Introduction to grade 7 science Week 1 Getting to know the teachers Interesting facts 1. Name? 2. Where are you from? 3. What did you study? 4. When last did you see your family? 5. Any travel stories? 6. Favourite Vietnamese food or drink? Classroom Rules & Contracts Classroom contracts Books and material Monthly study plans Always check your monthly study plan, and make sure that you are prepared for every class. Textbooks Make sure you bring the right textbook for each class. Notebook Make sure you have your notebook in class, and that you use it to take notes. Student LMS: Make sure to check your LMS to review the lessons. Agenda 1. Getting to know the teacher(s). 2. Classroom rules and expectations. 3. Branches of science. Physics Chemistry Biology 4. Lab safety. 5. Science in Action Branches of Science What is Science? Science is the process of observing, asking questions and finding things out about the world around you. The process is called the scientific method. We’re going to study the scientific method next week! What is Science? There are 3 branches of Science. Can you remember what you studied in each branch from grade 6? Let’s match them: 1 Biology The study of matter, it’s 2 reactions and properties 2 Chemistry 3 The study of forces and motion. 3 Physics 1 The study of living things. What is Science? Which branch of Science? Gravity Photosynthesis Albert Einstein Cells Physics Biology Physics Biology Periodic table Chemical reactions Magnetism Bacteria Chemistry Chemistry Physics Biology Solar system Charles Darwin Electricity Growth Physics Biology Physics Biology What will we study in Science? Physics Chemistry Biology Light Atoms & Elements Plants Sound Acids & Alkalis Ecology Electricity Chemical Reactions Reproduction Forces Lab Safety Lab Safety The science laboratory is a room or building with scientific equipment for doing scientific tests, teaching science, or producing (making) chemicals or medicines. Safety is extremely important when working in a Does your school have a science lab? science lab, as it helps to prevent accidents. Lab Safety In the science lab we wear PPE. Can anyone guess what PPE means? What PPE PPE can youprotective is personal see in the picture? equipment Safety goggles Mask Ear plugs / hearing protection Safety gloves Closed-toe shoes Hair net / helmet Lab coat Lab Safety In our groups, let’s brainstorm some of things you can do and can’t do in the lab. On a sheet of paper, make a list of the following: ○ Things you can do in the lab ○ Things you can’t do in the lab You will have 5 minutes to write as much as you can! Lab Safety Let’s share some things to do and not do in the science lab: Do: Don’t: Wear PPE Don't eat or drink Tie hair back Don't run and play Keep your work area clean Never smell and/or taste a Be careful when working chemical with a flame Don't mix chemicals without Be careful with chemicals teacher's permission Clean up Don't use broken glassware Spot the hazards Lab Safety Can you guess what the symbols mean? CORROSIVE TOXIC HIGHLY Substances that Can cause death FLAMMABLE attack and destroy when swallowed, Substances that living tissues, breathed in or easily catch fire. including the eyes absorbed through and skin. the skin. Lab Safety Can you guess what the symbols mean? Science in Action Science in Action How can we use science to improve our world? Can you identify some of these problems in the world? Plastic Pollution How can we use The Great Pacific science to deal with plastic Garbage Patch pollution in the ocean? Plastic Pollution First we need to identify our problem. What is the problem? Let’s discuss: Does Do you this think problem scientists only should affect this workbeach/ocean, together to Why is plastic in the ocean a problem? share their or every observations beach/ocean? and findings? Plastic Pollution Plastic affects all living things, especially sealife like plankton. 1. Microplastics/plastics block UV rays from the sun, which plankton need for photosynthesis. 2. Plankton is a major food source for ocean creatures. 3. Microplastics are eaten by sea creatures and travel through the food chain. Plastic Pollution How can we reduce plastic pollution in the ocean? Use less plastic Recycle all plastic Clean up beaches and the ocean Educate others about the problem of plastic pollution These are great ideas, but they don’t use science. Let’s look at some examples of how science is being used to reduce plastic pollution in the ocean... Plastic Pollution Here are some cool examples of how science is being used to reduce plastic pollution. Run for the Ocean by Adidas The Ocean Cleanup The Ocean Cleanup The Ocean Cleanup is an organisation where scientists work together to create ways to clean up the huge patches of garbage in the ocean. Let’s watch a video about it Run for the Ocean by Adidas The sports brand Adidas is trying to reduce plastic pollution by using recycled materials instead of making new plastic. Let’s watch a video about it Worksheet Practice Science in Action Now it’s our turn to think of how we can use science to make the world better. In groups, think of a problem that you could solve using science? 1) Why is this problem bad for the world? 2) How could science/technology fix it? 3) Will it be easy or difficult? 4) How long will it take? 5) Is it expensive or cheap? 6) What branches of science will you use? Review Quiz Introduction to Science What rule does this picture represent? Try to keep your camera on Introduction to Science What Biology, are the Physics, 3 branches and Chemistry of science? Introduction to Science What are some of the new topics we will study this year? A. Space, plants and chemical reactions B. Light, acids & alkalis and plants C. Rocks, chemical reactions and natural disasters Introduction to Science Any from: Safety goggles, Mask, Ear plugs / hearing protection, Safetyofgloves, List 3 examples PPE weClosed-toed need to beshoes, safe inHair the net lab / helmet, or Lab coat Introduction to Science HIGHLY FLAMMABLE: Substances What does this thatmean? lab symbol easily catch fire. Vocabulary Vocabulary 1 Biology The study of matter, it’s 2 reactions and properties 2 Chemistry 3 The study of forces and motion. 3 Physics 1 The study of living things. What did we do today? 1. Getting to know the teacher(s). 2. Classroom rules and expectations. 3. Branches of science 1. Physics 2. Chemistry 3. Biology 4. Lab safety 5.
