Study Guide Unit 1, Lessons 5-8 1. What is a covenant? A covenant is a promise made between two parties. 2. Why is it significant that God made covenants with His Old Testament people? Covenants were the primary way in which God related to His people in the Old Testament. 3. Covenants show us that God \_\_[always]\_\_\_ keeps His \_\_\_[promises]\_\_\_. 4. What are the key points to the covenant God made with Adam and Eve? **Although God did not engage with Adam and Eve in terms of formal covenant, human beings are created in God's image; Adam and Eve were to be fruitful, to increase in number, and to fill the Earth and subdue it (bring it under control). God gave them a home in the Garden of Eden and assigned to Adam the task of naming the animals. Adam and Eve were not supposed to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.** 5. What are the key points to the covenant God made with Noah? **God repeated promises he had made to Adam and Eve, but He also gave permission to eat animals. God promised to never again destroy the Earth with a flood.** 6. What are the key points to the covenant God made with Abraham? **God would make Abraham a great nation; all people on Earth would be blessed through him. God would give Abraham many descendants and would give them the land of Canaan. The sign of this covenant was to be circumcision.** 7. What is the New Testament sign that has replaced circumcision as a seal of God's covenant for Christians? (see Acts 22:16, Galatians 3:27, 1Peter 3:21) **Baptism replaced circumcision as a seal of God's covenant for Christians in the New Testament.** 8. What is a patriarch? **A patriarch is the father of a large family.** 9. Who are the patriarchs of the nation of Israel? **Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob** 10. God promised all three of the patriarchs that all people would be blessed through them. How was this promise fulfilled? **This promise was fulfilled through the birth of Jesus Christ.** 11. God promised Abraham many descendants. How was this promise fulfilled in Jacob? **Jacob (later named Israel) had 12 sons, who became the 12 tribes of Israel.** 12. Some covenants are **[conditional]**, requiring that both parties keep the terms, while other are **[unconditional]**, meaning that the more powerful party (God, in this case) pledges to keep his part of the agreement **no matter what.**
