Alliances are agreements between nations to aid and protect one another. Assassination is the murder of a public figure, usually for political reasons. Serbia wanted to be free of Austria-Hungary’s control. Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia July 28th, 1914. A month later many different countries had joined. Soldiers developed trench foot, which is foot rot caused by long periods of time in wet boots. U-boats, which are German submarines, were used in WWI. At first, the United States wanted to remain neutral. The Germans sent the Zimmerman Note, a telegram, to Mexico to try to convince Mexico to declare war on the United States. Armistice Day, the eleventh hour on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, ended the war. The Treaty of Versailles blamed Germany for WWI and handed down harsh punishment.
