# UNIT 11 - The Brain **The brain** * Sensations, memory, emotions, decision-making, movement * Brain communicates with the body via the S.C. & 12 pairs of cranial nn. (nerves & neurons) **Main Parts of the brain** * Cerebrum * Diencephalon * Cerebellum * Brainstem (midbrain, Pons, & medulla) **Ventricles** * Four hollow chambers within the brain * 2 lateral ventricles - One within each cerebral hemisphere * Third ventricle - Medial to thalamus * Fourth ventricle - Between Cerebellum & brainstem **Protective coverings of the brain** * Bone, meninges, CSF * Meninges Same as around the spinal cord (dura, arachnoid, & Pia mater) **Meninges** * Between skull & brain * Dura mater - Tough mater; provides support (dural sinuses) * Arachnoid mater - Extensions that Blood Vessels extend through * Empty space (subarachnoid) containing CSF * Pia mater - Thin red layer; delicate & forms the contour of the brain **Protective Coverings of the brain** * Bone, meninges, CSF * Meninges same as around the spinal cord (dura, arachnoid, & Pia mater) * Dural Partitions (falx cerebri, tentorium cerebelli, etc.) extend into fissures, support brain **Dural Partitions** * Separates cerebrum from cerebellum **Cerebrospinal fluid** * Clear, colorless liquid * 80-150 ml - Fills ventricles, surrounds CNS * Protects brain, spinal cord; prevents sloshing of the brain * Transports nutrients & metabolic wastes * Provides stable chemical environment
