# Birth Control **Vasectomy Teaching** * Performed by making a cut in each side of the scrotum and cutting the vas deferens (tubes through which sperm travel). * Sterility is not immediate because sperm are already present. * Need to use a condom for 3 months until rechecked by a physician * Analgesic for pain may be taken **Will NOT affect ability to achieve an erection** **Fertility Awareness** * Basal body temperature rises after ovulation. * Ovum viable up to 24 hours, sperm viable for 48-72 hours in the fallopian tube. * Most sperm die within 24 hours. * Mucus increases, becomes thin, slippery, clear as ovulation nears, aids sperm passage. * Stretchable mucus (over 6 cm) and egg white consistency. **Oral Contraceptive Contraindications** * Thromboembolic disorders (blood clots) * Cerebrovascular accident (stroke) or heart disease * Estrogen-dependent cancer or breast cancer * Smoking pattern of more than 15 cigarettes/day for women over 35 (pill is safe if they don't smoke). * Impaired liver function * Confirmed or possible pregnancy * Undiagnosed vaginal bleeding **Birth Control Teaching** * Best form of birth control is one used consistently. * If severe leg pain develops with oral contraceptive, discontinue use. * Oral contraceptives do not protect against STIs.
