WINDOWS 10 -- What\'s New?? - iLink Digital **Unit 6 -- Printer and other devices** - Install a printer - Print Queue - Printer Properties and Preferences - Print a document - Print to another file type - Scanners **Some printers are detected by Windows through the PnP (Plug & Play) system and installed like any other type of hardware**. We will see this system in the topic of **Adding new hardware** later. In this topic, we will learn how to install printers that Windows does not detect (usually somewhat older printers that do not support Plug & Play), printers with wireless connections, and network printers. To add a printer, we must access **Printers and scanners**. To do this, we must go to the **Start** menu and select the well-known **Settings** menu. Once the window is open, select **Devices**. ![](media/image2.png) This option takes us to the next window that shows us the printers and scanners installed on our computer. Here, we must select **Add a printer or scanner**, which we have highlighted with a red box. Graphical user interface, application Description automatically generated When you press the button, detecting printers or scanners connected to the computer or available on the network in which we are connected begins immediately. ![Graphical user interface, application Description automatically generated](media/image4.png) Graphical user interface, text, application, email Description automatically generated **My printer is a bit old. Help me look for it. When you select this option, Windows 10 begins the search by crawling all available ports on the computer. We must resort to the last option in the dialog box if no results are obtained**. **Select a shared printer by name**. In a network configuration, some computers may have shared local printers. In this case, we can indicate the path to the printer for Windows to install. The same option gives valid examples of routes: computer printer or, on an intranet, [http://equipo/printers/impresora/.printer.](http://equipo/printers/impresora/.printer) **Add a recognizable network, wireless, or Bluetooth printer**. These options, again, initiate an automatic tracking of the printers or scanners available in these ways. If it finds them, it will show them in the search window, where we only have to click to select it. If we do not obtain results, then, in a redundant way, we can use the options described in the advanced that we present for the previous option. ![Graphical user interface, application Description automatically generated](media/image6.png) Advanced: Install a networked, wireless, or Bluetooth printer 1. Click on the option. **The printer I want is not in the list**, which opens the following window. In this window, we select to add a printer through a TPC/IP address or, the next option, a recognizable network, wireless, or Bluetooth. Graphical user interface, text, application, email Description automatically generated Select **Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or hostname**. ![Graphical user interface, text, application, email Description automatically generated](media/image7.png) From the drop-down list, we select **TCP/IP device**. Enter the corresponding IP address, a key piece of information that the network administrator, a vital part of this process, must provide. Once you have this, click the Next button to proceed. ![Graphical user interface, text, application, email Description automatically generated](media/image9.png) Once we\'ve successfully located the printer at the specified address, we can change its name to something that will help us quickly identify it in our list. This step is in your hands. We will not share it, but if we do, we could add descriptive information about it. Graphical user interface, text, application Description automatically generated ![Graphical user interface, text, application, email Description automatically generated](media/image16.png) When we have installed the printer, it will be added to the list that we can see in the same category, **Printers, and scanners** we already presented. In that same window, under the list of printers, we find the following option that, when activated, converts the last printer used as the default printer for the following uses. Graphical user interface, application Description automatically generated If the option is disabled, then we can click on any of the printers in the list to, with the options that appear, make it the default printer constantly. Remember that when you send to print on a printer other than the default, you must select it first, as we will see later. ![Graphical user interface, text, application Description automatically generated](media/image18.png) Graphical user interface, text, application Description automatically generated ![Graphical user interface, application Description automatically generated](media/image20.png) If we select a printer in this window, we can see that in the toolbar The button appears. Through it, we can change properties such as permissions, forms, ports, etc., and have a global view of the connected printers. We will also have access to configuration options we will see in due course. A **print server** allows us to connect to network printers that do not depend on a specific computer. This is useful so that you don\'t have to turn on the computer that has the printer physically installed, and it works more independently. Each printer has its print queue. In the top toolbar. If the only thing we want to know is how many documents are on hold, we do not need to access the queue next to the name and printer status is displayed. If we have sent any documents to the printer in the current session, we will find a The icon in the icon area allows us to access the printer directly. ![Table Description automatically generated](media/image23.png) In the queue, we find a list of documents in which we see the **Name of the document** and The **Status** can vary between Printing, Paused, blank when in normal queue, or error messages. Other information, such as the owner or the number of pages to be printed, is also needed. - Documents sent in the current session are pending printing. - Documents that were not printed in the last session because they were paused or the computer was turned off. - Documents sent when the printer was turned off or not functional (no paper or ink). - **Pausing printing** causes the printer to stop printing. To resume printing, click this option again to uncheck it. - **Cancel All Documents** to cancel printing all documents in the queue. - **Pausing** will temporarily interrupt the document\'s printing. To resume it, we must select **Resume** (this option is only available for paused documents). - **Restarting** will start printing the document again. This can be useful in case, for example, we have placed the sheets upside down, and they have been printed incorrectly. It will not be necessary to cancel it and request its printing again. - **Cancel** will delete the document from the queue and stop trying to print. We can also do this by pressing DEL after selecting it. - **Properties** allow us to perform some advanced actions on the document. We can set its Priority or schedule from the General tab for when we want it to print. Consult information about printing from the rest of the tabs. We can also access these options by double-clicking on the document in the print queue. Graphical user interface, text, application, email Description automatically generated **Printer Properties and Preferences** ![Graphical user interface, application Description automatically generated](media/image25.png) - Change the printer name. - Type where it is located in **Location**. This can be useful in offices; we would indicate, for example, the office in which it is located. - Write a short description or **comment.** - See the printer model and its main features. - **Print a test pa. To see if it works correctly. When the test page is finished printing, a dialog box will appear asking if it has been printed correctly. If we answer No,** help will appear to try to solve the problem. - Access Print **Preferences. Print preferences allow us to set up a printer and choose the default printing method**. Graphical user interface, application Description automatically generated - Orientation. The orientation of the paper can be **horizontal** (landscape) or **vertical**. - The **Order of the Pages**. In **ascending order, you will print sheet one first, then sheets 2 and 3, assuming the document is three pages long. In descending order, you will print first sheet 3, then 2, and finally 1. This is useful if our printer leaves the printed part facing up because it** will be orderly. - Pages **per sheet**. You will print the number of pages of the document on the sheet. Up to 4 pages can be printed on a Din A4 sheet of paper in 10-point font. A higher value will be read with incredible difficulty. - And **Advanced Options\...** which open a window from which to configure the type of paper, the quality of the graphics, etc. - The **Origin of the paper**, choosing between **automatic selection** or manual feeding. - And the **Color**. You can choose between **Black and White** or **Color**. ![Graphical user interface, text, application Description automatically generated](media/image27.png) **Print a document** Graphical user interface, application Description automatically generated - Under **Select Printer**, the printers that the computer has access to are listed. It will print for the selected one. Use the horizontal scroll bar below if you can\'t find the printer. - If we select the Print **to one file checkbox**, we can print the document to another file instead of through the printer. It will save the document, but we cannot view it unless we install a program that allows us to do so. When **you run it, it will print** through the default printer. - By pressing the **Preferences** button, we can modify the **Printing Preferences**. - **Find a printer\...** It allows us to search for a new printer on the net. - In **Page Range,** we can decide whether to print **the entire document**, the selected text, or only the **Current Page**, or specify the **Pages** we want to print (either in range or by separating them by commas). - We can specify the **number of copies** we want to print. - From a text editing program, click the **Print** button on the toolbar. - From File **Explorer,** we click **Print** in the context menu of a file. ![Graphical user interface, text, application Description automatically generated](media/image29.png) Graphical user interface, application Description automatically generated The application also allows the computer to be used as a fax machine. There are two procedures to send and receive faxes through this application: the first, no longer so standard, is to connect a computer telephone modem with fax capability. This allows an attachment to be sent via telephone, or the contents of the fax can be written as if they were an e-mail sent to a receiving fax machine. Conversely, it allows you to give what is colloquially known as a \"fax tone\" and receive one that will be saved as an image file. The second option is to hire an Internet fax-sending service. Both options are increasingly in disuse, if not wholly extinct. We must press the New Scan button in the application\'s toolbar to use the scanner option that matters to us. Doing so opens the window that allows us to scan an image. ![Graphical user interface, application Description automatically generated](media/image32.png) It is a straightforward application with which we can establish the characteristics of what we are going to scan: **Source**: Flat (the other possibility is 3D scanning, but a suitable device is required for the option to appear) **Paper size**. This option is activated on some scanner models when they have an automatic sheet feeder to scan, although in most cases, the scanners are only for letter-size sheets. **File type**: any of the different image formats it recognizes: BMP, JPG, PNG, and TIF **Image resolution**. Available resolutions vary depending on the scanner\'s make and model. ##### Brightness ##### Cancel.
