WINDOWS 10 -- What\'s New?? - iLink Digital **Unit 8 -- Personalization** - Customization Options - Bottom - Colors - Topics - Lock screen - The Start Menu - Screen timeout settings. Most of us tend to personalize our environment, to give it a personal stamp as much as possible. From the family photograph on the office desk to the ornament on the car or the painting in the living room, we always seek to distinguish the environment with something meaningful to us. The same goes for Windows. Working with our computers for extended periods will be more pleasant if they are made up of familiar and enjoyable elements. The Windows operating system has always been customizable in many ways. We can change the background images on the desktop and now on the lock screen. We can also modify the color scheme of windows, menus, and other elements. We can change the icon of one program for another, and so on. However, many users are reluctant to make even the slightest change to their computers for fear of affecting their operation. Given this, it is essential to note that these changes do not affect the system\'s performance, nor can they affect it in any way, so it is possible to make many changes without worrying about the system itself. In this unit, we will see everything we can modify in Windows to make its appearance unique and according to our preferences---precisely, something personal. **Customization options** ![Logo Description automatically generated with medium confidence](media/image2.png) Graphical user interface Description automatically generated **Bottom** ![Graphical user interface Description automatically generated](media/image4.png) Once an image has been selected, we must indicate a type of adjustment. That is, how will it adjust to the screen\'s resolution? If the size of the image matches the resolution of our computer, then some of the adjustment options will not show any effect, as it will look the same if we center the image or indicate that it fills the entire screen. If, on the other hand, the size of the image does not match the screen, what will happen is that certain adjustments can make the image look disproportionate or have black margins around it. Therefore, if you use a personal image as your wallpaper, we suggest that it has proportions close to the resolution of your computer; that way, you will prevent the wallpaper from looking bad. The adjustment options are: A picture containing table Description automatically generated For example, the same image can be viewed in the following ways on the Windows desktop: on the left, we use Fill, and on the right, **Expand**. ![](media/image6.png) A screenshot of a video game Description automatically generated Of course, we should not necessarily use an image for our desktop, no matter how beautiful it may be. We can select a color or even a slideshow of images---a sequence of photos from a folder that changes occasionally. We must use the Background drop-down list to choose a color or a presentation. ![Table Description automatically generated with medium confidence](media/image8.png) When you select **Solid Color**, the window changes to show the available colors. The rest is A picture containing chart Description automatically generated The album where the images that will be part of the presentation are located. We can indicate more than one album. ![Graphical user interface, text, application Description automatically generated](media/image10.png) **Colors** ![](media/image12.png) **Topics** When we select the Themes category of the Settings window, we find a link to the corresponding window of previous versions of Windows, where we can choose any of the themes installed on our computer. The range of themes may vary, including those created by the manufacturer. However, this is not a limitation as you can easily access more themes online. Simply click on \'Get more themes online\' (highlighted in a red box) to be directed to a Microsoft page with a vast selection of downloadable themes across various categories. Graphical user interface, Word, website Description automatically generated Once you\'ve found a theme you like, simply download it and double-click on the file. The theme will install automatically and become your default theme. You can view it in the themes window, where you can easily switch between themes to find the one that suits your style. ![Graphical user interface, diagram Description automatically generated](media/image16.png) For users with multiple monitors, here\'s a fun feature. When you install a theme, each monitor can have a different desktop background, adding a touch of personalization. These backgrounds are also set up as presentations, ensuring a constant variety of images. On the other hand, as we have already seen, the themes window has icons at the bottom to modify the Desktop Background, the base color of the windows, and tiles of the Start menu. When we click on either of the two icons, we redundantly return to the corresponding options in the Settings window, so it is unnecessary to go through it. On the other hand, the other two icons, **Sounds, and Screen Saver** take us to the windows of previous versions. Let\'s look at the one that corresponds to the system sound settings. ![](media/image18.png) As you can see, there is a list of preset combinations of Windows system sounds. If we want our computer to sound different, we can choose a different combination from the list (1). Graphical user interface, text, application Description automatically generated If what we want is to modify only how a particular event sounds or even give sound to an event that does not have it, then we must click on the specific event (window 2), and at the bottom, we can click on the **Browse** button (4) to choose a new sound, which must be in. WAV On the other hand, the screensaver is the animation that appears after the computer has been inactive for a certain amount of time. In old monitors, we leave the same image on a computer for long periods, affecting that monitor\'s image and shortening its life cycle. Therefore, animation was, literally, a screensaver. Now, it\'s just a curiosity that can be skipped. Thus, by default, Windows does not have a screen saver configured. Instead, it is preferable to use a power-saving setting so that the screen turns off after a certain amount of inactivity and even the computer goes to sleep, as we will see later. In any case, if we want to see an animation on the screen after leaving our computer for only a few minutes, we can click on the icon to open the window with the list of installed protectors, select one, and indicate the time it will take to start if the computer is inactive. ![Graphical user interface, application Description automatically generated](media/image20.png) Graphical user interface, application Description automatically generated ![](media/image22.png) **Lock screen** The customization of the lock screen then includes the possibility of changing the image and the list of applications that can offer information on said screen. Graphical user interface, text, application Description automatically generated If the application we want to obtain information about in our lock window is not among the icons we can choose, we press the plus button to add it. ![Graphical user interface, text, application, chat or text message Description automatically generated](media/image24.png) Finally, with the **Settings** \> **Personalization window**, we can modify the appearance from the **Start** menu. The list of parameters we can modify explains itself quite well; go through it and indicate what we want to activate and what we don\'t. If we are still determining the effect of these options, we can activate them and check the Preview area in the superior part. The link at the bottom, as indicated by the text, **shows which folders you want to appear** **in Start, so** choose the folders in the **Start** menu. By default, the active menu items are **Settings** and **File Explorer**, but you can add several more there, such as **Documents**, **Downloads**, **Pictures**, and so on. Clicking on this option opens the list from which we can select. Graphical user interface, text, application Description automatically generated Let\'s look at the result of activating some additional folders. Now, these will be displayed when you make click the Start button. ![Graphical user interface, application Description automatically generated](media/image27.png) We find the option for screen timeout settings in the lock screen category of the customization window. Although it is not an option to customize the appearance of Windows, it is a significant option regarding its behavior. At this point, we can indicate the time it takes for the screen to turn off when it depends only on the battery, when it is connected but inactive, and when the equipment should go to sleep, especially mobile devices. We must indicate these times depending on the dynamics of our computer use since it will result in a longer duration. Graphical user interface, application Description automatically generated
