List the five themes in Geography. 2. Which theme focuses on the relationship between humans and their environment? 3. Which theme is related to places with similar characteristics? 4. There are two ways of describing location: ABSOLUTE LOCATION RELATIVE LOCATION Grid co-ordinate on earth Relative Location- (longitude and latitude). Where one place is relative to another place. Absolute Location ACTIVITY: (Work in pairs) Using a map of the Caribbean in your school atlas: A. Explain what the horizontal and vertical line on the map represent. b. Why are these lines important? C. Give the exact location of: Georgetown in Guyana Kingston In Jamaica Relative Location Example: Bog Walk is located north of Spanish Town, along the banks of the Rio Cobre, and on the main road to the town of Linstead. – Check your atlas to see of this is correct. YOUR TURN: Describe the relative location of your school from a place often visited by your family. Themes in Geography Place- The physical and human characteristics of an area. Places are classified in two ways: Physical characteristics Human characteristics Characteristics of a place Physical characteristics: includes landforms, water bodies, soil, plants, animals and climate. Characteristics of a place Human characteristics: Human ideas and actions including bridges, houses, parks, land use, population density, language, religion. Characteristics of a place Categorize the following characteristics of a place as either Physical or Human: Human characteristics Physical characteristics mountains architecture houses museums valleys religion river language alluvial soil Themes in Geography Human-Environment relationship- This theme describes the impact human action has on the environment and how the environment impacts humans. This theme deals with how: Humans depend on the environment Food, shelter and clothing. Clues Challenge: Guess the Geography Theme! Clue #1: "Midescribe how di place look an how di people live deh. Themes in Geography Movement- Where do you think the clothes you’re wearing or the food you ate today came from? How did they get to you?” This theme deals with: The relationship between people in different places. Movement of people, ideas, goods and services. Movement of physical systems such as wind. Themes in Geography Region-Broad groupings of areas based on similarities. Regions are classified by: Physical characteristics Human characteristics Characteristics of a region Physical characteristics include landforms, climate, soil, plant and animal life. Characteristics of a region Human characteristics: Economic (level of development) Political ( independent or not) Cultural and social (festivals) Geography Challenge Which theme in Geography is shown below? ACTIVITY Students will be placed in groups, where each group will pick ONE of the five themes in Geography, which will only be known by that group. The teams will be given 5 minutes to formulate a creative skit where they will act out the theme and the class will guess that theme. Each skit piece should be no longer than 2 minute.
