Understanding Culture, Society and Politics Prepared by: Ms. Genelyn O. Dasig Learning Objectives: Define culture 1 Describe themselves according to their cultural, social, and political backgrounds. 2 Recognize the concepts of culture, society, and politics and their respective elements. 3 Analyze how their backgrounds influence their identity (values, beliefs, behavior) 4 Introduction of Culture, Society and Politics 1 SPRINGBOARD: Think-Pair and Share Try introducing yourself to your seatmate by telling him or her at least five (5) of your identities. Think of the first five things that come to mind when describing yourself. You can start by thinking of your identity within your family (as a daughter, son, grandson, etc.) and within organizations or clubs that you belong to (as secretary of the student council, member of the drama club, etc.) Introduction of Culture, Society and Politics Philippines Philippine Society, Culture and Politics “comes in many shapes and sizes.” There is always something that differs from the other. It is like the different scenes you observe in your community on your way to school. Philippines You are just one of the more than a hundred million Filipinos living in the Philippines today. The physical appearance, ways of dressing up, and manners of speaking of Filipinos as well as their beliefs, social practices, and traditions are very diverse. Family and Community As the smallest unit of society, your family is your first exposure to the social and cultural world. One of the most unique things about Filipinos is the strength of our family ties. Composition of Society Members The Philippines is made up of more or less 20 million families or households who interact with one another directly through different activities and venues, such as in visits to the local palengke. Beliefs and Traditions Filipinos were introduced to these countries' beliefs and traditions, some of which were forcefully integrated into Philippine culture and eventually became part of the new tradition or mixed Philippine culture. Characterizing Pinoys At home, Filipinos are taught to be warm to others, especially to visitors. It is at home that you learn the trait of hospitality, one of the most likable Filipino traits. You tend to give your utmost effort to make your visitors feel comfortable and entertained during their stays, even to the extreme. Characterizing Pinoys As an extension of your family, your neighbors exert efforts to help you in times of need. Characterizing Pinoys Characterizing Pinoys Some people, especially those living in the rural areas, tend to be superstitious. They believe in many things seen and unseen. Some of them believe in supernatural beings, such as the infamous aswang, the mischievous duwende, the mysterious tikbalang, and the divine diwata. Some of these changes were slow to come, happening across generations; however, there were also times when they transpired so fast that they seemed to just happen overnight. Changing Philippine Society, Culture, and Politics Philippine society, culture, and politics have undergone significant changes since the earliest Filipino settlements in the archipelago until the present time. Along the way, people have embraced foreign cultural elements and ideas that are now considered to be part of their national identity. Indigenous Communities Archaeology and history reveal that many parts of the Philippine archipelago were inhabited by groups of people as early as thousands of years ago. These groups grew to become communities and eventually developed into polities, or politically organized units, such as the barangay. They learned how to adapt to and interact with their environment. Indigenous Communities Indigenous Communities Indigenous Communities Colonial Society Colonial Society Colonial Society Globalization Today, a new form of modernization known as globalization has significantly accelerated the changes that are happening in society. Modernity is no longer just a state of mind but rather a way of life that encompasses every dimension of a human being and society as a whole Communication, in the forms of calls, short message services (SMS), and emails as well as means of transportation, such as airplanes, trains, and transport network vehicle services (TNVS), are even faster than ever. Globalization Interactions between and among more people from both near and faraway places are facilitated. Businesses are going global. Now more than ever, multinational corporations like those in technology, automobile, electronics, business process outsourcing, and many others have reached more territories, thus gaining huge profits. A somewhat “global" culture is created that is heavily reliant on the internet. Clothing and fashion transcend regional and territorial boundaries. 35 Do you think that the changes brought about by modernization are beneficial to the Philippines? Why or why not?
