Continental Drift and Plate Tectonics PDF

Summary

This document outlines the theory of continental drift and plate tectonics. It details the historical context, evidence presented by geologists like Wegener and Hess, and the concept of plate movements. The document also explains some of the geological processes including formation of mountain ranges, and explains the mechanism behind the continental drift.

Wegener believed J that the" continents, composed of light ti silic rocks (sial), somehow plowed ~ throu"'h the denser rocks of the ocean's 1 I) floor (Sima), driven by forces related to t the earth {Fig. 7.3). Wegener was drawn to the idea to explain the ancient climates of Alfred Wegener the past. The puzzling questions in his mind were: (i) \Vhy should tropical ferns have grown in London, Paris, Bonn and even in Greenland?, (ii) Why coal belts are found in the cold climatic regions, Pechora basin of the tundra?, and (iii) Why glaciers have covered part of Brazil, Peninsular India, Australia, South Africa, and the Con o basm at the same time? While thinking over the given points, the theory of continental drift grew out of the need of explaining the major vari.nions of climate in the past. The climatic ch,rnges on the e,1rth in the opinion of Wegener, may be explained in two ways: 1.
