How can hip pain be differentiated from lumbar pain by physical examination? Osteoarthritis Osteoarthritis Osteoarthritis is the most common form of hip arthritis. It is often described as the result of wear and tear of this ball-and-socket joint articular cartilage. This degeneration led to loss of joint space, which can potentially be symptomatic, which explains why it is more common in older than younger people. Osteoarthritis of the hip has been associated with : Advancing age Obesity Previous damage or injury to the hip Evaluation Pain in groin/thigh radiating to buttocks or knee aggravated when hip is loaded wrong or too long; cold weather and eased with continuous movement. + Patrick’s or FABER test: flexion, abduction and external rotation of the hip.
