HOFFMAN ESTATES FIRE DEPARTMENT STANDARD OPERATING GUIDELINES SOG Category & Identification Number: EFFECTIVE DATE: Equipment Guidelines – 004 January 1, 2022 NIMS COMPLIANT SOG Title: SCBA and SAR Maintenance and Inspection Revision: 5 APPROVED BY: NUMBER OF PAGES: Re-evaluation Date: AlanWax January 1, 2026 Fire Chief 5 PURPOSE POLICY Defective or nonfunctioning SCBAs or SARs shall be removed from service and shall not be placed back in service until repaired by the SCBA Division. A replacement SCBA unit is to be secured from spare stock whenever possible. Under no circumstances should maintenance or repair operations be attempted unless personnel are trained by the SCBA Division or certified by the manufacturer. Without training or certification, only those operations described in this SOG or the manufacture handouts are to be considered as approved maintenance on SCBA and SAR units. PROCEDURE A. Daily SCBA and SAR Inspection 1. SCBA and SAR units will be inspected for proper operation by the apparatus operator or any firefighter assigned by the Company Officer: a. during the daily apparatus inspection b. whenever a replacement unit is issued c. after each use 2. Inspect the SCBA and SAR units for proper operation according to manufacture specifications and address the following areas: a. Examine the harness, PASS device, and buddy breather hose for excessive wear and damage. (Note: SAR units are not equipped with PASS devices or buddy breather hoses.) Examine the SCBA and SAR unit for function, tightening of connections, along with checking that regulators and warning devices function properly. 1 b. Examine all cylinders for excessive wear and evaluate cylinder pressure. Replace and recharge any high pressure cylinder less than 4000 psi. c. Place the SCBA and SAR unit in operation and test functionality of the bypass valve, cylinder valve, and low pressure alarms. (Note: Only test the cylinder valve on the SAR units.) d. Check to ensure SCBA and the radio bluetooth are paired and functioning correctly. (See References) B. Face piece Inspection and Sanitizing 1. Each day, all on duty personnel are to inspect their face piece according to the manufacturer's specification. If the face piece is found to be not functioning correctly or damaged, the unit is to be removed from service and an appropriate replacement secured. If any face piece is found to be contaminated, the unit is to be cleaned and sanitized according to MSA manufacturer's specifications. 2. All affected face pieces are to be cleaned, sanitized, and inspected after each use. If any face piece is found to be nonfunctioning or damaged, the unit is to be removed from service and an appropriate replacement secured. 3. On the 4th Sunday of each month, all on duty personnel are to inspect, clean and sanitize their face pieces according to manufacturer's specifications. Special attention should be made to checking the condition of the nose cup, face shield, exhalation valve, and head harness straps. If the face piece is found to be nonfunctioning or damaged, the unit is to be removed from service and an appropriate replacement secured. C. Monthly SCBA Inspection On the 4th Sunday Apparatus Maintenance Assignment of each month, all SCBA units are to be inspected according to manufacturer's specifications. Special attention is to be directed in the following areas: 1. Complete the daily inspection process. 2. Check the operation of the low pressure alarm for correct activation pressure. (Note: High pressure units should activate at approximately 1550 psi.) 3. Check that the high pressure line (from the cylinder) "O" ring is present and undamaged. 4. Replace the rechargeable battery in the back plate. 2 D. Monthly SAR Inspection On the 4th Sunday of each month, all SAR units and Very Clear communication units are to be inspected according to manufacturer's specifications. Special attention is to be directed to the following: 1. Complete the daily inspection process. 2. Inspect all hoses (supply hoses from the Tower fill connection and hoses from the SAR regulator). 3. Place the SAR regulator in operation and check for leaks and the activation of the low pressure alarm (within the regulator) at approximately 550 psi. 4. Place the SAR units in operation checking for leaks and adequate air flow from the mask mounted regulator. 5. Inspect, clean, and sanitize all SAR and face pieces according to manufacturer's specifications. E. Additional Information 1. The MSA G1 uses a single battery located in the back plate of the SCBA unit to operate all the electronics on the SCBA unit. The department has determined the action of changing the battery will occur under the following situations: A. On the Sunday the assigned vehicle is to have the Weekly Apparatus Maintenance completed. B. When the control module on the right shoulder strap displays a low battery. 2. The MSA G1 does a self-check every time the unit is turned on. There are occasions that the SCBA unit will alarm and display a RED X on the control module. In the event this happens the following is to be followed: 1. Remove the battery from the back plate. This will reset the SCBA. 2. Complete a department work order on the SCBA indicating the Red X alarm 3. The SCBA should remain in service until the repair can be made by the SCBA Division. EXCEPTIONS REFERENCES 3 Bluetooth Pairing G1 SCBA and Radio INSTRUCTIONS 1) Power on the G1 SCBA 2) Power on the Motorola Radio. Confirm that blue tooth is turned on. It can be turned on/off by pressing the purple button on the side of the radio. 3) Press and hold 1 of the Green buttons until the RFID icon is displayed on the control module. 4) Place the radio specific RFID pairing tag over the RFID target on the SCBA. It is located behind the waist strap on the bell side of the SCBA. **This needs be done before the RFID search times out on control module** Each radio should be paired with the corresponding SCBA (i.e. E21-1 SCBA should be paired with radio E21-1) 5) Press and hold the small button on the lapel mic until the audible indicator occurs. The word "VISIBLE" will initially display on the radio and then disappear. **THE CONNECTION MAY TAKE UP TO 30 SECONDS** 4 6) The indicators that the connection was successful are: - The radio will give you an audible indicator during SCBA power up and while breathing on air. - With the SCBA still on, turn the radio off and then back on. You will hear an audible indicator from the radio and the blue tooth symbol will be bolded (shown below) It will then disconnect, this is normal. 7) The Bluetooth is only in use when breathing from the regulator. The Bluetooth allows you to use the radio without having to move the lapel microphone. THE RADIO RFID TAGS ARE STORED NEAR THE SPARE RADIOS AND BATTERIES AT EACH STATION DEFINITIONS End of Document 5
