It is considered the smallest disease-causing pathogen and is non-living. It reproduces by infecting certain cells in the body that in turn are directed to produce more copies of the virus. | | **BACTERIA** | Single-celled microorganisms that live nearly everywhere | | **PROTOZOA** | More complex than bacteria | | **FUNGI** | Single-celled or multi-celled organisms that feed on organic materials like plants, animals and food. They cause lung and skin diseases. | | **RICKETTSIA** | Smaller than bacteria but multiply like viruses. | #### **STAGES OF INFECTION** | Stage | Description | |---|---| | **INCUBATION STAGE** | The time between exposure to a pathogen and the appearance of symptoms. It varies depending on the type of pathogen. | | **PRODROMAL STAGE** | The time when the signs and symptoms of disease start to appear. During this stage, the body reacts to the presence of the pathogen. | | **ACUTE STAGE** | The period when symptoms start to subside and the severity of the disease declines. The infection is still present but is now reduced. | | **CONVALESCENT STAGE** | The stage in which the symptoms begin to fade and the patient recovers his or her health and strength. | | **DECLINING STAGE** | The period when symptoms start to subside and the severity of the disease declines. The infection is still present but is now reduced. | #### **Objectives:** 1. Define Infection and Pathogen 2. Discuss the different types of pathogens. 3. Identify and describe the stages of infection. #### **Assessment:** Identify the stage of infection descibed in each statement. Choose your answer from column B and write the letter of your answer in the space provided. | A | B | |---|---| | 1. This is the stage when the signs and symptoms of a disease appear, and it is during this stage the body reacts to the presence of a pathogen. | a. Declining Stage | | 2. The stage in which the symptoms start to subside; the infection is still present, but the patient's health starts to return to normal. | b.Convalescent Stage | | 3. This stage is considered the silent stage because the signs and symptoms are not yet apparent, but pathogens had gained entry into the body and had started replicating. | c. Acute Stage | | 4. The stage in which the symptoms start to subside; the infection is still present, but the patient's health starts to return to normal. | d. Incubation Stage | | 5. The stage in which the infection is at its peak. | e. Prodromal Stage | #### **Institutional Core Values:** Humility/Competent/Fortitude ''I pledge my honor that I have not committed acts of cheating and plagiarism in this online assignment and examination'' #### **Reference:** Lacia, Ferdilyn C.
