What is Mood & Tone? https://mrsnetherysclass.weebly.com/mood-and- tone.html Mood vs. Tone + Imagery Mood & Tone create interest in the plot and bring to mind certain emotions. Without these elements, stories would feel flat and underdeveloped. Imagery is a different element that acts more like support – it does not have the same impact on its own, but excels when tied to other elements. 2 What is Mood & Atmosphere? Mood & Atmosphere are elements that focus on the feeling readers get from a story. They rely on descriptions to evoke certain emotions or vibes from the reader. Both mean the same thing, but ‘atmosphere’ is generally used for setting while mood can be used for everything else. BOTH will still make appearances in the plot and its events. 3 What is Tone? Tone is the Author’s attitude towards the audience, the subject, or the characters. The Tone is usually defined by an author’s opinion and involve the ways they use words to communicate. Tone is shown through character interactions, actual dialogue, and word choice. 4 Tone is NOT Mood REMEMBER: Tone and mood are NOT the same. Tone is about an author’s feelings; mood is about an audience’s feelings. It is possible for one story to have a serious tone and a ridiculous mood. For example: “He approached the task with sheer determination. The hours he spent practicing were grueling and exhausting, but he was ready. This was the year he would win the pie eating contest at school.” 5 Bonus: Imagery Imagery also relies on description, but it is more concerned with the physical objects in a story. Unlike mood or tone, imagery acts as a support by emphasizing an already established vibe. You can identify this element through an images repeated use in key moments of a story OR through an image with extensive detail. In these cases, the image is probably a reflection of the stories mood or theme. 6
