RIVERSIDE FIRE AUTHORITY FIELD OPERATING GUIDELINES WATER TENDER OPERATIONS OVERVIEW Water shuttle operations used to supply water to emergency scenes far from a water supply source where relay pumping is not practical. OPERATIONAL MODES: Nurse Operation Tender tied into one or more companies so as to provide water supply for direct attack and or to support filling of tanks. Tender is stationary and committed to the scene. Recommended for low GPM delivery of short duration. Rule of Thumb: < 250 GPM and < 10 minutes of operation Subsequent tenders that supply a nurse operation must avoid connecting to the nurse tender’s direct fill and connect to a pump intake to allow them to pump through the nurse tender in the event the nurse tender experiences a pump failure. Progressive Tender Supply Utilize driveway supply lay with a siamese appliance. Tenders tie into supply line with a siamese and pump the supply line, so that more sources of water can be tied into line, as one empties the others can maintain flow. (see diagram) Recommended for larger GPM delivery. Rule of Thumb: > 250 GPM and > 10 minutes of operation SUPPORTING WATER TENDERS: Water Supply Officer with Separate TAC Channel Traffic Control / Traffic Plan for Shuttle Identify water sources while enroute Provide source engine at identified water supply, if possible. In cold weather situations, consider requesting a sanding truck and/or tow truck to stage in the area for possible issues with tenders. WATER TENDER FLOW RATE: Tanker Flow Rate = Tanker Water Tank Size (in Gallons) - 10% / Travel Time + Handling Time
