April 1940: Germany invaded Norway and Denmark to secure iron supply. May 1940: Germany attacked Holland and Belgium. 1940: Winston Churchill replaced Chamberlain as Prime Minister; British troops retreated from Dunkirk with naval assistance. Operation Sea Lion (1940) Hitler planned to invade Britain; Luftwaffe attempted to destroy British defenses. WW2 Summary 1 Battle of Britain: Britain won, leading to the German bombing campaign known as the Blitz. Operation Barbarossa (June 1941) Hitler invaded the Soviet Union to seize oilfields.
