# Lecture: Eating Disorders ## Anorexia Nervosa - Restriction of energy intake, leading to low body weight. - Intense fear of gaining weight. - Disturbance in the way in which one's body is shaped. ### Subtypes: - **Restricting**: Not engaged with in last 3 months of binge eating, and weight loss i...

# Lecture: Eating Disorders ## Anorexia Nervosa - Restriction of energy intake, leading to low body weight. - Intense fear of gaining weight. - Disturbance in the way in which one's body is shaped. ### Subtypes: - **Restricting**: Not engaged with in last 3 months of binge eating, and weight loss is happening. - **Binge-eating**: Has engaged in binge eating in last 3 months. - **Purge**: ### Psychological Problems: - Depressed mood, irritability, anger, social withdrawal. - Poor concentration. ### Physical Problems: - Anemia, low body temp, weird hair, osteoporosis, metabolic disturbances, heart failure. ## Epidemiology - Affects **0.5 - 1%** of **women**. - **90%** are women. - Age of onset: **mid-late adolescence** (appetite changes to be socially-focused) - Course: - Chronic, slow recovery. - Frequent, severe, daily challenges. - **20%** remain chronically ill. - **50%** go on to develop bulimia nervosa. **HIGHEST MORTALITY RATE OF ALL PSYCH DISORDERS** ## Bulimia Nervosa - Recurrent episodes of binge eating. - Recurrent inappropriate compensatory behaviors. - At least once every **3 weeks**. - Does not occur during the period of AN. - Body image disturbance. - **1 - 3%** of females have it. - **90%** female. - Onset: Adolescence to early adulthood. - Long-term still better than AN. ## Binge Eating Disorder - Recurrent episodes of binge eating. - At least once a week for **3 months**. - No inappropriate compensatory behavior. - Does not occur exclusively with OB or AN. - Affects **females more**. ### Biological Theories - Inheritability for AN & BN (Typically other psych issues in the family as well) ### Psychological Theories - AN & BN have many theories in common. - Basic self-worth on body. - Intense fear of gaining weight. - Desire to attain unrealistic levels of thinness. ### Psycho-social Causes - Wisher parental criticism. - Lower parental support. - Comments on faulty behavior. - EDS can spread socially - Socio-cultural factors (social media) (Pulivy & Herman, 2002) ## Treatments ### Biological - Medical management. - "Refeeding" - Dietician - Inpatient/outpatient depends on severity. ### Psychological - Cognitive-Behavioral Techniques (Adult) - CBT-E (Fairburn, 2008) 4 stages. - Maudsley Family Based Therapy (Child-adolescent).
