Flashcards
What is the brain?
What is the brain?
The main control center of the body, responsible for sensations, memory, emotions, decision-making, and movement. It communicates with the body through the spinal cord and cranial nerves.
What are ventricles in the brain?
What are ventricles in the brain?
Four hollow chambers within the brain filled with cerebrospinal fluid. They include the two lateral ventricles, the third ventricle, and the fourth ventricle.
What are the meninges?
What are the meninges?
Three protective layers surrounding the brain: dura mater, arachnoid mater, and pia mater. They provide support, cushion the brain, and help transport nutrients and waste.

Study Notes
The Brain
- The brain is responsible for sensations, memory, emotions, decision-making, and movement.
- It communicates with the body via the spinal cord and 12 pairs of cranial nerves.
Main Parts of the Brain
- Cerebrum
- Diencephalon
- Cerebellum
- Brainstem (midbrain, pons, and medulla)
Ventricles
- Four hollow chambers within the brain.
- Two lateral ventricles, one in each cerebral hemisphere.
- Third ventricle - located medially to the thalamus.
- Fourth ventricle - located between the cerebellum and brainstem.
Protective Coverings of the Brain
- Bone, meninges, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).
- Meninges are the same as those surrounding the spinal cord (dura mater, arachnoid mater, and pia mater).
- Dura mater: tough outer layer, supporting blood vessels (dural sinuses).
- Arachnoid mater: middle layer with a space filled with CSF, extensions of blood vessels pass through it.
- Pia mater: thin inner layer, contouring the brain.
Dural Partitions
- Partitions (e.g., falx cerebri, tentorium cerebelli) extend into fissures to support and separate brain structures.
Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF)
- Clear, colorless liquid.
- Volume: 80-150 ml.
- Fills ventricles and surrounds the central nervous system (CNS).
- Protects the brain and spinal cord, preventing movement-related damage (sloshing).
- Transports nutrients and removes metabolic waste.
- Maintains a stable chemical environment.
