How does thinking critically about our history help with current and future practice? In preparation for today’s class, you reviewed the historical timeline of CYC. Sick Kids timeline reading In pairs, discuss some of the key elements of our history. What stood out to you? What surprised you? How does this help shape your understanding of CYC? History is not always pretty Historians, sociologists, and cultural psychologists all believe that childhood is a social construct This means that “we have collectively defined (or constructed) the meaning of childhood” (Stuart, 2013, p.22). Stuart (2013) quotes Heywood (2001) who states, “Societal differences in socioeconomic class, race, gender, religion, and so on, influence how a particular subgroup treats children” (p. 22).
