Weather and Climate WEATHER Weather refers to the current conditions of the atmosphere. These conditions are shaped by the interaction of sunlight with the gases in Earth's atmosphere. Climate Climate is the average weather in a given area over a long period of time. WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF WEATHER? SUNNY On sunny days, the sun shines brightly in the sky, creating a warm and bright atmosphere outdoors. The sight of a large yellow ball in the sky is a common feature of sunny weather. Enjoy the opportunity to wear your favorite outfits and engage in outdoor activities when the weather is sunny. RAINY Rainy weather happens when water falls from the sky in the form of raindrops. When it's rainy outside, the clouds in the sky are dark and heavy. Rainy weather makes everything wet, so you might need to wear a raincoat and boots to stay dry. CLOUDY Cloudy weather is when the sky is filled with clouds, like a big blanket covering the sun. The clouds can look fluffy or gray, and they block the sunlight, making everything outside a bit darker. WINDY Windy weather is when the air outside is moving fast and making everything sway and flutter. Windy weather is fun for flying kites or watching leaves dance around. SNOWY Snowy weather is when tiny ice crystals fall from the sky and cover everything with a soft white blanket. Snowy weather is perfect for building snowmen, having snowball games, and making snow angels. Elements of Weather and Climate Temperature it refers to the hotness and coldness of an object. 3 main scales use in measuring temperature: 1. Celsius 2. Kelvin 3. Fahrenheit Humidity the amount of water vapor in the atmosphere or in a gas. Types of Humidity 1. Absolute - a strict measurement of water vapor within a given amount of air. 2.Relative - the percentage of moisture present in the atmosphere as compared to its capacity 3. Specific Humidity - the weight or mass of water vapor in a unit mass of moist air Rainfall / Precipitation tany kind of weather condition where something’s falling from the sky. Types of Rainfall 1. Convectional ( 4 o’clock rainfall 2. Orographic ( relief precipitation) 3. Cyclonic ( Frontal precipitation) Types of Climate based on Rainfall Distribution Tropical Dry Moderate Continental Polar Factors affecting Climate based on Rainfall distribution 1. Distance from the sea - areas farther from the sea tend to drier and have less rain 2. Ocean currents - it create the conditions that ,ay cause tropical cyclones and hurricanes Factors affecting Climate based on Rainfall distribution 3. Directions of the Prevailing wind - the movement of air. NE( North East monsoon- November to February SW Southwest monsoon from July to September Factors affecting Climate based on Rainfall distribution 4. Shape of the Land- mountains receive more rainfall than low lying areas 5. Distance from the equator - places located in the Equator have hotter climate compared to places locate away. Factors affecting Climate based on Rainfall distribution 6. El Niño- extending the drought conditions and lowering tropical cyclones and increasing the potential for coral bleaching.
