# Day 1 - December 9, 2024, Monday ## Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Core Subject Description The course introduces the learners to basic understanding of media and information as channels of communication and tools for the development of individuals and societies. It also aims to develop students to be creative and critical thinkers as well as responsible users and competent producers of media and information. ## 2 Basic Types of Communication ### Verbal - Oral - Written ### Non-Verbal - Signs - Symbols - Colors - Gestures - Facial Expressions - Body Language ## What is Communication? It is a process of sharing ideas and opinions about issues, people, events, and places between or among persons through various channels with the intent to gain common understanding (Alagaran, 2017). There are at least five elements that characterize the communication process (Alagaran, 2017): - The interactors (the sender and the recipient of the message) - The message or information - The medium - The feedback or reaction - The communication environment ## 10 Levels of Intimacy in Today's Communication - 10 - Talking - 9 - Video Chat - 8 - Phone - 7 - Letter - 6 - Text msg - 5 - Email - 4 - Facebook msg - 3 - Facebook status - 2 - Twitter - 1 - Written ## Directions: Answer these questions in a ½ sheet of paper crosswise. It refers to a singular form of medium that transmit information in print, electronic or digital such as newspaper, magazines, radio, TV and the Internet (University of Minnesota Libraries Publishing, 2016). ## What is Information? It refers to facts, knowledge or ideas conveyed, gained or received from experience, research or study or communication (Dictionary.com, LLC). Alagaran (2017) defines information as the message conveyed by a sender to its recipient through various channels. It is not always textual in form. As a message, it may also be in video, sound, image, graphics, animation, and other nonverbal forms. ## How Do Media and Information Influence Communication? 1. **They make communication convenient** - Media and information have significantly made communication easier and more accessible. In the past, our means of interacting and communicating were limited to people we meet in person, however, with the existence of social media and various messaging platforms, communication has become faster and easier. 2. **They make the world a smaller place** - Today, at any given point in time, we can be connected to our friends or family anytime and anywhere in the world. Communication between two parties from the opposite sides of the world is now possible. Social media platforms have brought people from different locations, backgrounds, culture, and race together. 3. **There is communication bingeing** - We never stop communicating because there is too much information available and medium to use. We spend hours and hours going through our Twitter and Facebook newsfeed, hence, the increase in our social media consumption. 4. **They challenge our communication etiquette** - Social media and internet interactions offer a veil between the person sending and the person receiving the message. These interactions are no longer face to face, and this can lead to some unfiltered conversations as people feel they can say anything with no repercussions. We do not filter the words that come out of our mouths. We join a conversation without being invited to do so. We launch things that are sensitive. We post and share memes that contain sexual innuendo and inappropriate contents. 5. **They influence the quality and quantity of face-to-face communication** - Media and information have had drastic impact on the way individuals communicate. There have been studies that show how a person's level of engagement during face-to-face communication is affected. 6. **They improve business communication** - The use of media and information in the digital age has solidify the relationship between business and its customers. Various media platforms help take one's business to a higher level of growth, productivity, and success. The accessibility of product and service information and great customer service through social media help keep track of customer interaction, sales leads and productivity. 7. **They shape public opinion** - Whatever you see and hear on the media influence your viewpoint. Maxwell McCombs explained that mass media shapes public opinion through its wide reach, not to mention the perceived credibility of the media, they can sway the opinion of their audience according to the message they convey. This is perfectly illustrated in surveys conducted before elections. When a TV network broadcasts the results of a recent survey, they do more than just inform the public where their candidates currently stand. They also affect the decision-making process of their listeners or viewers in the upcoming elections. For example, a person who is already thinking about voting for “Candidate A” might suddenly switch to “Candidate B" if they hear that the latter is leading in the polls. This classic case of jumping on the bandwagon proves the extent of mass media's influence on public opinion (Gonzales, 2016 as cited in Magallanes, 2020) 8. **They change our writing and speaking techniques** - Communicating using the abbreviated style has become popular during the 2000s, with text messaging. With the pervasive nature of social media and other messaging apps, abbreviated forms of communication have been incorporated and used in our daily interaction. 9. **They open communication on sociopolitical issues, environmental concern, and philanthropic deeds reinforcing civic engagement** - Media and information have amplified discussions on important issues which are capable of resolving social problems or contribute to promoting cultural projects and philanthropic deeds. ## Media & Information Language **Pertains to the technical and symbolic ingredients or codes and conventions that media and information professionals may select and use in an effort to communicate ideas, information and knowledge.** ### Technical Code - Sounds (Ominous music) - Camera Shots - Angle shots - Lighting shots ### Symbolic Code - Dress - Language - Act of Characters - Iconic Symbols (rose symbolizes romance) ## Directions: Answer these questions in a ½ sheet of paper crosswise.
