Lesson 6: DESCRIPTIVE RESEARCH METHOD At the end of the lesson, you are expected to: Define descriptive research method; Compare and contrast the techniques used in descriptive research; and Demonstrate understanding of the descriptive research method and its strategies by preparing a survey story. Activity: Survey Stories Watch the videos and observe what makes them a survey story. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hyd4ITiAH1o What are your insights about the video? Manuel and Medel (1976) said that descriptive research describes what is. It involves the description, recording, analysis, and interpretation of the present nature, composition or processes of a phenomena. Manuel and Medel (1976) added that its focus is on prevailing conditions, or how a person, group, or object behaves or functions in the present. It often involves some type of comparison or contrast. Aquino (1974) pointed out that facts obtained may be accurate expressions of central tendency, or deviation, or of correlation; but the report is not research unless discussion of those data is not carried up to the level of adequate interpretation. Descriptive research describes and interprets what is. It is concerned with conditions of relationships that exists; practices that prevail; beliefs, processes that are going on; effects that are being felt, or trends that are developing. For example: You may want to study on the role of media in terms of crisis especially this time that we have the Covid-19 pandemic. You may also focus on the non-renewal of franchise of ABS-CBN and its impact to the press freedom. It also involves the interpretation of such data with or without the aid of statistical methods. Characteristics of Descriptive Research Descriptive research determines prevailing conditions of acts in a group or case under study. Consumer taste and preferences Pattern of online shopping Overall shopping pattern It gives either a qualitative or quantitative, or both, description of the general characteristics of the group or case under study. Quantitative- especially when you use survey technique, you need to get the frequency of the item or data you want to collect. Qualitative- It refers to the description of the item or you want to collect. Or you can have both… What caused the prevailing conditions is not emphasized. Study of conditions at different periods of time may be made and the change or progress that took place between the periods may be noted or evaluated for any value it gives. Comparisons of the characteristics of two groups or cases may be made to determine their similarities and differences. The variables or conditions studied in descriptive research are not usually controlled. Studies on prevailing conditions may or can be repeated for purposes of verification and comparison. Techniques under the Descriptive Research Method 1. Survey Survey, otherwise known as normative survey, is a fact-finding study with adequate and accurate interpretation. 1. Survey It is used to collect demographic data about people’s behavior, practices, intentions, beliefs, attitudes, opinions, judgments, interests, perceptions, and the like and then such data are analyzed, organized, and interpreted. 2. Case Study Young (1966) defines case study as a “comprehensive study of a social unit— be that unit a person, a social institution, a group, a district, or community—over a period of time.” 2. Case Study Good and Scates (1972) added that the complex situation and a combination of factors involved in the given behavior are examined to determine existing status, to identify causal factors to some deficiency, and to find and recommend a solution or developmental procedures. 3. Content Analysis Content analysis as a research technique deals with documentary materials that are already existing and available. 4. Correlational Studies Correlational studies are designed to determine the extent to which different variables are related to each other in the population of interest. Correlation is used for studies where hypotheses are generated or tested. Task: Televised Survey Watch another televised survey and describe the prevailing conditions.
