# Sub-cellular Structures Found in Both Plant and Animal Cells **Cell Membrane:** A semi-permeable membrane that separates the interior of the cell from its external environment. It controls what enters and exits the cell. **Ribosome:** An intercellular structure made of both RNA and protein, ribosomes are the site of protein synthesis within a cell. **Nucleus:** An organelle containing all the chromosomes (which contain DNA). It’s often described as a “noodle ball.” **Mitochondria:** Often called the powerhouse of a cell, mitochondria generate most of the chemical energy needed for the cell’s biochemical reactions (in ATP). They are responsible for aerobic respiration. **Cytoplasm:** A gelatinous liquid that fills the cell and holds all of its components together, protecting them.
