramatic effect than a typical C-Curl D-Curl is best for a dramatic glam look and pulls the eyes open the most. Adds definition. It also comes in D+/DD Curl which is best for adding even more drama than a typical D-Curl F-Curl which is best for those that want an even curlier lash L-Curl which is best for downward-sloping lashes. They also are a good selection if the client has hooded eyelids. Its base is straight and the curl begins halfway through to create a stronger bond. L+Curl which is best for the same as L- Curl but with more of a dramatic curl U-Curl which is best for dramatic sets. It is one of the strongest curls and is best for a doll and open open-eye look. This is most likely to touch the client's eyelid so make sure they are aware of the potential irritation. To avoid this use shorter lengths. TYPES OF LASH INGREDIENTS 1. Mink/Cashmere Lashes have the lightest weights and are the lightest volume lashes. These lashes have an oval base that allows for more surface area to make contact with the natural lash providing a better seal of the extension to the natural lash. Can sometimes be shiny, but also has matte options. 2. Silk Lashes are tapered toward the end of the extension, giving the lash a deep black color and thicker appearance than the faux mink style. Most likely to have a glossy finish but is available in Matte as well. 3. Flat Lashes The cross-section of the extension is flatter or more oval in shape than traditional eyelash extensions. They have a thicker look without any extra weight. It appears wider but doesn’t weigh more than a regular extension. Flat lashes are best for classic style. Flat just refers to the cross-section of the lash fiber, not the curl. They come in all the same curl types as other lashes. 4. Y Lashes Preset in the shape of a Y. The split-tip lash extensions are lashes that have a dual tip at the end of the extension but remain classic at the base. This dual tip adds texture and fluffiness to a classic set of lashes. HYGROMETER Dual Thermometer Mechanism: A psychrometric hygrometer consists of two key components: a wet-bulb thermometer and a dry-bulb thermometer. These thermometers are used in tandem to measure environmental conditions, particularly humidity levels. Wet Bulb Thermometer: The wet-bulb thermometer includes a bulb that is kept moist, typically with a water-soaked cloth or wick wrapped around it. As moisture evaporates from the wet bulb, it absorbs heat, causing the temperature of the wet bulb to drop. Dry Bulb Thermometer: In contrast, the dry-bulb thermometer remains unaffected by moisture. It measures the ambient air temperature. Determining Relative Humidity: Relative humidity is calculated by comparing the temperature readings from both the wet and dry bulbs. The difference in temperature readings is used to determine the humidity level of the environment. Generally, a larger temperature difference indicates lower humidity, as more water evaporates from the wet bulb in drier conditions, cooling it more significantly. In essence, a psychrometric hygrometer operates on the principle of evaporative cooling, with the wet bulb providing a temperature reading influenced by ambient humidity, and the dry bulb offering a baseline temperature for comparison. This comparison yields a measure of the relative humidity in the surrounding air. THE INTERPLAY OF TEMPERATURE, HUMIDITY, AND GLUE VARIETY 1. Temperature Impact on Lash Adhesive: Room temperature significantly influences the behavior of lash extension glue. As lash adhesive is a liquid, its viscosity alters with temperature changes. Low Temperatures: Cold temperatures make the adhesive more solid, lowering its viscosity. This means it becomes harder and takes longer to dry. High Temperatures: Warm temperatures cause the adhesive to liquefy, increasing its viscosity. Consequently, it dries faster than usual. 2. Humidity and Cyanoacrylate: Lash extension glue is primarily composed of Cyanoacrylate (80%), which cures in the presence of moisture. Even minimal moisture, like air humidity, triggers this process. Cyanoacrylate's Reaction to Moisture: According to Wikipedia, Cyanoacrylate is an acrylic resin that rapidly polymerizes in the presence of water, especially hydroxide ions. This reaction forms long, strong chains, effectively bonding surfaces. Effect of Humidity: Normal air humidity levels cause the glue to start forming a thin skin within seconds, slowing down the reaction. For optimal bonding, cyanoacrylate must be applied thinly, ensuring a rapid and strong adhesion within a reasonable timeframe. Understanding and regulating both temperature and humidity levels are crucial for achieving the desired consistency and drying time of lash adhesive, thereby ensuring effective and lasting eyelash extension applications. Proper Management of Lash Extension Glue Post-Opening 1. Ethyl Glue Properties: Fast curing, strong strength, may have strong fumes. Suitability: Suitable for clients who prefer a quicker application. 2. Ethoxyethyl Glue Properties: Slow curing, no fumes, ideal for sensitive clients. Suitability: Recommended for clients with sensitivity concerns. 3. Butyl Glue Properties: Weak fumes, slower curing rate. Suitability: Offers a balance, suitable for various clients. FORMULATION COMPONENTS Main Ingredients: Each type contains Cyanoacrylate as the main ingredient. Additional Components: Carefully formulated with a balance of thickener, pigment stabilizer, and accelerator. EXPIRATION AND USAGE Unopened: Standard expiration is 3-6 months. Opened: Once opened, it is recommended to use within 1 month. Usage Estimate: A 10ml lash glue bottle can typically yield around 200 classic sets, while a 5ml bottle is estimated for approximately 100 sets. STORAGE CONSIDERATIONS Deterioration: Glue begins to deteriorate, harden, and dry from the moment it is bottled due to exposure to air. Gas Release: Eyelash extension glue releases a certain type of gas during formulation, and an airtight bottle may lead to expansion and potential explosion. Storage Requirement: To prevent deterioration, it's crucial to store lash extension glue in an air-flowing bottle. Varieties of Eyelash Extension Glue and Handling Guidelines: 1. Rapid Quality Deterioration: Once opened and exposed to air, lash extension glue loses quality at an accelerated rate. The sensitive adhesive may deteriorate even more quickly than regular types. 2. One-Month Expiration: Generally, expect the glue to expire approximately one month after opening. This timeframe can vary, especially for sensitive adhesives. 3. Tracking the Open Date: It's crucial to keep track of the date when the glue is first opened. Use a Sharpie or a similar permanent marker to write the opened date on the back of the package. This practice ensures accurate monitoring of the glue's shelf life and helps in maintaining the quality of service. By meticulously tracking and managing the usage period of lash extension glues, technicians can ensure they are always applying the best quality product, thereby enhancing the safety and satisfaction of their clients. 1. Write down the purchase date, open date, and name of the glue. 2. Keep out of direct sunlight and keep it cool and dark room. 3. Please keep silica gel inside the bag with glues. 4. Unless your room temperature is below -50°C or above 60°C, we don't recommend storing the glue in a refrigerator. If you must keep the glue in a fridge, take the glue out for at least 2-3 hours before use. 5. You may keep the glue in a refrigerator if the glue is unopened and if your refrigerator has a constant temperature. (Otherwise, it gets frozen-defrost and affects the quality) 6. Do not keep your glue in a freezer. When the glue shows a change in consistency, performance, or separation of ingredients, it is time for you to open a new lash adhesive. TAPING BACK TECHNIQUE FOR EYELID CLASSIC LASH TECHNIQUE WET LASH TECHNIQUE SPIKES VS WET SET LOOK CAPPING AND STACKING LASHES: A DETAILED GUIDE Capping and stacking are advanced techniques for placing multiple lash extensions on one natural lash to create a fuller, more voluminous look. Here's how to do it effectively: 1. Capping - Capping involves adding lash extensions that are longer or shorter than the original extension. Technique: Apply longer extensions from underneath the natural lash. Apply shorter extensions on top of the natural lash. This can be done one lash at a time or by applying multiple lashes, such as 2 longer and 2 shorter extensions. Usage in Fills: During lash fills, use capping to retain as many existing lashes as possible. Add a few.07 lashes, keeping track of how many extensions are already on the lash. Always use fewer and shorter extensions than the existing ones to avoid overloading the natural lash. Important Note: Never overburden the natural lash. For instance, stacking two.15 diameter lashes is too heavy and should be avoided. 2. Stacking -Stacking involves adding lash extensions that are usually the same length as the original extension. Strong natural lashes can hold up to 6 extensions. When you dip the lashes in adhesive, it creates a magnetic effect, helping to keep all the extensions together. Example: If you have 3.07 11mm C curl lashes, you can stack another 3.07 lashes of the same length and curl. For variety, you can change the curl (e.g., from C to D) or the length (e.g., shorter to 9-10mm) to create a fuller lash line. General Tips: Balance and Weight: Always ensure the natural lash is not overburdened by the weight of the extensions. Adhesive Use: Proper adhesive use is crucial. It helps in maintaining the integrity of the fan or stack. Creativity: Feel free to experiment with different curls and lengths to achieve the desired fullness and style. CREATING THE PERFECT LASH FANS PINCH TECHNIQUE 1. Pull Lashes off the Strip Positioning Tweezers: Place your tweezers on the top and bottom of the lashes, right above the sticky strip. Determining Fan Size: Decide on the size of your fan based on the client's desired look and the natural lash. More lashes create a denser, larger fan, while fewer lashes make a smaller fan. Removing Lashes: Pull the chunk of lashes off the sticky strip by moving towards you and upwards. Quality Matters: The quality of both the lashes and tweezers affects the ease of pulling lashes and the quality of the fan. 2. Pinch the Base of the Lashes Hand Positioning: Point the tips of your thumb and index fingers towards your chest, perpendicular to you. This is the optimal way to pinch the base of the fan. Pinching Technique: As you pinch the base of the lashes, slightly release pressure on the tweezers to allow movement. Maintaining Control: Pressing the tip of the tweezer into your thumb helps maintain control of the lashes, even when pressure is released. This also helps direct the lashes as needed. Your fingers should just act as a 'holder' for the base of the lashes, and use your tweezers to pump and shimmy the lashes to fan them out! This way the ends are straight, therefore the fan is straight, and you can wrap the fan. 3. Dip the Fan into the Adhesive Adhesive Application: Once you have formed the base of the fan, dip it lightly into the adhesive. Finding the Sweet Spot: Use just the right amount of adhesive. Too much can weigh down natural lashes and cause clumping or poor isolation, while too little will lead to poor retention. Attachment: Glue the fan onto the client's natural lash. 4. Repeat Using Tweezers Follow the same steps as above, but use your tweezers to pinch instead of your fingers for an alternative method. STANDARD FANS CREATE BOTH COVERAGE AND DENSITY STANDARD FANS ARE THE IDEAL FANS FOR MOST CLIENTS! NARROW FANS CREATE A DENSE, DARK LASH LINE EFFECT THEY ARE NOT IDEAL FOR CLIENTS WITH A SPARSE LASH LINE OR CLIENTS WITH GAPS IN THEIR LASH LINE. Creating the Bridge Attachment Process: Attach 3 extensions of 0.07mm or 0.10mm (based on the natural lash strength) to the base only of the donor lashes on either side of the gap. Arrange these extensions in a “flare” or “fan” to create the illusion of fullness. BOTTOM LASHES Bottom lashes are typically thinner and shorter than upper lashes, so their extensions should reflect this. Adding lower lash extensions can enhance the eyes' appearance without looking fake. The process is quicker and requires fewer lashes than upper extensions, but they have a shorter lifespan. 1. Preparing the Client: Complete Top Lashes First: Finish applying the full set of top lashes. Taping Top Lashes: Tape the client's top lashes above the eyelid and cover the top extensions with a gel pad. Use tape or your finger to secure the gel pad. 2. Exposing Bottom Lashes: Positioning Gel Pad and Tape: Apply tape on the cheekbone and pull down to expose the bottom lashes. Use an additional eye pad or tape underneath the bottom lashes to hold them in place for application. 3. Applying Bottom Lash Extensions: Correct Direction: Ensure the extensions are applied in the correct direction. Flip your lash pallet upside down to pull the lashes from the opposite direction, ensuring the curl faces away from you. Glue Application: Use minimal glue and apply it to the top layer of bottom lashes. Thickness and Length: Classic Lower Lash Set: Use a thickness of 0.10 - 0.15mm, depending on the client’s natural lashes. Volume Lower Lash Set: Apply multiple 0.07mm lashes to each bottom lash. Best Length: Use extensions between 5-8mm. 4. Duration and Maintenance: Application Time: Bottom lashes take about half an hour to apply. Lifespan: Bottom lash extensions last up to 2 weeks (14 days). Due to their shorter lifespan, some lash artists opt to re-apply new lashes rather than perform fills. SEALING BOTTOM LASHES 1. UNDERSTANDING AND ADAPTING TO INDIVIDUAL LASH CHARACTERISTICS 1. Understanding Lash Diversity: Every individual has unique lash characteristics, including variations in curliness, straightness, length, and thickness. Previously damaged lashes may be short and thin, requiring special attention. 2. Placement for Longevity: The placement of lash extensions significantly impacts their longevity. 3. Considerations for Different Lash Types: Straight Lashes (Growing Downward): Placement on the bottom lifts the lash, preventing longer natural lashes from poking through when placed on top. Curly Lashes: Attach the extension to the side to control the direction of the fan, working with the natural curl. Upward and Straight Lashes: Placement on the side or bottom is suitable. Thin and Curved Lashes: Place the extension in the opposite direction of the curve. Be cautious with lash weight due to fragility. 4. With the other hand, gently peel off the overgrown extension using a second pair of tweezers. 3. Important Note Caution: Only use this method when the lash extension has visibly lifted from the base, indicating it is ready for removal. Avoid Pulling Secure Extensions: Never attempt to pull at a securely attached extension to prevent potential damage to the client's natural lash. 4. Alternative for Significant Removal Cream or Gel Remover: If removing more than 30% of lash extensions, consider using a cream or gel remover for a faster and less damaging process. Post-Removal Care: Perform a lash bath afterward to thoroughly remove any product residue. By following this method, lash technicians can ensure a careful and efficient process for removing overgrown lash extensions during refill appointments, prioritizing the health and integrity of the client's natural lashes. 1. Application: Apply the gel bond remover carefully to the lash extensions, ensuring minimal contact with the skin or eyes. 4. General Procedure Gentle Removal: All formulas (gel, liquid, cream) are designed to gently detach lash extensions from natural lashes. Application Technique: Apply the chosen remover carefully, following the specific instructions for the product type. Safety Precautions: Avoid direct contact with the client's eyes and skin to prevent irritation. 5. Post-Removal Care Lash Bath: After removal, it’s advisable to perform a double lash bath to cleanse the area and remove any residue of the remover product. 6. Client Comfort and Safety Choosing the Right Product: Consider the client’s comfort, sensitivity, and the condition of their natural lashes when selecting a remover. Professional Application: Ensure that the removal process is performed by a trained professional to maintain the integrity and health of the natural lashes. MASTERING THE PERFECT LASH EXTENSION FILL Understanding Fill Appointments 1.Time Required: Fill appointments take 50-75% of the time needed for a full set. 2. Retention Guideline: Approximately 40% of the original lash extensions should still be intact. 3. Client Education: Explain the difference between a full set and a fill to clients. 4. Monitor Initial Sets: Track when a fill will likely be needed to set clear expectations for return appointments. 5. Evaluate Lash Condition: If lashes fall below the guideline upon return, discuss aftercare practices with clients. 6. Client Responsibility: Emphasize the importance of proper maintenance by clients. Preparation Steps 1. Setup: Ensure lash setup is complete, disinfect the area, and wash hands. 2. Client Positioning: Position the client's head level with your upper chest to avoid overextending. 3. Cleanliness Check: Inspect eyelids for dirt or makeup, perform a lash bath if necessary, and check for conditions like blepharitis. 4. Bottom Lash Seperation:: Use tape, gel pads, or both to hold bottom lashes down without touching the cornea. Application Process 5. Dealing with Watering Eyes: Continue application and fan dry to comfort the client if eyes water. 6. Priming Lashes: Apply a drop of primer to the lash line using a microfiber brush, fan dry, and use a mascara brush to straighten lashes. 7. Lash Tray Preparation: Prep lash tray, determine lengths, and add lashing assist liquid if needed. 8. Glue Preparation: Mix glue for 1-2 minutes by hand or 1 minute with an automatic shaker, then dispense into a glue ring or jade stone. APPLICATION PROCESS 1. Make sure your lash setup is complete. Disinfect the area and wash hands before beginning. 2. After the client lays down, ensure their head is far enough back that you are not overextending yourself. Make sure their head is level with your upper chest as well. 3. Inspect each eyelid and ensure there is no dirt or makeup present. If there is, a lash bath will be needed. 4. After ensuring the lash line is clean, select the method of holding the bottom lashes down. There are different options, tape, gel pad, or combine the two apply the gel pad and place the tape on top. Ensure the application is only on the water line and does not touch the cornea. a. This may cause the eye to water, continue with application and fan dry after to make the client more comfortable. 5. Prep the eyelashes for application, take a mascara brush straighten the lashes out, and make sure they are all visible. May need to place tape on top of the eyelids to expose lashes better if you can not see where they meet the skin. This will aid in spreading the lashes and holding the skin taut while their eyes remain closed. 6. Apply primer to the lash line using a microfiber brush. Only a drop is needed for both eyelids, as this product may cause burning or tingling for the client so it is important to not over saturate. Fan dry to expedite the drying process. 7. While the primer is drying prep your lash tray if you haven’t done so already. Determine the lengths that you plan to use and add any lashing assist liquid that is needed. A minimum of 3 lash lengths should be used. 8. Mix your glue for 1-2 minutes by hand or 1 minute using an automatic glue shaker. Dispense glue into, a glue ring or jade stone. 9. Grab both sets of sterilized tweezers, isolation tweezers in the less dominant hand, and your curved/boot tweezers. 10. With the isolation tweezer, Isolate a single lash on the eyelid to determine where the extension will be placed. Remain there. 11. On the other hand, begin by removing a single eyelash extension from the row of lashes towards you. Then dip the lash lightly into the adhesive. The glue should be just enough to coat the lash, but not too much that it forms a bead of glue. That is an indicator that there is too much glue. If this happens, re-dip the glue to remove the excess. Avoid wiping as this may break the bond and release fumes into the air that may irritate the client. 12. Place the glue-coated lash about 1mm above the eyelid directly onto the lash extension. Pay attention to the placement of the extension and try to control the direction of the extensions. This is important for curly lashes, thinner lashes, or lashes that grow downward. Also, consider your glue dry time, some glues take longer than others to dry. Moving too quickly will cause the lash to have a weak bond. 13. Repeat this process following the determined map for the client until you have reached full coverage of all the lashes. You can go one by one or alternate from the middle, inner, and outer lash. Always check for stickies throughout the application to make sure the lashes are not sticking together. 14. Once both eyelids are complete, fan dry for 2-3 minutes. Check with a mirror for stickies and placement. You can also apply lash sealant or a lash bonder if needed and dry for another 2-3 minutes. Finally, seal the lashes completely using the nano-mister. Dry for 2-3 more minutes. Now you can remove their eyepads At this time your lash set is complete. Clients are ready to open their eyes and view the transformation. I like to leave their eyepads on until the end as clients will get giddy and open their eyes early. CLIENT CONSULTATION: KEY QUESTIONS FOR A PERSONALIZED LOOK Discuss with your client the look they are trying to achieve. Ask them specific questions to get a good picture of what look they are trying to achieve and if you can produce what they are looking for. Key questions to discuss are : Do they have photos? While it may be hard to determine specific maps, it provides a realistic expectation for what they are looking for What previous experience do they have with extensions? First-timers can be easily intimidated if they have never had extensions. Short and Natural is best then with experience can build or lesson the style. Do they wear mascara or strip lashes? This will help indicate if a set they’ve selected is a good fit. If they wear makeup normally, then a hybrid volume is best, if they are plain-faced mostly then a classic hybrid is best. Do they prefer natural or dramatic, do they like to go out vs. stay home? What is their lifestyle like? These questions will help you determine the style of lashes that your client is looking for. Use the answers to these questions to determine your lash map and the length that will be used. Document the selection along with the completed consent form to ensure consistency for future fills and to record liability between you and the client. Remember the goal is to ensure they love how they look. Overwhelming a client can mean that is the last time they wear or try extensions ever.
