What do you want to do? Thinking about your career This is the perfect time to start thinking about what you want to do. Think about what interests and excites you: What modules do you enjoy? What activities give you energy? What activities drain your energy? What client group (if any) would you like to work with? Do you enjoy working in a team? Do you enjoy taking leadership responsibilities? Are you creative? How do you work out what you want to do? Trait and Factor Theory (Parsons, 1909) An ideal career is based on matching personal traits with job factors. The better the fit, the higher an individual’s job satisfaction and success. 1. Understanding of their traits, or own characteristics (e.g., attitudes, abilities, interests, strengths, limitations) 2. Knowledge about the factors, or conditions and requirements of the job (e.g., tasks, pay, advancement, opportunities) 3. Determine a reasonable match between the traits and factors. Lets put that into some simple steps… Exploring and Researching Making the best understanding careers and/or match for you yourself entrepreneurship opportunities Where do you start? - Reflection Try the Prospects Career Planner or Job Mat ch tools Personality questionnaires and psych ometric testing can give you an idea of what career you may be suited to. Student stories - read, watch or listen to the experiences of current and past students Where do you start? - Talk to people Careers appointments – come and speak to me or one of the other consultants / advisors to discuss your plans. Networking – speaking to people in your field of interest can help you decide if that job sounds like something you would like Work experience is essential in finding a career, both to help you develop your skills and understand if the field is a good match for you What can you start doing now?
